Hi GravityDept,

I would like to change the theme url: shop/skin/frontend/gravdept/acumen/ to something custom as I am developing this site for a client and have made considerable changes to the theme.

Please let me know if this is possible.

GravityDept

You can change the “gravdept/acumen” folder names to anything. It doesn’t matter to Magento what the folders are called. Make sure you also do this in /app/design/frontend/ and then update the store’s configuration in the Admin.

Thank you for the quick reply. I thought there was more to it than just renaming the folders. That means that the Configuration -> General -> Design codenames need to be changed accordingly, am I right?

GravityDept

Yes. After you rename the folders, you have to tell Magento to use the newly named “package/theme” folder. That’s all there is to it.

Hi,

Do you have a PSD of the sprite.png? So i can change the color of the icons.

Thank you

GravityDept

A layered PNG for the sprite is included in the /source folder for editing.

Is removing Register from the top links on the Acumen side or Magento. Having a challenging time getting that removed.

EDIT: Fixed in override.css! Easy peasy.

I am looking into buying Acumen. Is there a way to turn off “create an account” during checkout? The default would be guest checkout and there would be no option to register. In checkout is there a way to turn off step one checkout method? I don’t want users to have the option to sign in or create an account.

Many thanks. Rob

GravityDept

You would have to modify the Magento core to implement this.

Aside, I don’t think it’s a good idea to disallow users from registering under any circumstance. You’re only making it harder for them to make subsequent purchases and keep track of their order history.

hello, im having an issue figuring out where to put the link for the front page promo slider. do i replace “store url” with the appropriate link? or make a page for “link-1” and forward it to the appropriate link? or something else? this may be obvious to some, but i am still learning. thanks so much for responding.

GravityDept

If it’s an internal link then you want to use Magento’s {{store url=’the-link-destination’ }} method to set the link. You will need to create the page (can be called anything) and replace ‘the-link-destination’ with the page’s URL.

Seem to hve issues with the forward/backward buttons for promo slider. 3,4,5,6,7,8, would all work for featured products, then it suddenly stopped as well as new products.

Has this problem arisen in the past? I know it’s something easy I’m overlooking…

Rs

GravityDept

I don’t know what you mean by 3,4,5,6,7,8. You must have at least 3 products in each slider or the plugin doesn’t initialize correctly.

Default-user
hespv Purchased

Yes, anything more than 2 would show the arrows, alas, no arrows anymore. http://www.aloyd.com/home/

It seemed to happen amidst adding new products. I added a few with new dates and the sliders broke and went double line, and once I removed dates with no new products the arrows appeared again. Now I only have 5 new products and 4 featured products as 5 resulted in a double line again. I’ll add another featured product so you’ll see.

Thanks on a Sunday!

Also, below a product page title “Write a review” is going to a 404 instead of scrolling a little down the page. I don’t want to take too much of your time, so I’ve deleted it now, but letting you know. 90% chance it’s on my end, but if it was a previous question with a quick fix I’m all ears.

Rs.

GravityDept

The default config is 2 columns, but if you’re using a four column slider, then you need at least 5 products in each slider. The plugin needs the markup for a second slide to exist or it won’t initialize correctly.

The “write a reviews” links are broken because you’re using extensions in URLs (ex: product-name.html). The Acumen config recommends using extensionless URLs which has an added SEO benefit. Magento does not show reviews on the product page out-of-box. In order for Acumen to do this it must share some templates with the customer dashboard. Since those links originate from different parent modules, there isn’t any way I’ve found to code them working in both URL extension contexts. So they are optimized for the best-case scenario (extensionless URLs).

Your only alternative is reverting to Magento’s original links which would direct users away from the product page to a dedicated reviews page for each product.

Default-user
hespv Purchased

Yes, I added more items than what’s visible, it’s what’s so peculiar why the advance arrows aren’t showing.

To make links extensionless, is it a mere setting?

Default-user
hespv Purchased

Oh, right in your config .xls, cheers.

GravityDept

It looks like your page is not valid HTML. Some other HTML you wrote/customized is incorrect, and is breaking the valid nesting of elements. This could easily break plugins that expect markup in a specific format/hierarchy.

Yes, the URL extensions are assigned in the admin section ‘System > Configuration’.

Default-user
hespv Purchased

Yes you’re correct, I did some mods to make it a catalogue only site so something must’ve broken. Luckily saved the files I modded. Cheers again!

Rs

GravityDept

Focus on the CMS Pages to find the invalid markup. In those instances it can only be a problem from the header, content area, or footer that’s breaking things. Usually it’s the footer where people make mistakes.

Default-user
hespv Purchased

Yeah, re-uploaded the theme and arrows came back. Think it was me messing around with footer.phtml

Thanks for your help and patience!

Hi, do you guys recommend installing this theme on Magento Go? Or just over a regular hosing company? If so, do you have any recommendations that have easy installs of Magento? Or a most used hosting company for this?

Thanks. Rob

GravityDept

Magento Go is a totally different platform than Magento Community that is very restricted in what can be customized. For themes like Acumen you can only use Magento Community.

