Why aren’t our homepage slider’s working on greatfoodtours.com? We’re using the following code on the CMS page ‘home’:

{{block type="cms/block" block_id="facebook-root" template="cms/content.phtml"}} <div class="promo-slider promo-slider-right"> <div class="slides-container"> <div><a href="{{store url=" link-1=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Slide 1" /></a></div> <div><a href="{{store url=" link-2=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Slide 2" /></a></div> <div><a href="{{store url=" link-3=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Slide 3" /></a></div> </div> <ul class="promos"> <li><a href="{{store url=" sub=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 1" /></a></li> <li><a href="{{store url=" sub=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 2" /></a></li> <li><a href="{{store url=" sub=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 3" /></a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="grid"> <div class="grid_9">{{block type="catalog/product_list" category_id="116" column_count="3" label="Chocolate Tours" template="gravdept/catalog/category-slider.phtml" }}</div> <div class="grid_9">{{block type="catalog/product_list" category_id="112" column_count="3" label="Staff Picks" template="gravdept/catalog/category-slider.phtml" }}</div> </div> <div class="grid static-promo static-promo-1-3"> <div class="grid_4"><a href="{{store url=" link-1=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 1" /></a></div> <div class="grid_4"><a href="{{store url=" link-2=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 2" /></a></div> <div class="grid_4"><a href="{{store url=" link-3=""><img src="{{skin url=" media="" alt="Promo 3" /></a></div> </div>

See the documentation section “Troubleshooting”. The answer is there. It’s because you don’t have enough products in each slider.

Default-user

Thanks, but the documentation says the minimum number of products required in a 2-column slider is three products. We’ve added 3 products on Chocolate Tours (category_id=”116”) and 8 products on Staff Picks (category_id=”112”). Could it be something else?

Default-user

OK, got it – we had a 3-column slider, so the minimum number of products should be 4. Thanks!

GravityDept

That’s correct. You need 4 products in a 3 column slider for the slider to have something to slide to.

Hi, concerning the responsive version of the theme, you mentioned it was coming along. Could you give us an idea of when it could be ready? Your theme is our favorite so far, but we need one that is responsive. Thanks!

GravityDept

I never set date-based goals for releasing new versions of Acumen. Updates are only released when the level of quality level is up to my standards.

The responsive version of Acumen is mostly ready. I’ve been focusing on client work recently, and building a more comprehensive distribution and support center than ThemeForest can provide. This second part is required from my end before further updates to Acumen are released. I will be spending more time on this project over the next month.

If Acumen fits the majority of your needs then it won’t hurt to start familiarizing yourself with the current codebase and patterns.

GravityDept

No, that’s not how Snippets work. They only output HTML markup. Those configuration parameters belong in JS.

How could I move (or edit) the ‘Catagories’ from the layered navigation that show up in the left sidebar when I am viewing a product list.

Id like to have the sub-catagories display across the top of the products list page – rather than mixed in with the filter attributes so that they stand out better and are used more.

GravityDept

See this thread for some background: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/28220/

To show sub-categories from a given category you’ll need to do custom development.

How do I create a top navigation link like your ‘acumen tour’ category with custom products (not categories) shown in drop down

GravityDept

The Snippets for “Nav Before” and “Nav After” are just plain HTML. You can put any content in there. That’s what the “Acumen Tour” and “What’s This” menu items are in the demo.

justintime67

I don’t get it… I created a new static block, made the identifier: snippet_nav_after (guessed this is what it is, couldn’t find it in the readme) and then enabled it and cleared cache but nothing showing in the navigation bar…?

GravityDept

Are you using Acumen 1.3.4? See the documentation section “Snippets”. These were added in the lastest release. You can see the whole release history on the change log.

justintime67

I’m on 1.3.3, will it work on magento 1.6.2?

GravityDept

That’s why. I only added the nav snippets in Acumen 1.3.4. You can download the newer release and merge just the pertinent template, XML, and CSS changes for the nav. I don’t think it should be an issue using them with Magento 1.6.2.0. Otherwise I’d recommend updating Magento and using the latest releases of both.

justintime67

Ahh that makes sense.. I will try to give that a go cheers! Also, I have noticed when selecting the drop down menu with the mouse, the menu disappears when the mouse goes over the blank part between the link in the navigation bar and the sub categories in the drop down. Is this a bug with 1.3.3? Something to do with z-indexing?

