So i was wondering if any of you sound experts had some experience and recommendations on microphones. I am starting a series of tutorials and basic podcasting and i am trying to find a mic that makes that my voice sexy, i am sure you know what i mean by that :D

Price is difficult, i can imagine i get a sexy voice if i pay 500Euro’s for a mic, but i am trying to find something lower then 100.

So if anyone has any idea, please share ! Or just share your experiences with the microphone you own.

Would really appreciate it !

Hello

You should maybe list if :

1. You use a Soundcard on your PC. 2. If yes, which one 3. If no, what kind of plugs do you have on your PC to connect a microphone.

Cheers Daniel

For “a sexual voice” you should work over the voice. The microphone can’t replace a voice.

Basic Info About Microphones
Types microphones:
- Dynamic Microphones – are generally seen as live or stage microphones. In dynamic microphones a small movable induction coil, positioned in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet, is attached to a thin diaphragm and when sound vibrates this diaphragm, the movement produces a small current through electromagnetic induction and the principle is in fact pretty much the same as in a loudspeaker, only reversed.

- Condenser Microphones – are often seen as the more refined cousins of dynamic microphones and traditionally they were more expensive than dynamic mics.In this design the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor, and sound vibrations produce changes in the distance between the plates creating an electrical current. However, to work, condenser microphones need a power supply to charge the plate, and this is commonly provided as 48 volt phantom power from a mixing desk or from an internal battery.

- Ribbon Microphones – Considered by many as the most natural sounding microphones ever made, ribbon microphones were immediately embraced by the broadcast and recording industries in the early 1930s.
Ribbon Microphones have gained a reputation for being fragile and it’s true that the ribbons can break or become distorted by wind pressure; even slamming a lid shut on the mic box has been known to wreck a ribbon but this doesn’t mean that they can’t deal with high SPLs if a sensible pop shield is used.

If you want VERY sexy voice, you need a ribbon mic… but that’s complicated and not really cheap.
If your limit is 100$, then you should considder a “budget” condenser. I found for you a nice bundle that gives you a preamp, pop shield, shock mount and cable together with the mic, all for 84 euros.

Hey Massfocus,

Well, if this was purely for music sake I would have a lot to recommend :)

I don’t do any podcasts, however I know a few people who have been on a budget and have really been impressed with this mic called the “Blue Snowball” It’s made specifically for the podcaster in mind. It actually plugs in via USB port, works with windows and mac, and has a price tag of around $100 US :)

The homepage is here: http://www.bluemic.com/snowball/

There are also tons of reviews on youtube, here is one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHBKEE4tZmY

Hope that helps!

I also can tell you a lot more about mics for music than for podcasting, so take my two cents for what it’s worth :).

If you don’t already have an audio interface that allows for an XLR or at least 1/4” connection, a USB mic like the Blue mentioned above will be your best bet.

If you do have an interface that you can plug an XLR cable into, you have a lot more options. For instance, MXL makes very affordable condenser mics in your price range that seem to get decent reviews. Also they have a ribbon mic for $100 USD :

I realize you’re not there yet, but if down the line you’re considering investing more into it, you may also start thinking about using a preamp (which in my experience add as much or more sonic quality (or lack thereof) to the sound) as well as a compressor to limit the dynamic range of your voice. Here’s a thought:

In tandem with:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Golden-Age-Project-Pre73-Preamp?sku=580975

$750 is a lot more than $100, but will give you pro sounding results.

All said and done, really it depends on your voice (male, female, deep, high ??) and your personal preference more than anything.

With budget of 100E, it doesn’t really matter what mic you buy (pre-amp is playing a big role too), just don’t buy Beringer or Samson mics. :)

Do you think Beringher or Samson mics aren’t good for the money, what brand would you buy ? :) hehe
