Hi! I was interesting whether I can use images downloaded from internet just for the presentation of my product. For example I made a brochure and used in the preview file somebody’s pictures (of course they are not included in the work file). Is this allowed or not? Do I have to have permission from the original author?

Each image on the Internet is under different license. Not every images can be used, even in the preview. Checkout what Envato says about this:

Assets in Preview Files

Assets used in preview files need to be properly licensed for such commercial use. Because the asset is not being resold or redistributed, you will not need a re-sale or re-distribution license as you would for use of that asset in the download file. However you will still need a license for a commercial use (reproduction) within the preview file. It’s important to read each license carefully to make sure your intended use of the asset.

Check out PhotoDune. You can also link-swap in your item descriptions then.

Forgot to mention that public domain sites also provide a great source for images. Be sure to check if an image has restrictions on it first though, since many public domain image sites will include copyright images as well. :)

You really have to do your research with regards to the images you want to use.

Even if you take images from Google, some have disclaimers such as “Image may be scaled down and subject to copyright.”.

Most images on commercial sites are most certainly copyrighted and have usage restrictions. Its a very difficult process, so sometimes it best just to play it safe.

I usually buy an image on PhotoDune and in my description box I write a disclaimer “The image used in this artwork is not included in the file, please click the link below to purchase this image.”. I also like to see it as helping out other Envato sellers.

I hope this was useful, all the best :)