For hosting, I highly recommend Nexcess http://gravitydept.com/to/nexcess

You can read why on my profile and in the Acumen description.

Hello~ i purchased the template and i am having trouble changing the default image size in the product pages, i did look at the view.phtml file in the proper folder but is do not contain a image size spec! Help would be great!

GravityDept

That’s because view.phtml doesn’t hold the product images block. That content is rendered from /template/catalog/product/view/media.phtml.

You should Google “magento template path hints” to learn to how use this functionality to identify which block is rendering which content on the page.

1.3.4 has a Google Analytics bug (not really a bug, rather an omission of code). You have a googleanalytics.xml in the Acument layout, however there’s no reference to the actual ga.phtml file. So anybody using 1.3.4 and Google Analytics won’t get stats through using the Magento settings.

Need to add this in to fix it: <block type="googleanalytics/ga" name="google_analytics" as="google_analytics" template="googleanalytics/ga.phtml" />

On a side note I would advise changing the reference to “after_body_start” instead of before_body_end due to Google Analytics script being asynchronous and it’s better to have it at the top.

GravityDept

That’s incorrect. Google Analytics is 100% functional in Acumen 1.3.4.

The googleanalytics.xml file in Acumen does reference googleanalytics/ga.phtml but this file is not part of Acumen — nor is it required to be. The theme fallback system loads this template from the “base/default” package.

The XML file loads this block in “after_body_start” for compatibility with a large number of users who are still using the synchronous Google Analytics script. This is earmarked to get updated in a future release, but it doesn’t affect the functionality of analytics in the meantime.

Default-user
Zimmer Purchased

I am aware that the file doesn’t reference anything in Acumen – however the fallback wasn’t being applied when I was using the theme. Anyway, if you can confirm it’s working then that’s fine – It must be my specific case as to this problem.

GravityDept

Make sure you’re using Acumen 1.3.4 with Magento 1.7.0.2. Releases cannot be mixed/matched — they are specifically paired and tested together. Release compatibility is noted on the changelog.

Also refresh Magento’s cache/indices after making any admin or code changes, and ensure Google Analytics is set to enabled.

Hi there, Is there a straightforward way of removing the left hand filter column from category/search results and gain an extra column of products?

Any help much appreciated, Phil.

GravityDept

You have to set all the categories to ‘is anchor’ = no. Then modify the layout XML to hide the left column and change the product collection to return four products per row. Finally modify the catalog list template to adjust the grid so four products can fit.

Thanks!

Hey Guys, is it fairly straight forward to add extensions like these to this theme: http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/affiliate-5704.html

http://www.webtexsoftware.com/fulfillment-by-amazon-magento-extension

I am looking into purchasing this theme and this is my 1st time working in Magento and just want make this will all work together.

Thanks, Rob

GravityDept

You can use any extension with Acumen. I’ve never used that extension before so I can’t comment on it specifically.

Theme and extension compatibility is an issue for all platforms, including Magento. Themes aren’t tested with every extension for the same reason extensions aren’t tested with every theme. It’s a many:many relationship, so both sides try to coexist by working off the core Magento code.

Naturally, there can be conflicts when integrating custom code that was developed independently. Sometimes the theme or extension needs to be modified so they can work together, and sometimes they work just fine.

About placing sliders on a page.

When I place more than 1 category sliders (with different names) on one page, it seems that the slider-controls are missing. This is not the case when I just place one category slider or a category slider and a new-products slider on one page.

Is this a known limitation?

GravityDept

There shouldn’t be any problem using multiple product sliders on the same page. The controls appear hidden because they’re never inserted by the plugin. This indicates that the plugin didn’t initialize properly.

There must be enough products to generate a second slide in every slider on the page (at least 3 products in a 2 column slider). Otherwise there’s nothing to slide to and it doesn’t initialize correctly.

Addition to the previous post:

Could have someting to do with css; it seems that the slider-controls ‘hide’...

GravityDept

See previous comment (note: you can use the reply button to keep a chain of messages intact).

Default-user

Sorry, yes, thanks ;-). I check if there are enough items to get the slider to work. There are. So let me put it this way: if I would duplicate the category-slider on the home page – so basically putting 2 category-sliders, 4 columns width – below each other, then the slider arrows are gone… If I would do the same with the new-product slider, it gives no problems. I don’t get it :-(

GravityDept

I just tested in my dev site, and it’s working with two category sliders and a new products slider on the page. Try refreshing your cache/indices. If it’s not working can you post your URL, or send it to me in a direct message.

Default-user

I now found out that when I have 2 category sliders on one page, of which one has exactly 2 products in a 2 column setting (so, no arrow) and the second has 5 or more products in a 4 column setting (so there should be arrows), gives no arrows at all as a result. The site is in building fase, only accessable on strict IP’s…

GravityDept

Re-read the requirements for the sliders. A two column slider must have three products at least, otherwise there is no second slide to slide to and the plugin fails during initialization. The same code executes for all “product type” sliders, but they need the right content to work properly. If you introduce a situation where one slider fails it will cause all the sliders to fail.

