Nice theme. Is there any way to add a sidebar to the homepage? Or perhaps place graphics [specifically, advertisements] between post entries on the home page? I LOVE this theme but my blog has a number of ads that would require sidebar space or space between the posts to accommodate.

Also, can I add a full-width custom banner with my blog’s title, or am I restricted to the space you’ve alloted?

Thanks so much.

ThemeBeans

Hey soxfiend2004, if you’re a bit familiar with HTML (and a bit less with PHP) you wont have a problem doing so. You could append your ad’s after the Continue Reading Button by editing the lib/content/xxx.php files (for the different post types). Are you working with an Ad service by chance?

For your second question, it’d be an easy enough modification to adjust the header width (if you dont want the widget area to the right, and have a wide banner). It’s simply removing the columns to the right, and extending the logo column set to twelve.

Default-user

We use lijit but I was hoping to be able to place graphic ads on my own between posts. I am not good with HTML or PHP so if adding them will require messing with code, this may not be the right theme for me. But it is gorgeous.

Can a sidebar be added to main theme homepage? Because if I could add a sidebar to that (the main page that comes up first when I hit “live preview”, not the internal pages) and a top banner, I could make it work for me.

Thanks very much for your responsiveness.

ThemeBeans

It’s possible, but it could take a decent amount of work to fit in right with your needs – Acute may not be the right fit for you… though we do have a nice blog theme in the pipeline which features a bold sidebar area throughout the theme. We’re looking to launch it early to mid next week.

Maybe that’ll do the trick! :)

Default-user

Man, if it had the bold style of Acute and a sidebar, that would be the theme for me. thanks.

ThemeBeans

Awesome, follow us on Twitter and you’ll possibly see some screenshots soon :)

We’re just adding in a couple more feature sets and conducting test runs till Tuesday probably – as long as nothing big occurs.

Hello!

Love the theme, it’s really nice. The hidden sidebar doesn’t appear to scroll when the screen height is smaller than the menu size. Is that a bug?

Thanks, Oli

ThemeBeans

Hey Oli, nope, it’s a fixed sidebar – which means you should only place a couple widgets per page. You can create additional widget areas to display them though out your website. Cheers!

ThemeBeans

Literally just figured out a way to do the scrollable sidebar – cracked myself on the head for how easy it actually is…

Simple add “overflow-y:scroll; height:100%;” to ”#panel .holder” in style.css right around line 772.

I’m thinking of making a theme option to turn on / off this functionality in the next update but this will do the trick. Let me know if this is what you’re looking for.

Appreciate your patience!

Thanks. I’ve changed the scroll to ‘auto’ so it’s not there all the time. I’m also going to play with ‘antiscroll’ so it’ll look a bit nicer that way: https://github.com/LearnBoost/antiscroll

Interesting stuff, I’ll look into it as well. Thanks!

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but most header styles are ignored by the theme. Looking into the CSS file, I can see the initial styling here:

h1 { font-size: 37px; } h2 { font-size: 22px; line-height: 30px; } h3 { font-size: 25px; } h4 { font-size: 20px; padding-bottom: 7px; } h5 { font-size: 14px; }

But further down, the style has been overridden:

h1, h2, h3, h4 { color: #22272A; font: bold 38px/40px "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif; }

A fix for this would be to take out the size and line height styling:

h1, h2, h3, h4 { color: #22272A; font-weight:bold; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif; }

Thanks, Oli

ThemeBeans

Ahh nice catch MrNorm. Yup those are just overriding those – most likely a copy/paste error. We’ll touch that up in the next update.

Cheers!

ThemeBeans

Hey Marleen, we’re glad you’re happy with Acute!

You could make it fixed with a couple CSS adjustments to style.css (or use the custom CSS editor in the Theme Options Panel). You would just need to mod the right attribute to output “right: 0px!important” and you’ll probably want to add “height: 100%” – both to the #panel ID on line 756 of style.css.

You should hide the toggle too (or take it out of the code base).

All kinds of lovely. Some questions for you before I take the plunge:

- Sliding sidebar panel – Does turning it “off” keep it displayed on pages (as opposed to sliding in/out, or does it remove it all together? I’d like to have it static on some pages.

- Blog name/logo: In absence of a logo, what would approx position of blog name be when text is entered?

- Header social icons – Is there a screenshot of how they would appear?

- Yoast SEO: I’m currently experiencing an issue where merely having the plugin activated disables date-based archives. No fix yet. Have you encountered that issue?

- Social sharing – To date I have not found a plugin that isn’t clunky and blends nicely. Most have issues. Are there plans to integrate that feature to enable FB/Twitter/G+/Pinterest sharing?

- Social feeds: Is there a sidebar/footer widget for Instagram or Pinterest?

- Some plugins I use and would like to know if you foresee compatibility issues: Disqus, W3 Total Cache.

