Videohive SEO? A little tip?

Hey everyone! I did a little experiment to see if this would work, and it does, sort of, some times. And I don’t know why

I’m no SEO expert, and I’m hoping that some of you can provide some tips on making this more effective. Because there doesn’t seem to be a user interface to search for VH authors, I thought it would be cool for loyal customers to search your name or username and have your items show up in the results.

I simply added a line of text at the bottom of my item descriptions like this “All item contents copyright © 2012 Andre Navarre operating at Videohive as andrenavarre”. Now, when you search my name “Andre”, “Navarre”, and my username “andrenavarre” you get some of my items as a result.

But I don’t understand why only some of my items show up, as I’ve added this line to all of my items. And I wonder how often Videohive crawls it’s pages, it takes a while to show up. Anyone have any tips?

@ Andre – I guess Envato’s search engine reads a specific number of letters from the item’s description page. So if your desired word is deeper than this range, it does not produce any keywords…

Very interesting what you suggest steve314! I wish I could unlock this mystery, as the text is pasted on all 23 of my items, yet only 4 show up at all in the search results. Maybe I should place the notice 1st thing on the page to see if there’s a difference? So far:

“Andre Navarre” shows 2 results

“Navarre” shows 2 results

“Andre” shows 4 results

“andrenavarre” shows 2 results

Yes Andre, it could much more complicated, with many factors taking place for the creation of keywords in the item’s description page. But sure, it will be great to let us know your conclusions!

I did the same experiment on four of my items several months ago. There does appear to be a limit to how many characters the VH search engine reads.

More importantly, those four items have seen no sales boost compared to the others. The popularity of my items waxes and wanes, but those four are nothing to shout about in terms of sales.

After three years here, I still don’t know how customers find projects and how items get popular. I’m beginning to think that a lot hangs on keywords and thumbnails.

Tanks for the tip felt_tips, you’re probably right. But I prefer to decide myself how my time is best spent

I was hoping this thread’s topic wouldn’t deviate to sales, I was trying to frame it in a way that would initiate a discussion on keywords and the search engine… technology wise. In theory, understanding how the search engine works better could allow us to write more effective item descriptions too.

It would be great to learn what the character limit is for the search engine.
