I was looking for opportunities to earn for living by making music, when I found AudioJungle by google. I was impressed by top authors and I decided to sign in.

In time i found out that it is all about top authors. They are on the list every month and it creates huge income for theme. Most people use only top authors items because it’s easy to find and they now it’s good. I’m going to invest more time in other marketplaces where is no best sellers list. That is more fair for new authors. On AJ it is almost imposible to get there now.

Found ActiveDen in March 2007 – at the time I was working at a full time job, and was in between projects browsing the web – I think I clicked on a Google banner and found the site.. I think at the time there were under 300 authors. I saw you could make money by uploading files, so since I was bored at work I decided to make one file to test it out, and the rest is history :) So long story short, I think what inspired me to join was pure curiosity because at the time no authors had sold more than $5000 in stock yet – so it was more just for fun than big profits.

Hi Iman! I recognize at least one of those. ;)

While I’m here, what inspires me as an author is simply the opportunity we have here. We’re all in total control of our own destinies and we can do as much or as little as we need to satisfy our own personal goals whether they’re financial goals or satisfying creative thirst.

The ability to be creative and make something digital and then sell it to an audience that appreciates it and can put it to good use in a project, it’s just always fascinated me.

I take a slightly different approach to selling on the Marketplaces than some, I actually enjoy being a ‘hobbyist’. So instead of letting the financial opportunity drive me or focus too heavily on what customers want, I prefer to create items that I like myself and to exercise some kind of creativity. If those items get accepted and someone purchases them, then that’s a bonus! This approach is not for everyone of course, many of you do this for a living (and if you really want to be successful you should ALWAYS create what customers want!), but I’ve always loved the ability to use the Marketplaces as an expression of creativity and make some residual income along the way.

That’s the beauty to me – the Envato Marketplaces are an amazing platform to sell digital content and you can go as far and work as hard as you want to. All our Elite and Power Elite authors – there’s a reason they’re successful – they’re dedicated and they put in a huge amount of time and effort and hard work and their commitment pays off. I’d love to be more focused and dedicated to selling more items and higher quality items, and perhaps one day I’ll try that, but for right now, I’m still loving the flexibility of being a ‘hobbyist’.

Are there any other ‘hobbyists’ out there with a similar approach to selling on the Marketplaces?

Yep that sounds about right. I made my music purely for my own enjoyment, so it’s pretty awesome that it gets sales. With the graphics I try to make things useful for buyers, but I’m really doing it for the creativity. I like to try different things, some sell quite well, some not so much. :)

When I started this thread, I put a different title. I was asking specifically WHO and WHAT but I think the new title is better. After reading all the posts, it’s not always a “WHO” that motivates or inspires us but sometimes cool Lamborghini car can be the reason :). Thanks to whomever change it.
