I didn’t understand what’s going on here.. I have no idea what Thesis is, but I just had a look on their site and they are selling a premium wordpress theme.. What’s the problem? Sorry if I misunderstood :D

Well, WordPress is licensed using a license called GPL . All WP themes, since they are using WP code, should therefore (according to Matt) be licensed using GPL , which is a kinda open-source license. Chris Pearson, developer of a theme called Thesis (which he’s made millions of dollars from) refuses to license it under GPL . Matt, therefore, says this harms the WP community as well as it being illegal, and Chris says its his theme, and he’ll do what he wants. “Su me”, he says to Matt.

Thats about it.

Its an interessting discussion to say at least, and I am yet unsure which side I would choose.

Here are 2 interessing articles in favor of those who want to use themes with any custom licence:

The Software Freedom Law Center told WP themes would usually be considered GPL licensed.

If the design and css of your theme is protected by copyright either way and therefor is illegal to resell or redistribute without permission even under the GPL , isn’t this whole thing kind of pointless?

Here’s my personal opinion: http://fuckgpl.com/

Disclaimer: I work for Envato, so that’s just my personal opinion, it doesn’t represent Envato’s view in any way.

That’s rude.

I think we should respect what he want. He created Wordpress and he decided it is GPL .

I know I complained a lot about TF but I realised it’s their thing and if I dont like the way they do thing, i just have to go away.

It’s the same concept for WP, if you don’t like the liscence, choose another platforms.

It’s like if I would say, Exclusivity is bullshit, I want to use your services and be paid like an exclusive member, but its my stuff and I want to sell it where I want ..

It doesnt make sense, it’S TF rules and we can’t break it .. same thing for Wordpress.

I should clarify that my opinion was towards the GPL license itself, not Wordpress or Matt. :-)
