Guess there will come i time people will offer a neck massage and a free paint of your apartment if you buy there theme :)
Where can I purchase a theme that includes this? Please provide a link!

@FinalDestiny: I agree that it’s our items but it’s against the rules. I may do this on my own website or on my support forum but I can’t advertise it on my ThemeForest item description page.

I remember I’ve read it somewhere on knowledge base.

It’s only against the rules to ‘promote’ services like that ‘on themeforest’.

If people buy your theme and end up on your own site, you may offer them whatever you want – envato has nothing to do with that.

But besides that, tommusrhodus has a point. But nothing to do about it except making sure that author’s aren’t promoting it on themeforest.

I am just waiting for the day the multipurpose madness will be cured. For the day when people won’t treat their site like a McDs meal. But this is just daydreaming (or evening dreaming) :)

90 out of 100 themes are just using the term ‘multipurpose’ because the theme isn’t really for anything specifiek and has a generic look, which is not bad per se. But this way every generic looking theme is a ‘multipurpose’ theme.

There aren’t many REAL multipurpose themes out there ( which is good since then a theme would be really bloated with options )

I think it’s allowed mate, a theme in popular themes has been doing since start and I don’t see it removed .. if you were told to remove it , it is not fair. As one theme is openly doing and it has to be fair with everyone. Just my view :)

I’ve found it:

This is the official response that I’ve got:

Unfortunately, authors may not offer free or bonus items or services outside of the main download package on the Marketplaces, nor promote free items or services anywhere on the Marketplaces.

And here is the article on knowledgebase:

http://support.envato.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/222

If you’ve found something like this on the pops, may be you should report it to support ;)

both are different in kb it mentions we cannot distribute our items for free , it doesnt mention anything related to services.. either you had a free item I think or you should ask for clarification since it costed you money mate .. imo support is also a free service :P

The response Iman got from Support is of course correct:

Unfortunately, authors may not offer free or bonus items or services outside of the main download package on the Marketplaces, nor promote free items or services anywhere on the Marketplaces.

Support is classified as an opt-in option and is not considered a promotional service.

I think the missing piece of the puzzle is a clear definition of “support” that is consistent across all authors. For one author, support is just bug fixes and clarification of documentation. For another author, support means small css tweaks and one-line updates. Now the trend is customization and free setup. Next it could be free SEO and article writing. With authors constantly one-upping each other and setting buyers’ expectations that these services are standard “support” it could get tough for authors in the long term.

Today you can enjoy providing free services, which should be paid, but tommorow you’ll get tired doing this for free and it will be too late because you started it and too many followed you. Don’t do something that you’ll regret later. This is my message for everyone who is doing this.

@FinalDestiny, you know very well what is good and what not. Setting up a the demo data is ok, i would say, if it can be done very quickly, but this shouldn’t be advertised in item description. In a very short time every buyer will expect this from you and you will start to hate doing this for free… This is how everything is born here, remember “responsive”, “one page”, “page builders”(but this is not a feature).

I have to agree with some of the authors here, I know others hate it.

I came to a point someday a random client asks me about some installation and I replied that the answer is in the documentation. His reply was amazing: “Are you kidding me? This is your support you provide?”.

Yes, this trend is really going wrong. Instead of working happily on some new and cool innovations for the web we have to explain to our customers why we cannot provide support in some cases or why we are not obliged by any law or convention to provide support.

Support is the 95% cases of low rating. I know this has an explanation as well, considering the world economics going worse everyday, people tend to want things cheaper and cheaper. Users don’t really care that we are a “DO IT YOURSELF” community, a community built by mostly “ONE MAN TEAM”, (our experienced clients are the same, buys a theme for a client, builds some content and cash in, very happy in the end)...

In my opinion, the real trend should go to the point where clients can appreciate the corporate level quality we provide for so low prices, and understand the rules of the marketplace and really try to do things on their own: do a back-up and push the button, it’s not TNT, just a couple of files really. Users should be happy with the documentation we provide and say hi from time to time.

It’s so wonderful life, why waste it for… 5-20-1000 more sales?

You shouldn’t care what other authors are offering for free. If you can’t sell the value of being paid for add-on services like installations or customization, then you’re probably in the wrong business. If you make that value and cost clear to customers you won’t get complaints. Maybe you’ll get fewer customers, but that’s a choice.

On the other hand…

Being an author here is getting weirder and weirder every day as Envato keeps prices low, expectations for support up, and pushes services (aka 90% of support) to Microlancer (I mean…Envato Studio).

The Envato 2020 plan is starting to become a lot clearer. Start strategizing authors.
