Stage 1: Enlightenment
Wow, I can’t believe people are paying for these things I created in my spare time!

Stage 2: Motivation
If I make more stuff I can make more money!

Stage 3: Disappointment
So much effort went into that last item but no one’s buying it!

Stage 4: Wisdom
Getting better at figuring out what sells and what doesn’t.

Stage 5: Comfort
Monthly income now becoming something you can rely on.

Stage 6: Autonomy
I’m finally ready to give up my day job and really give this stock thing a shot!

Stage 7: Anxiety
Support demand increases, how can I find the time to make anything new?

Stage 8: Structure
Starting to manage time better, figuring out ways to stay productive.

Stage 9: Serenity Now
What authors learn to say to themselves after dealing with a high-maintenance customer.

Wow. I’m loving these responses. Keep them coming!

It’s great that you’re not just talking about the victories, but the challenges as well. It must be a real emotional roller coaster putting yourself out there artistically every day.

One recurring milestone is being able to become an author full-time. Does that happen consistently across all the Marketplaces, or is it harder to achieve in some?

Some of the answers made me laugh. Like this one from revaxarts:

register
wait one and a half year
submit first crappy item

I laughed out loud. That sequence was quickly followed by his first rejection. Dealing with rejection seems to be another theme, as is dealing with customer expectations.

And getting a hot new girlfriend was mentioned by a few of you. Does the Marketplace really help with that? Don’t bother answering – my wife wouldn’t let me have one anyway. ;)

Well, thanks again. Like I said, keep ‘em coming! Really looking forward to the next batch. :)

Ha I love you DigitalScience! Glad to see you’re back. Guys like you, bobocel and oxylus helped build Envato (Eden) in the early days. Envato wouldn’t be around now without those great authors.
