Go search for a themeforest theme on google and try to illegally download it. I have / do try to find my own themes to make sure they aren’t being pirated and it’s not even REMOTELY close to being as easy to find them as it is to find all of the woo themes.

You’re saying that’s moot?

Tell that to the music industry, or Hollywood.

Which that brings up another good point. People can already pirate themes just as they can pirate music and dvds, but they know it’s illegal. Not everyone chooses to do this even though they may know it’s possible. If it’s suddenly legal now to resell themes or give them away for free even, people who would have bought a themeforest license to run an upstanding, legitimate business may now just buy the bundle of all themes for $15 because after all it is legal and there is nothing “ethically” wrong with it.

Umm I can find a couple thousand themeforest links…... Again this isn’t a discussion for the forums as it promotes bad practice…

Btw the media industry doesn’t go after pirates overseas(that they can’t touch legally) they go after the end users that download them in countries where they actually have legal action, or try getting laws passed remember SOPA?

What about the idea that people who want to do things honestly and legitimately won’t download something that is pirated?

I think we’ve probably back and forthed on this particular point enough for now.

There’s a big difference between items distributed under the GPL, and those that aren’t, regardless of the specific options for recourse.

I don’t know Matt Mullenweg, but i can only conclude that this is a huge hypocrite. He poses as “defender of GPL and free software”, to the point that he bans people by association with a “offender company”, and at the same time accepts sponsorship from MICROSOFT.

Great point. Once you cross over into that, it is a whole different ball game.

Don’t know if this was posted but my opinion is that all this debate about GPL (and whatever) is related to the fact that you can purchase wordpress themes through wordpress official website. So they are just fighting one of their bigger competitors (themeforest)

In a hypothetical scenario where envato would had paid a small fee for each theme hosted here that is sold through wordpress official store, then everyone will had been big friends, speak on every conventions they want, drink beers, go to strip bars or do bungee jumping.

Don’t know if the two are the same (there’s .org and .com and I’ve never understood the difference between the two), but you make a good point. You’d think Envato will attract more stock authors with the split licensing. Personally I’d never sell something 100% GPL. If I wanted to give away the rights to my work, I’d just give it away.

not a big mystery, is right there in the first paragraph

“WordPress.com is brought to you by some of the same folks who work on the open source blogging software available at WordPress.org.”

not that this is a bad thing

WordPress.com is run by Automattic, and is a commercial venture. It runs on the WordPress software.

WordPress.org is run by the WordPress Foundation, is an open source run community, and it’s where you can download the WordPress software.

Matt Mullenweg founded all of the above.
