Mine is:

Family think you must design stuff for them for free, and when you charge them, they give you this frown from out of town.

I lost my ass designing for family many times till last year, when I decided to never ever do work for family ever again!

Getting scammed with a lot of money through PayPal by a client.
I sometimes design stuff for my family but I like it. I like helping them and I always do it when I feel like it and I don’t postpone actual work that pays.

Haha well i design free for my immediate family (i.e my mother and dad) . After all, they are the reason I am a developer. And I live in their house, they never asked me to pay for the food they give me or the bed :p

But when it comes to friends or cousins, It depends how close they are to me, and what the purpose is for the project :p

My dad currently asked me to make a website for his company, and well, I would be doing that soon enough :p (later Ill ask him to buy me a car or something :D )

And ohh the worst experience was when my client, back in december, decided not to pay and disappeared. Although I was lucky not to have given him the project files, I still lost over 2000$ :(

Just to be clear. I am not talking about immediate family like my brothers, mom and dad. I never charge them, they always help me, so it is a small price to pay. But beyond that, I have cut off services to the “outside”. I actually have cousins, who I don’t hear from in 2 years, and then I receive a phone call, and it’s them wanting something.

If it was me, I’ll start breaking their kneecaps at the $300 range!

Haha yes, I did not realize the trap I was putting myself into. I had been working with that client for over 2 months, and each time there would be an advance payment and final payment. We continued this practice for 5 to 6 times in the 2 months until one day there was a bigger project, and we started hourly charges. the project was to finish in 2 weeks, and in 4 phases. 4 days per phase and payments after every phase. I worked for the first phase and got the payment, but forgot to get it in the second phase, while in the third phase I asked for the money of the two phases I worked in but he replied rudely and requested the invoice on how much I was working. And when I sent him the invoice, he stopped replying and disappeared. Since he was an international client, being in NY I contacted a friend and a cousin to track him down but turns out the company he was working for had not been launched and he just disappeared.
