What is the safest version of flash player to target? Is it safe to target flash player 10?

Also, I did some investigating on youtube to see what version are they targeting , and if I’m not mistaken they are targeting version 8?

In My opinion, safest is to target the latest version. I personally did not worry about the target flash player anytime. But I would like to see what others have to say on this.

accordingly to adobe if I interpreted the data correctly (I’m not sure about it but here we go)

for September 2010 in the following countries: US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand people have installed:

flashplayer 10.1 on 73.8% computers. flashplayer 10 on 24.1% computers and flashplayer 9 and bellow on 1.1% computers

there can be only 100% so if Flash Player 9 & below is 99.0% and Flash Player 10 is 97.9% and Flash Player 10.1 73.8%

we can assume the content will run in obvious in the highest version present, if we have multiple version installed, so we have 73.8% users for FP 10 .1

then if the FP 10 .1 is not present we have FP 10 with 97.9% but we need to remove the percentage of FP 10 .1, 73.8% and we get 24.1% computers were we will definitely find FP 10 as the highest flash player present

and lastly we have 99.0% for FP 9 but because we have at least 97.9% were there is definitely FP 10 and FP 10 .1 to run our content, the remaining 1.1% is people who have at maximum FP9 or bellow to run the content.

hope I got this right :)

I don’t know how adobe got those numbers, but maybe flash player communicates with adobe in some way.

Like one needs to know how many computers are out there, and then for each of those computer to have an idea what player is installed if there is a player installed.

Probably those percentage are assumed from a reference group how the tv audience works. Mystery.

edit:

the numbers were there

http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/methodology/

like for US they conduct the survey on 600 people and on Germany on 350 people. Hmm, are way to few even comparing with a tv audience study. Seams Adobe are cheap and do not want to spend to much money of these surveys. :) I have no trust in those percentage now, but maybe is just me, I do not trust statistics in general.
