WACOM Tablet Users.......

hey everyone… i just have a question…

I’m in the process of deciding which size of a Wacom Tablet to purchase… and i had some questions for anyone who uses one.

I am deciding between

Wacom Graphire4 6×8

or this:

Wacom Intuos3 6×11 Pen Tablet

My question is:

i use a widescreen monitor… does this mean i have to get the 6×11 widescreen style tablet… or would i still be able to use the 6×8… and also how much of a difference between the 2… like will the fact that i have a widescreen monitor and using a 6×8 give me a lot of problems?

It all depends on your resolution, not your screen size.

I used to use a 6×8 very comfortably on 1024×758 and slightly higher. It actually was a 9×12 but the entire 9×12 area was way too big for the screen resolution.

When I moved monitors from a 15” to a 19” (this was about 5 years ago mind you) I still continued to use a 6×8 for a resolution of 1200xsomething.

If you’re on a widescreen, I would highly recommend getting a wide tablet as it’ll feel more natural if you’re using it across the whole screen.

You can do things like map a certain part of the screen to the tablet, but then you need to use a mouse as well.

Problem with the 6×11 is it’s expensive, you may want to go for the 4×5 graphire or 6×8 graphire to see if you’re into the whole tablet thing, and if you are, step up…

I’ve even used an old 10×10 on a 21” and I mapped it down (I can’t remember what to, maybe 7×9)

My screen resolution right now is 1440×900…

i guess the main reason i asked is because i will be using the tablet here at home on my widscreen, 1440×900 res pc… and occasionally also at school on macs and PC’s with 1024×768 and such… so i was just making sure that it would work fine moving back and forth between different computers and resolutions.

but i am defianatly leaning toward what you said about getting a Graphire 6×8 to start off.. because it is a LOT more affordable haha we’ll see.

Yeah people either love or hate Wacoms. When I was doing a lot of Photoshop work (i.e. 40hrs a week in Photoshop) it was very useful. When I transitioned to software development it became more annoying than useful

I think they are great for design work, but more like drawing/painting, I couldnt really get into it for things like web design. It takes some getting used to. I didnt like it at first, but after a little bit of use, it makes things a lot easier. But I def agree with getting the small version first…I bought the 6×8, tried it out, and returned it a week later…I had plans to buy a bigger one but never got around to it.
