@Doru, now it is very clearly confusing. :D
Agreed! /need more beer to understand! :D

OK!

items price should be proportionally with their value.

I’m an author on videohive. A problem we have there is that authors upload items very similar with other items present on the marketplace made by other authors

in reviewers defense is hard to draw a line between inspiration and hard rip off,

but this is not the main problem

THE PROBLEM! is:

when someone “copy/inspire” from other items BUT adds one million other customizations options available and then is priced just 5 or 10$ more.

when buyer compare the items (since they are similar (VERY SIMILAR) ) it will probably purchase the one with 1000 features.

This is not about item quality, because both files can be good, is about what is inside and the price each items have

I totally agree with this. This is the ‘standard’ mentality of consumers. We will always want to get more for cheaper price and knowing that ThemeForest also reviews the themes before they are approved, there is a certain ‘minimum quality’ in the themes and the main differentiating factors will be value (which is the price vs features) and support (which I think some new authors do it ‘better’ buy giving free customizations).

There should be a limit to the number of plugins a theme can have, or it should be priced proportionately to the number of plugins / scripts it’s bundled. For instance, many themes include a few gallery scripts at the homepage just to provide additional ‘choices’ for buyers, but the prices of those themes do not reflect that. Compared to those with only one gallery script and similar functions, they will probably have the same price and buyers will tend to buy one with more plugins (aka. ‘features’).

End of rant, and I don’t expect to see any changes being done to solve this in the foreseeable future.

maximum price limit is BAD

only cure to this behavior is to display the item with his real price. if the item value is 750$, list the item at that price.

This is my personal opinion but I strongly believe there’s no respect from envato to their authors when they accept new items who are visible more valuable in terms of resources included than current items available on this marketplace and then put the price on the same level.

This is insulting, really.

Is like I’m selling this:

and then someone else uploads this:

and the price is the same (yes, the truck trailer is included – go for it!)

I really have enough :(

AND then to compete I need to upload this (ship included):

I’m sure envato will love it. Is this their plan? If yes please tell us.

@doru, Slightly off topic but are you selling that car at $45? Let me know, I want to buy.

why you want to buy ONE car when at the same price you can get the truck trailer with all those awesome cars included?

@Doru, the infinite features and additions should be dealt with specific marketplace or even specific categories in mind. Again one change wont fit for every marketplace. In some cases, the solution could be just raising price and for some cases, even allowing irrelevant additions should be stopped (not sure if this happens already). Obviously this requires posting this kind of threads / discussions towards specific marketplaces – otherwise, we will just live the car examples.

There is a difference between feature and utility. If a product has 1000s of features, its still one product and stays within fair competition. The problem arises only when the utilities (that doesn’t belong to the original product’s category) included within items.

the problem is, x=value, y = price

I’m pretty sure that’s how envato sets their price.

Envato sells license to use not product.

So if you sell license to use 1000 cars me as one driver will not benefit more than have ability to try and choose the one which will fit my needs the best.

If you talking about many variants and customization imo it’s great. If you talking about inspiration and copyrights violations it’s different.

Best regards, Andrey

YES!

and we should stop debating details.

features, entire items included or precise categories it doesn’t matter, what is important is the diagram above.

product value is not equal with product price.

@doru, here we sell licenses.

Take a look over this :

  • Script value = $ 1000
  • Script value on CODECANYON : $ 20

So, we need to sell 50 licenses to get our money.
The idea is this, we can make more money than our scripts value or…less money!

50 people or..100 will pay $ 20 for your script.

How many sales do you have if your script value will be $ 1000 ??