GravityDept

If you’ve changed any attributes of the nav links that affect their height it could create a gap between the link and the menu. It needs to be exactly the right height for a smooth transition. There hasn’t ever been an issue with this to my knowledge in the default Acumen.

justintime67

Yep you were right, i had repositioned it. An idea for future releases: Insert category thumbnails into drop down menu (ie: cheapsuperfoods.com.au—> ‘Shop by Product’)

GravityDept

Putting thumbnails into navigation isn’t easy to support out-of-box for three reasons:

1. Catalogues can be any shape. They could be one level deep or four. There might be two sub-categories or twenty. The need to be flexible for all that variation impacts how navigation is designed.

2. There is a performance penalty with loading thumbnails for every category. It would be too easy store admins to hurt performance without understanding what is happening.

3. It requires making significant modifications to Magento’s core, which can interfere with multi-store environments and third-party extensions.

There isn’t a one-size-fits all approach that will work here. In my client work, I almost always integrate thumbnails into the navigation, but their use is designed for and appropriate to the content. They’re also usually hand-coded to get the level of control and performance demanded.

That’s why I implemented the snippets for nav before/after. They’re suited for inserting custom HTML into Acumen’s navigation. So this capability does exist out-of-box, it’s something you choose to use or not depending on the project’s needs.

justintime67

The snippets are a good idea but they don’t have the same impact. I see where you are coming from.. I imagine just enabling the thumbnails is not a big enough project for you?

Perhaps you could then tell me which file controls the thumbnails in acumen and I can have a go myself :)

GravityDept

I don’t understand what you’re saying about impact. The two nav snippets are blank slates. You can put literally any content into one of them to create 100% custom navigation. You don’t need to show the Magento generated navigation at all. It would only exist behind the scenes for the manually created nav.

As I mentioned, Magento itself does not use category thumbnails in the navigation. You would need to modify the core to include them in the generated nav tree. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for the reasons mentioned above. That’s why Magento doesn’t do this, and why I haven’t implemented it either. It would only be usable for a fraction of stores using Acumen.

Navigation with custom elements should be tailored to the content not auto-generated. That’s why it’s a better idea to construct this manually because you have full control.

Hello, we’re using Magento’s Contact Form on http://www.greatfoodtours.com/gft/contact/ by placing the following code on the ‘contact’ CMS Page: {{block type="core/template" name="contactForm" form_action="/contacts/index/post" template="contacts/form.phtml"}}. The form is loading properly, but when submitting it we get page not found. Should we change the form_action or update a layout/template file? Thanks!

GravityDept

The contact page already exists. It cannot be embedded in a CMS page. ‘contacts’ is one of the core modules. When you embed the template it’s just inserting the markup. There are no controllers or models associated with the CMS Page to handle the data.

Default-user

OK, so we’ll just keep using the default “contacts” page instead. Thanks!

Was there a reason you weren’t using it in the first place?

I don’t like the magento search. It is not returning relevant results. While I am loath to add on any extensions that aren’t absolutely necessary, I’ve tried resorting to extensions. I have had no luck, the three I’ve tried didn’t work. I guess maybe there are conflicts.

I can’t yet do anything with sphinx, but I am certainly willing to pay for it (and already have). Can you recommend a search extension or a good solution for returning relevant search results?

GravityDept

The search built into Magento is not the most accurate out-of-box, but it can improve with tuning. See: http://www.blueacorn.com/magento-blog/improve-magento-sales-with-better-search-results/

I have not experimented with third-party search replacements, but I would look into Apache Solr or Google custom search. Those might be viable options.

Hi there, Having difficulty with a few items:

1. http://acumen-magento.gravdept.com/prada-zip-polo-shirt This seems to indicate that a tiered pricing capability is built into the template, but I haven’t found how to manage this. Help?

2. I don’t know if the following is peculiar to this theme, or if it’s an issue with Magento, but Related, Up & Cross sell options disappear once a product has been saved once. Obviously this isn’t a good thing if we want to go in later and add any of these options.

3. There should be a way to create a different weight for different product options. For instance, a different fl oz size available for a particular item (not the same as a garment size difference that probably wouldn’t make a difference in the shipping price). In this case, choosing the larger size will affect the shipping price, so there should be a way to indicate this in the option itself. I thought this had been in Magento at one point, but I’m not seeing it right now.

4. In chrome, the price area isn’t updating when the quantity changes. Can this be fixed?

Thanks in advance.

GravityDept

1. Tier pricing is built into Acumen. From the Magento Admin, when editing a product look on the “Prices” tab. There is a section for adding tier prices.

2. If it disappears from the frontend, then the cache is just being invalidated and it needs to be refreshed. If the Magento Admin is not saving those relationships in the database, then you have another problem. Probably something in your core files or server environment isn’t configured right.

