What little thing drives you nuts when you’re writing code, designing, recording audio? I mean something so small it shouldn’t matter, but you spend a lot of time with it.

Readyyyyyyy, go!

The moment I save file or upload, something gets stuck, draaaaggggiinng…. then I have to find a screw driver or spanner to remove the “please wait…” screen but it takes few tiresome adventures to find screw drivers and finally it turns out the huge work I done was actually inside the early morning dream in which I couldn’t save the work! :P

In coding, ANSI C/C++ compiler optimizations can sometimes drive me really friggin’ nuts. While ok for the mass stuff, when doing low level programming some things are “intended” the way it was programmed. The compiler sometimes replaces code with ‘more optimal’ code, thinking it’s smarter, while it does this without further knowing anything about the requirements. To make things worst: different compilers can behave very different in this aspect, which can lead to very unpredictable things. There’s a TON of more things that annoy me in the world of software development, but let’s not go there… Ugh.

Take this example about detecting endianness at run-time by using a hardcoded magic number. The idea is brilliant, as it allows your software to very quickly test for and adopt to changing runtime byte-order states (which is applicable in some devices), but no way this will compile on multiple compilers, without having to do some questionable, arcane workarounds:

int32 DNA_GetEndianness(void) { union { uint8 c[4]; uint32 i; } u; u.i = 0x01020304; if (0x04 == u.c[0]) return DNA_ENDIAN_LITTLE; else if (0x01 == u.c[0]) return DNA_ENDIAN_BIG; else return DNA_ENDIAN_UNKNOWN; }

Pretty straightforward, but then comes the MSVC compiler. And if you think you can get it to do this otherwise by turning optimizations etc. off, think again. Here’s the disassembly….:

_TEXT SEGMENT _DNA_GetEndianness PROC mov eax, 1 ret _DNA_GetEndianness ENDP END

In music production I absolutely hate my tinitus. Sometimes you gotta listen real close to a subtle change in harmonics, but then BEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPP. Well, the beep is literally present all the time, but over time you learn to ignore it. But when you have to focus real well, there it comes again.
