Hi VideoHivers,
i’m looking for a new objective for my new Canon 7D.
At the moment i only use the Canon 24-105mm L lens but i want to get a new one in the next time.

Which one would you recommend me to buy next?
I’ve looked at the EF 50mm 1.4, what’s your opinon on this one?

Hope to hear a lot of professional tips, thank’s in advance! :)

Depend what you want to shot. I have 50 1.4 it was first one I purchased and it’s great! But lately I almost don’t use it.

With 24-104 and crop sensor of 7D you probably miss wider angles?

For now my prefered lens (I use canon 600D, also crop): EF-S 17-55 IS (great universal lens), EF 70-200 IS II, and recently purchased fisheye EF 8-15 and now love this too. Non of them can compete with 50 1.4 for low light but from practical side 50 1.4 limited to home portraits etc. Of course you can shot anything also with it like landscapes or city views but there are better zoom choises for that.

Good luck!

Best Regards Andrey

The Zeiss 50mm 1.4 Planar is an amazing lens. It’s got that delicately sweet bokeh.

I mostly use same lens as yours, 24-105 mm L, I’m really happy with this, super sharp! I’m not sure what you need your lenses for, but my next upgrade will be in one of those ultra wide:

-Canon 17-40mm L f.4 USM -Canon 14mm f2.8 L II USM

If you have money to invest go for a full Canon L lenses set and you will be happy :)

Last week I have bought a Canon 5D Mark 2. I bought 24-105+ 50 mm f1.4

I think everyone should have a 50 mm 1.4. if you have some money maybe you can buy 50 mm f1.2

: )

A 50mm is a good choise for a lot of situations and a MUST for video recording!!
but on a crop sensor you have to go with a 35mm in order to achieve the same focal length!

I have a Nikon D5100 and I use a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 the most of the time,
love the sharpness and the performance in low light situation.

Also I think everyone should have a prime lens in their arsenal
they are the perfect lenses to learn how to master DOF an bokeh
and thanks to the low weight and dimension you will get a less shaky footage if you’re going to film!

Wow, thank’s for all your great answers!

I will mostly use the lens for filming, so the 50mm 1.4 sounds really interesting, or do i really need 35mm?
The Canon EF 35mm 1:1,4 L costs to much for a secondary lens in my opinion
as well as the 50mm 1.2… and the 50mm 1.8 is to cheap, isn’t it? :D

1.8 is not sooo different 1.4 but Im choosing 1.4. Because it is a step for 1.2 : )

You need some money of course. but 1.4 is excellenty light precision : ))

I’ve just found this lens: “Sigma 50mm F1,4 EX DG HSM”
Has anyone experience with it? Is it worth the price difference?
