hmmm, ok, i may be shutting this system down as it looks like more of a populatiry contest than who has the best wallpaper, i think i will start a thread and only users signed up BEFORE june 09 can vote in the thread. going to talk to lance now :)

yeah it really is, its a relatively small amount of money and a community run competition yet people still feel the need to cheat… well cheat is too strong a word, but i think voting should be restricted to envato members only, rather than people just visiting the site, voting then f’ing off again.

You know… this reminds me the last competition I entered, the one at AudioJungle for the Mbox2Pro, where Quange won, thanks to his marketing abilities (he also wrote a post about it). Some complained about this… some were fine.

What to say… we can (as with the competition above) accept this “marketing/friends” thing without complaining or, if we want to award the real best wallpaper a jury is the only way to go in my opinion.

Since no one have forbidden this “marketing behaviour” before the start of the voting it’s not fair calling it “cheating”, it’s just part of the game (I’m not justifying anyone… it’s depressing also for me to see the usual equation “more friends” = “more votes”, but is how 90% of the competitions around internet are ruled).

As for the jury… we can extend the concept also to: restrict votes for registered and active members of this community (that is indeed a “large” jury :) ).

If we want to be more “strict” with this we can also limit the vote to users that have at least a product to sell on the marketplace, or that have bought at least one item… so to avoid spam registrations.

Yes, but this isnt an Envato competition, this is a competition that i set up on the forums, it is MY money and the money of other authors that is being awarded as a prize, and i want to award it to the author with the best wallpaper not the author with the most friends.

I agree with flashjunkie. No offense to Lance or the developers who helped to create the poll functionality but i was hoping for something like bluegestalt recommended. Voting only for people who already uploaded or purchased an item for example.

What i would recommend now: Compose a jury of revieweres and/or long term members from all sites, set a few criterias like idea, execution etc and let them vote =)

Otherwise it could really harm community driven contests :(

...and I agree with you 100% :)

So… let’s set up a jury syestem (I like the idea of Kriesi of the different criterias, but I understand that may become laborious to set up).
...or let’s give the prize to PatrickJansen and don’t think of it anymore! :D

amm… I’d like a word on this, I don’t just go “vote for me here” I give a link to the gallery so the rest of entries can be seen, and then I say “but you’d do me a favor voting for me” and I don’t have a lot of friend, I can tell you exactly to how many people I asked, only close friends who know about design, they were about 8, and I can’t even know if they all voted for me, as I said, I gave the link for the whole gallery.

You say you want to make this a talent contest, no a “who has more friends contests” well… the way I see it is “Who has more friends in envato contest”.

I’m looking at the comments, and I feel bad because I understand them like it’s my fault, or I don’t know why you say those things, and I don’t know why I’m on the first place, maybe people JUST LIKE my wallpaper, I’m somehow new to the community, I don’t have friends in here, I got $50USD in sales and I’m just starting to build my popularity in here (well, I guess this did me the favor)

The comment makes me look like the bad guy when nobody knows whether that person voted for me or not. But obviously because I’m with the most votes at the moment I’m the suspect, I understand that. But I’ve been following the poll since the start, and I can say that mine was first since the first time I checked it, even before I voted (useless to say… I voted for myself)

Now… I’m not gonna start a big discussion in here, because I can almost feel everyone is against me, but what’s with comments like:

””or let’s give the prize to PatrickJansen and don’t think of it anymore”“

I am(was) so unpopular on Envato that no ones believes I have talent and made a nice wallpaper because you only check on what your friends did???

I don’t know what else to say… I like the one made by Parker&Dent, ReaperMedia, Contempolnc, Robert_d, Useyourimagination and WickedPixel This is gonna sound bad but I don’t like the others a single bit, and I like mine, I did a big effort doing it and you all make it seem it was a contest just for friends, you opened a contest for everyone in envato to enter, if a non-popular guy wins of course it’s his fault, because he made a good thing, not because he’s cheating.

This is like a big “Your work is ugly Alter, and no one believes your winning” well… thanks… but… at least give it a good critique or something…

Just what I think :)

””or let’s give the prize to PatrickJansen and don’t think of it anymore””

hey… that was just a joke, based on the fact that it’s for sure one of the most commented and appreciated in the blog and in this thread (and doubtless one of the best).

Even if you have more votes I don’t think that anyone is really accusing you or that thought of you as the “bad guy” :) And for sure yours is another one among the most interesting, so you truly deserve to win.

And I suppose that many in this “community” voted for you… 55 votes are not that much, and are “believable”.
It’s more annoying for sure seeing a difference of 200 votes, because in that case it becomes just a matter of popularity among other communities or social networks…

I think that many have asked their friends to vote, and that’s not cheating in my opinion… even if a jury or something similar would have done better.
Look what happened in the contest I wrote above and read the comments… many accused Quange or MaestroRage of cheating, but it’s the same as here.

In this case, since this contest started from Flashjunkie, he has for sure the right to decide what to do… so let’s see! :)

Thank you so much Reaper!
I have read your previous comment in the blog, so thank you twice :)

I’m not giving up but for sure (I was just trying to play down the situation here) but, apart from the money prize that’s very attractive indeed, I’m already satisfied, having been appreciated and voted by some.

I had fun creating it, and someone watched and even used my work… that’s enough for me… ;)
