Your studio setup?

Oi! I’m wondering what gear all you guys use to write things? Has this been covered before? What worked and what didn’t?

As mentioned in another thread I messed around with ScreamTracker a lot as a kid, ended up buying a Korg EM1 and then a Novation KS4 and Logic Express to sequence the thing.

I found hooking up all the hardware very time consuming and annoying, hard to bring it back into the state it was for performing anything. The most productive environments I reckon are fully managed like the EM1 or better something like Reason or Logic Pro.

But you just ain’t as cool performing off a laptop, you gotta have all the gear and cables

My setup is pretty basic.

A computer with lots of ram and harddrive.
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
M-Audio Keystation e49 (U S B )
Mixer + a decent mic
tons of VSTs
Wavelab (for editing)
Reason & Fruity
And most important of all, a new comfortable chair!!

i rarely have the keystation plugged in due to lack of space, so usually i just add notes with the mouse.

Lol! Mine is even more basic I think:

• Comp: 1gb Ram
• HDD x 4: approx 700gb
• Soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy 5.1dx
• Software: Reason 4, Recycle, Cubase 3sx, Soundforge 5, Audacity, VSTs
• Hardware: 2xPT-2500 Turntables, Rane TTM -56i Mixer, Mission Monitors
• Chair: Extremely uncomfortable (need to sort that out..lol)

I don’t have a midi keyboard at the moment, so I have managed to trick reason into accept qwerty keys as midi input when programming. Less than ideal..

Yeah, a good chair is very important. Used to sit on a kitchen steel chair until a few weeks ago. It busted my back and gave me that sexy quasimodo posture after a while.

Portable, USB (!) Means, i can slim down my setup a little by removing the mixer

Ah yeah, thats cool! How about just getting an audio interface with Phantom power? Then you can use your existing mics…

Because this is the cheapest way to get a fully functional recording studio, without the loss of quality

I don’t wanna use the old mic, it’s ok for basic stuff but not recording songs. And i hate the static that comes along when you pitch it just a little from it’s original frequency you know?

it’s only $200 bucks.
And i will get most of it back when i get rid of the mixer that only sits there collecting dust