Default-user

Yep, all cear! Thanks for responding so very quickly :-). That is really much appreciated! I know what to do now.

GravityDept

Cheers!

Hi, I have a question about static promo-1-3. I want to customize it in such as way : 1st col to be 6 navi-menu (selective categories), 2nd col to be text area and 3rd col is link with 3 rows of page links.

I am working it on my local computer. So I cannot show you example. http://www.moserengineering.com I want it to look like bottom half for above web site.

Thanks,

GravityDept

The “Static Promo 1/3” widget is good for displaying images, but if you’re displaying different types of content then just use a grid. That’s exactly what the static promos use for structure anyway. They just exist so you have something easy to copy/paste in.

For Shop by Brand in your demo, is that in the theme? I’ve yet to conquer that.

GravityDept

It’s an attribute. In Magento attributes are created like categories and products, they’re not tied to the theme at all. Any attribute you create that can be filtered and is enabled for filtering will appear in that way.

Hi Guys,

I just purchased this theme. Do you have installation instructions? I installed the app and skin on the root of my server, but I don’t understand what to put in these fields in magento:

Translations
Templates
Skin (Images / CSS)
Layout
Default

There is an extensive installation guide in the ZIP package. Look in the folder called “documentation”.

Hey Guys,

I’m having trouble getting this theme to work on Magento. What am I missing? I uploaded all the theme files as instructed to the FTP. Made the config changes, but am not seeing the theme at all: http://flipperr.nextmp.net/

If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. It seems like I have followed the installation instructions exactly…

Many thanks. Rob

GravityDept

First, refresh or disable the Magento cache. Then double-check that the theme is assigned properly in “Admin > System > Config > Design”. It looks like the skin files are in the correct location on the server, but the frontend is requesting those assets. So it can only be an outdated cache or config wasn’t assigned with the right package/theme.

Default-user
robrockla Purchased

Thanks. Yeah, the cache is disabled and I refreshed it as well. The Design settings are: Current Package Name: gravdept Translations: acumen Templates: acumen Skin (Images / CSS): acumen Layout: acumen Default: acumen

Is this correct?

Many thanks, Rob

GravityDept

Those are the correct values. It looks like some templates are rendering but others are not. It’s possible your FTP application dropped some files while uploading. Try erasing the Acume directories from your server and re-uploading the theme contents.

Also make sure you have not enabled the Magento compilation tool. This will not be cleared when the cache is refreshed. It’s best not to use this until you’re ready to launch.

Default-user
robrockla Purchased

I re-uploaded all the files, but still no go… There was no errors. What is Magento compilation tool? Where do I find it. There must be something I am missing here… I can’t get this theme to show up.

Default-user
robrockla Purchased

Where am I supposed to put the folder titled source? Is doesn’t say anything about that? That has concept, img, and media inside of it…

GravityDept

If you’re not able to follow the installation instructions successfully, see the documentation section “Hiring Us” for info about installation services. I’ll need to double-check all the steps you were meant to follow to confirm why your installation is not working.

Default-user
robrockla Purchased

Yeah, I followed the steps correctly… There is a folder titled “source” that is not mentioned in the instructions… Where does that go?

GravityDept

The “source” folder just contains editable image assets. It doesn’t need to be on the server because only the exported / optimized assets are used on the site.

How would I add custom buttons in my cms page?

GravityDept

Well, if they’re custom then it depends what you’ve decided they need to look like and do. The tools to make anything on the web are HTML and CSS.

Default-user
Phish82 Purchased

Basically the buttons used on the site, is there a shortcode to paste into the cms pages, ie the large or small buttons. Basically using the exsisting buttons as a menu with custom links to cms pages

GravityDept

There are no shortcodes in Magento like there are in WordPress. That’s actually a pretty bad practice from a content maintainability perspective.

The buttons are modular though and constructed from several classes. You can chain the together like class="button button-small button-subtle". You can inspect any button’s markup to see which classes it uses or refer to the CSS where this is all documented.

Hi, as a complete javascript novice I wonder if you could point me in the right direction.

We’re going to add the product reviews to a tab and I’d like to be able to link directly to the reviews tab from a category (so it opens when a link like http://www.plantmenow.co.uk/plants/bedding/winter-bedding-plants/24-winter-pansy-plants.aspx#tab-review is clicked).

I’m hoping that there’s just a couple of lines that I need to add to the jquery.run file – but I’ve tried all sorts and can’t seem to get it to work.

Brilliant theme by the way – saved us so much time not having to start from scratch !

GravityDept

Basically, you need to extend the tabs functionality. At line 192 of jquery.run.js, you can see after the click event handler is assigned the first link is selected, then then click is fired. This is what makes the first tab be selected when the page loads.

What you need to do before this happens is check whether the URL has a hash attached to it. If there is, then compare it to the hashes of the tab contents. If it matches, then fire the click event on that hash to select that tab. Otherwise, automatically select the first tab.

That should give you a head start on the necessary logic. I’ve made a note to consider integrating this in a future release.

Great, thank you! That’s got it working as we wanted
