Has anyone tried to hire developers fulltime this year? It is soooo difficult to find available devs, that are skilled enough to start working. Even with amazing offers that is.

In the city where we have one of our offices, it used to be easier to find relatively good people to hire. Now, I made a simple list with the companies that hire in the tens or hundreds, and it’s not even complete: Microsoft, Endava, Embarcadero, Continental, BitDefender, Amazon, Pentalog, RomSoft, Comodo, The Red Point, Softvision, Synygy, Mind Software, grapefruit, code40, OSF GLOBAL SERVICES , Eye Partner, Ocenture, Webfusion, Neogen, Siemens Automotive, Lead Soft.. the list can go on.

How can small startups compete with such guys? There’s too much demand, too little people to choose from. Doesn’t it happen in your countries as well?

Pay more and you won’t have any problem to hire developer’s fulltime :P , if you don’t have the money offered options ….

That’s definitely the case here too. At the IT programme here at the university, people often get offered positions while they’re still getting their degree, and there’s a 100% employment rate amongst the graduates ;)

Obviously you don’t want to compete directly with the big guys. Human resource management is difficult and great devs either join the big guys or go freelance by themselves. For small startup I think it’s best to keep moving until you evolve and get more opportunities.

you need to realise what you can offer that the big cats can’t… there’s never been a better time to be a developer but that means that alot of people are trying and sadly don’t make the grade, IMO they mostly end up working for the big cats.

Grant skinner wrote a great series of articles on creating great developers, rather than finding them. Here is the first article .

Thanks guys. We don’t even get as far as discussing about payment, since they are already hired or something. Planning to open offices in other cities as well. :)

There are so many reasons. Maybe at some point in your life you’ll want to be part of something bigger, something that can be built by a team only.

There are so many reasons. Maybe at some point in your life you’ll want to be part of something bigger, something that can be built by a team only.

I would disagree, when taking contract work you often work within a team and can build some amazing things… I don’t see any downsides to contract work over full time employment other than job security…

from what i know working as a developer for over 10+ years at the end of the day, its better to put your ideas into something yourself as you will definitely profit more from it in the long run. all companies just use their employees as cash cows.

but yes i agree with what MSFX says.
