As seen on Notes

We’re soft launching some clarifications in regards to using products and trademarks on the Marketplaces. We believe that these clarifications will help our community meet the IP obligations we have to not only one another, but also to other people’s intellectual property rights.

Please read through the Notes post and feel free to ask any questions you may have here.

We’re keen to hear what you think, and where appropriate we’ll refine our approach. You may think of some details when looking through the clarifications, and may want to share with us from your day-to-day creative activities on our Marketplaces. We’ll make sure we stop in to this thread daily to address any questions.

I don’t get the part about Social Icons, what’s with that 20% of our own work? Can’t we use free social icons pack now?

Not really.

Example:

If you want to release an icon pack on GraphicRiver, there needs to be at least 20% of your own original icons (pencil, globe, envelope,...), the rest can be social (twitter, facebook,...) icons. In other words, you can’t release a pure, social only, icon pack.

Well, I have read it all but still… to be 100% sure: can I use for a item name ”...Google Maps”? (it’s factual, descriptive, so it should be allowed; or not?)

Hi greenline! You’re exactly right: A CodeCanyon item called “Responsive Styled Google Maps – Wordpress Plugin” is a great example of how a trademark can be used in an item title as it’s factual and descriptive. :)

Ha, nice try, fuelthemes. :D Distributed for consumption for sure. Definitely not distributed for reuse and/or redistribution. :)

Bingo! Exactly right, freshface, thanks, buddy!

So to answer the other remaining part of the original question from purethemes, yes, you are still permitted to use “free social (media) icon packs” in site templates / themes etc… Just always check the usage rights regarding use and redistribution.

The 20% rule applies to GraphicRiver when creating and selling your own social media icon sets.

Hope this clarifies. :)

Great questions, everyone, please keep them coming! We’d love to improve our documentation/examples if there’s anything in there that’s not clear or not covered.

Yes in your live preview but not provided to the buyer as you don’t have redistribution rights – only the right to use it in your live demo for show purposes.
