Hi All,

I’ll keep it simple and to the point

Can I include code (php/javascript/html/css) from a GPL licensed plugin in a theme to sell on themeforest

Plugin URL >> http://www.wpexplorer.com/symple-shortcodes/ Plugin License >> GNU General Public License version 3.0

I believe I can use a GPL Licensed item/code in any way I want but posting here to make sure

Thanks in advance for help

Yeah, but it’s not recommended. It’s a plugin for a reason, I’d just link to a bunch of shortcode plugins in your documentation and let the end user pick which one they want to use.

Well no, you cant use it “any way you want”

You can use it as long as you release all the code under GPL , and you keep all copyright notices within that code intact

For example I am building a theme and have a set of shortcodes and I want to add an extra shortcode lets say for youtube. There is a plugin (GPL) which has that shortcode, now if I download that plugin and take that one shortcode from it and edit it to suite my needs and add it in my theme.

Did I commit any copyright violation.

Dont worry about end product of mine I’ll license that GPL

Hey there, I am the creator of the plugin ;)

You can use the plugin definitely for your ThemeForest Items but I wouldn’t suggest stripping it and putting it into the theme, like “itsmattadams” says…”It’s a plugin for a reason”.

- I keep this plugin updated constantly with new shortcodes (adding a few more soon)
- The plugin seems to be have a bug in 3.6 which I will be fixing
- If people want to switch themes they can take the shortcodes with them because its a plugin

What I suggest is you use the TGM Activation script to suggest people to use my plugin:

https://github.com/thomasgriffin/TGM-Plugin-Activation

You can just add a zip of the plugin within your theme.

Then if you want to provide styling that matches your theme for the plugin then simply remove the plugin’s CSS and then re-style in your style.css file or in a separate css file:

wp_dequeue_style('symple_shortcode_styles');

Good luck!

Hi WPExplorer,

Thanks for the input my friend :) You are right and I knew of https://github.com/thomasgriffin/TGM-Plugin-Activation

My concern is in general would it be fine to do what I said above.

For example I am building a theme and have a set of shortcodes and I want to add an extra shortcode lets say for youtube. There is a plugin (GPL) which has that shortcode, now if I download that plugin and take that one shortcode from it and edit it to suite my needs and add it in my theme.

You don’t need a youtube shortcode. JetPack has this covered already ;)
