@contempoinic : And what bothers you to use a mult-isite WP install for all your themes on WPEngine? :) That’s what I use and you can still remain at 99$/mo no matter how many themes you have. Only if you go over the 100k visitors/month mark, then you’ll pay either overage tax, or switch to a higher plan.

1. Are you sure about this? I’ve clearly asked them about this thing and they told me that even if i use multisite, each instance of the multsite is considered an independent WP install.

2. With themes here you will go above 100k / month. Definitely!

3. I am on A Small Orange, paying $40 / month and got better speeds than WPEngine – tested both, so i know what i’m talking about :) My sites load around 10-15% faster on ASO than WPE.

I still recommend it for people who don’t like to manage their installations or don’t want to hear about cPanel or stuff like that. But if you don’t mind a bit of caching / cPanel work, then it’s not justified to pay $100 / month or more for things that you can get in other places at less than half.

Another downside of WPEngine is that you cannot upload static HTML. Come on! I’m a web developer i want to be able to upload static HTML files and have control over a traditional website. File uploads, stuff like that.. Everything needs to be done via WordPress, so it’s not really good solution.

1. I agree that they are truly on the pricier side and you can get faster site loads elsewhere like ASO. I currently have a 2 domain and 13 subdomain multi-site installation on WPEngine, yet I’m still paying the 99$/month, so I guess the point at 1. is possible?

2. I’m yet to experience massive success on the marketplaces, so I’m currently at approx. 30k/month.

I certainly believe that when the time comes for an upgrade, I will definitely consider ASO too :)

@icypixles

Forgive me, i have written bad information. I’ve looked into my discussions with them and you’re right: a multi-site installation counts as a single WordPress instal. My bad.

I see way more than 100k uniques a month, already talked extensively with WPEngine and the costs were going to be astronomical.