- Speed: I ran the demo through GTmetrix and the grade is not so optimal. It also points out some elements that seem easily improvable. A big concern and would love your thoughts on that.

- Lastly, having to handle the “Continue Reading” manually every single time I post is a drag. Did I interpret that correctly in documentation?

Thanks in advance!

ThemeBeans

1. Turning off the sliding panel completely removes the panel.

2. Yup, your site title will appear in the logo’s spot if no logo image is uploaded.

3. Unfortunately there are no header icons in Acute. We meant the footer (where there are actually many more).

4. I’m not aware of date based archives being adjusted, what themes are you experiencing this on? We have added a touch up to include Yoast compatibility with v1.0.5 but not for that – if that’s an issue in our themes.

5. Yes we are working on social sharing, though it will probably not be out for another week or two. It’s a planned update that will probably be similar to how our other themes handle them.

6. Page speed through PageSpeed Insights (Google) isn’t bad at all. Scored a 91/100 (Link)

7. We have tested W3 Total Cache, works fine. Have not tested Disqus.

8. There is not a default widget for Instagram or Pinterest but there are lots of good widgets out there. We’re working on those widgets of our own, but they are lower on the totem pole at the moment.

9. To add a continue reading button, you simply click the more button. We did it this way so that you have control over what text is hidden and what’s not. It is the preferred way to do it, via WordPress docs. There’s a small fix to change it to that functionality – I believe we already answered that on either a comment here or a post in our Support Forum.

Cheers!

Appreciate the super quick response here! My comments below…

1. Turning off the sliding panel completely removes the panel.

>> So no way to keep on a chosen page (static)?

5. Yes we are working on social sharing, though it will probably not be out for another week or two. It’s a planned update that will probably be similar to how our other themes handle them.

>> Similar to what you have on Words theme?

6. Page speed through PageSpeed Insights (Google) isn’t bad at all. Scored a 91/100

>> Good to see. Odd that via GTMetrix, Pagespeed is 75 and Yslow 78.

8. There is not a default widget for Instagram or Pinterest but there are lots of good widgets out there. We’re working on those widgets of our own, but they are lower on the totem pole at the moment.

>> Noted. Instagram/Pinterest are equally important to Dribble/Flickr. I’m not a developer but I’ve seen some single widgets that allow any/all social feeds. Prob is they are not built into theme.

>> Perhaps I’m not understanding. Where is the more button you’re referring to? The impression I got is that when I go compose a post, I must enter a shortcode in post editor otherwise the “continue reading” button would not be there—not a step I’ve had to take in the past.

Separately, plans to enable Google web fonts?

Thanks again!

ThemeBeans

1. You could target specific classes via CSS on specific pages, but I think that would be confusing for users who are viewing it fixed/open on some pages, and not on others.

5. Yup, similar fashion. If we can get something using sharrre working then we will probably implement that though.

6. That is interesting.

8. We agree. When we have them completed, they will most likely be standalone widgets (not all integrated into one) so that there’s not unnecessary code throughout. They’re coming soon-ish but we do have a couple other priorities on the list – though we would like these both to be made within our next sprint – 30 days.

9. In the WordPress editor you’ll see a “More” button, that pulls in the code automatically for the button itself. It’s a default WordPress action.

10. Do you mean a font switcher? If so, then probably not. It’s already fairly simple to modify fonts either through the style.css stlyesheet or the custom css editor in the Theme Options. It’s not on the dev list at the moment, though it’s not been nixed either. :)

Google fonts work throughout the theme already – using Source Sans Pro in Acute. ;)

Default-user

1. I see your point.

5. Would be nice as the Words theme ones are enormous and I like subttle.

8. I’ll stay tuned.

9. Got it.

10. I see.. Was not mentioned as “feature” so didn’t know. Most themes promote that front/center. Yes, some field in theme options where you’d plug in Gfont you want. Can’t imagine it’s a good idea to have people messing with code (the uninformed such as myself) for a font change. But we can’t have it all, can we…

Again, thanks for super speedy answers and not minding my gazillion Qs. I’ll stay tuned for those changes/updates.

PS Nice to see you’re in NY ;)

ThemeBeans

5. We’re coming up with a couple ideas – won’t let you down ;)

10. It’s really not a feature anymore – as Google fonts will work throughout the web – you just need to add the @import to the stylesheet to call it in. We’ll see about a font switcher but it’ll get complicated really fast. In my opinion, there hasn’t been an author to do it just right yet – maybe we’ll be the first. ;)

And yes, NYC rocks!

PS: I enjoy answering questions in this fashion. Keeps things easily readable and organized. Cheers!

Default-user

5. 2 cents: an option that provides analytics is ideal.