3. If product options lead to the customer buying a different SKU (ex: different size of same product) then you should be using configurable products. All the individual SKUs are simple products that are linked from the Magento Admin.

Magento has never shown anything other than price differences between configurable options in the frontend though. You may need to clarify the differences between options for customers in the product info.

4. The price never changes when you adjust the quantity field before adding to cart. It is showing the price for a single unit. That’s standard procedure for eCommerce sites.

We’re having a problem with date configuration on http://www.greatfoodtours.com and don’t know how to solve it:

When we select 12/05/2013 on the product page, the checkout page reads Dec 5, 2103 instead of May 12 2013. This only happens on our website using Accumen, so I wonder if it’s related with some template.

Here are some printscreens of checkout pages that were booked with 12/05/2013:

Wrong on Accumen: http://imm.io/12pUi Correct on another theme: http://imm.io/12pWn

GravityDept

It looks like it’s working to me, the correct date was sent to the cart when I added this tour: http://cl.ly/OAwM

I’m afraid I can’t give any specific advice since I don’t know how your configurable or custom attributes are set up, if it’s an issue with the calendar widget not passing the right values, or a problem with internationalization / date format mismatches. With custom functionality like this there are many things that could go wrong.

OK, thanks!

I need to change the blue color bread crumbs to another color – the Home link is blue, the current page is a dark gray – but cannot find the “Home” setting in the CSS….I was able to change a lot there, but not all the boxes on widgets etc. either…please point me where these must be hard coded somewhere…

GravityDept

Use Firebug or Web Inspector to see which rules are applying. Then you can find the property in the CSS file. Not all colors are hexidecimal, some use rgba notation.

Okay – I got the breadcrumbs and most of the text right – now the inspectors aren’t helping me figure out where the very top-nav section header widget gets it’s blue color – “Cart” “Wishlist” etc – it looks like it’s in jquery of some sort?

GravityDept

It’s not jQuery, not styles are applied that way. All style information is part of Acumen’s CSS. It might help if you read through the unminified base.css file. It’s separated into sections with comments so it’s easier to see how groups of rules are applied to sections of content.

I have http://greenlifestylemarket.com. The store is off to a very nice start and I owe much of that to your beautiful theme.

But I have had three customers complain that there is not a “Continue Shoppping” option at the checkout URL (http://greenlifestylemarket.com/checkout/cart/).

I’ve Google it and from what I see this is something that other Magento stores have by default. But the information is rather vague so I know I may be wrong.

Is there some way to enable this “Continue Shopping” button right under the “Checkout Now” button?

GravityDept

The “Continue Shopping” button is in the template file, it’s just commented out. The reason for this is the link doesn’t work if the user returns directly from a bookmark, so it can be confusing. That’s why it’s hidden by default in Acumen. You can always uncomment and change its position.

Just edit the template file. Turning on Magento’s “template path hints” is the best way to find which template renders which content on the page. This will make customizing a lot easier in the future.

Make sure that you activated them for the right “store”. It’s not a global setting. Also flush and disable the Magento cache to get the frontend to render from config.

Hello, I’ve set up my site using your theme (which is absolutely great by the way) and i’ve bumped in to an issue I absolutely can’t seem to get around.

Every page on my site takes up to 45 seconds to display. Here’s the breakdown on the timeline for the homepage : Connecting : 32ms Sending : 1ms Waiting : 30.67s Receiving : 2ms

Now i’ve done a little searching on the web, and i’ve seen it can be caused by insufficient server ressources or obviously a coding error. The server is fine so its mosts likely the code, but i’m not getting any errors in the debug console, so its not css or js related (as far as I can tell). One other probable cause (according to what i’ve read) could be an error with reference/block tags in the local.xml file but I haven’t found anything wrong.

My error log displays the following :

GravityDept

It looks like your server doesn’t have enough resources to re-process images, and it’s running out of memory while processing the request. This would explain why the request takes so long before timing out.

Unless you’re skilled in server administration, you should look into using a hosting environment designed specifically for Magento. I have a detailed recommendation for Nexcess in the documentation.

It’s also very possible that code you’ve written or an extension is doing something that would cause the server to bleed memory until it crashes. This isn’t something you can debug entirely from the error stack though. You’d have to work backwards to isolate the issue.

Default-user

Magento does not have a random products function because it couldn’t be cached and that would be terrible for performance. On the home page you should be featuring new, high value, or excess inventory items. Just showing random items is a missed opportunity from a business perspective too.