10. Frankly, I look for theme options that don’t require me to fiddle with code and address my needs with numerous plugins. There’s the issue of theme updates wiping changes and I really want to avoid a child theme solution the next time around. I have to disagree here in that most themes I’ve seen have added discrete sections in theme options panel to allow for inputting preferred Google font. Keep in mind your potential customer is not always a designer, developer, etc. :)

I am in love with the Theme. So Crisp and Clean. Purchased it in a heartbeat. Overall it has been serving me well. Some few nitpicks.

Would love to have more control over what gets places where in the 2 block footers. I.e place in this in the left half, place this in the right.

I also have the same issue as Mr. Norm and this is my biggest issue, the one thing that would make this theme even more epic.

The Sliding Bar needs to be able to scroll on overflow and not cutoff, it is just wayyyy too limiting as it currently stands. It needs an effect similar to Facebook’s Sidebar for Chat/News Ticker. That too is a fixed div that still can scroll independent of the main newsfeed (content) body.

Do you have a solution for this in the works?

Or if anyone has a work around please let me know? -This is important to me for sidebar mainstay widgets like popular & recent posts, a small intro about and archive list.

Overall I really love this theme and would recommend it to anyone. The customization is very intuitive and organized much more than other themes I’ve worked with.

ThemeBeans

I still have to widespread browser test it, but what do you think?

ThemeBeans

And for the footer, are you referring to not having the logo/copyright text in lieu of another widget area?

jksbec
jksbec Purchased

Great that css addition fixed the problem! I should have figured that out 2, but glad it can help other people and will be potentially added to the next update. Works fine on Chrome 26, FF 20.0.1, IE9, just some varying padding issues which is expected. But i’m glad its working, I may look into getting a custom scrollbar to differentiate from the browser default scrollbar.

jksbec

Regarding the footer sometimes certain widgets will mix it with the logo/copyright text. It would be great if they had their own designated buckets and didn’t just inline float each other Something like what themeforest currently has perfectly communicates the right direction/image i’m thinking of.

ThemeBeans

Oh nice. Let us know how it goes. We’re investigation the footer stuffs you mentioned.

First of all: I love this theme! I saw it and immediately purchased it!

However, I have some questions / requests / suggestion / whatever you want to call it:

- I would really appreciate a post format for SoundCloud – will there be one in future updates? I know I could use the embed-code, but in my opinion the standard-embed-look isn’t simple enough. I’d like to have maybe just the file and author name and the waveforms.. something like this.

- I’d also appreciate a “Follow me”-button for SoundCloud

- How can I change the “highlight”-color? In the dark desgin the menu’s or post-title’s highlight-color is cyan-like. I’d like to have it in the bright green, like the “continue reading”-buttons are in

- I’d like to have a “Like”-button, similar to Facebook’s, with a possibility to give a “thumbs up” or to “heart” a post. If you’re not planning to build something like that for a future update, do you know a PRETTY plugin for options like this? Until now I couldn’t find one, that fits my claims. It should be clean and easy, minimalistic

- The List-option doesn’t work correctly, or I’m really dumb – both are possible :D The option does nothing, neither generate a list-icon, yet indent the text or similar like that

- It’s not possible to post multiple images side by side. After an image a paragraph is inserted automatically and then the next one image follows – how can i fix that?

- I’d like to center my chosen header-logo – how do i do that?

- My header-logo is automatically set to the wordpress-log-in-screen, but it’s much too large for this area. Is it possible to manually adjust the displayed size of the log-in-screen-image?

- I’m using the dark Acute design. On one page I’ve added some toggles, but they aren’t directly adjacent to each other, between each one of them exists a small blank line. If I change the design to the light-version it works fine, just like in your theme-demo. Is it possible to understand what I’m talking about?

Pow,.. I’ve nearly written a novel. I guess you’ve already figured out that I’m not really a Wordpress-pro. Nonetheless I hope my questions aren’t too annoying and you’re willing to help me :) are you?

Also please excuse my probably bad english. Greetings from Germany ;)

Hello Rich! I’ve find a few bugs while editing my blog.

- The sliding panel doesn’t work in iPad. I’ve tried to open it in Safari and Chrome, but no success.

- On my iPhone, the post tags and categories don’t appear (on desktop it’s working fine).

- When I insert a photo inside a post which it’s not 760px wide, it’s always left aligned, even when I set it to be centered.

ThemeBeans

Hey, the panel wouldn’t work in iPad because it needs to be “hovered” on to activate it. (Not quite possible just yet).

For the post meta on small screens, we also added a display: none style (in mobile.css – lines 360-365) mostly because it fills up the screen – which is typically already too small – and allows for better consumption of the content itself. You can comment/delete that part out though if you’d like.

I’ll look into the photo thing :)

Cheers!

Awh, well if you’re a bit familiar with column structure coding it wouldnt be too hard to move a sidebar like this page: http://demo.themebeans.com/acute/contact in the blog single views. The blogroll index pages wouldn’t flow too well (with the alternating backgrounds) unless you took those off.
