Thanks for that. I have quite a bit of customising I want to do. I will be in touch if I find any big issues :-)

Widgets dont work 4 me. I set up widgets but they arent saved. :( Can You help me?

IndustrialThemes

I figured out the problem – there was an error in my code and the widgets were not working correctly. I have fixed the problem. You will need to replace three of your theme files with updated ones. If you give me your email address I can send them to you.

Thanks, Brian

Thats good! :) May I know where U corrected the bug? file and row… I don’t want to overwrite my files. Thanks.

IndustrialThemes

There are three files that need to be changed: footer.php, sidebar-right.php, and functions/widgets.php.

1) footer.php (3 changes)

1.1) change line 5 from

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('FooterLeft') ) : else : ?>

to

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('Footer_Left') ) : else : ?>

1.2) change line 33 from

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('FooterMiddle') ) : else : ?>

to

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('Footer_Middle') ) : else : ?>

1.3) change line 61 from

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('FooterRight') ) : else : ?>

to

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('Footer_Right') ) : else : ?>

2) sidebar-right.php (1 change)

2.1) change line 91 from

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('SidebarTop') ) : else : ?>

to

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('Right_Sidebar') ) : else : ?>

3) functions/widgets.php (10 changes)

3.1) change line 4 from

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Sidebar Top',

to

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Right_Sidebar',

3.2) change line 20 from

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer Left',

to

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer_Left',

3.3) change line 28 from

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer Middle',

to

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer_Middle',

3.4) change line 36 from

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer Right',

to

register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Footer_Right',

3.5) remove lines 43 – 50

if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') ) register_sidebar(array('name'=>'404 Sidebar', 'id' => '404', 'before_widget' => '<div class="widget">', 'after_widget' => '</div>', 'before_title' => '<h3>', 'after_title' => '</h3>', ));

3.6) remove line 37

'id' => 'FooterRight',

3.7) remove line 29

'id' => 'FooterMiddle',

3.8) remove line 21

'id' => 'FooterLeft',

3.9) remove lines 11 – 18

if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') ) register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Sidebar Middle (leave blank for Twitter)', 'id' => 'Twitter', 'before_widget' => '<div class="widget">', 'after_widget' => '</div>', 'before_title' => '<h3>', 'after_title' => '</h3>', ));

3.10) remove line 5

'id' => 'SidebarTop',

Please let me know if you run into any problems implementing these changes. Make sure you leave no blank lines in widgets.php. It should be exactly 31 lines long when you are finished making the edits.

Thanks, Brian

it works now! thankYou

IndustrialThemes

Glad it works! Let me know if you have any other problems – I’m here to help.

I was wondering if you could help me create a full width page. I do not see any template pages (Gallery, full width etc).

Thanks

IndustrialThemes

There are a lot of things you would need to change to make this theme full-width, especially since there are some images that are fixed widths.

You would start with line 149 of the style.css page. Try changing that to 95% (100% cuts off some content) and you will see how the site changes. You will have to change the widths of some of the other elements, like the featured area, popular content, post width, footer, etc. All of those changes are in the style.css page and are fairly straight-forward trial and error type changes.

You are likely to have problems with some images, notably the top white rounded image, the shadow image at the top of the featured section, and the bottom grey rounded image below the footer. The layered PNGs are included so you can open those and edit them in an image editor, but if you make the design fluid, you don’t know what width to make them, and they won’t be able to adjust correctly. You would have to re-engineer the way they work (e.g. instead of one long white bar, it’s a top-left image and a top-right image with fluid white background in between), and this takes a bit of HTML /CSS knowledge. If you want a design that is simply wider but not necessarily fluid, that would be easier since you would know exactly how wide you want the theme to be and you can edit the images to that specific width.

While I can’t do these changes for you without charging you my hourly rate, I can at least point you in the direction of how to change them and give you the tools to do so yourself (i.e. provide you with layered PNGs and well-commented code). I am perfectly willing to customize the theme to your liking if you want to hire me.

As always, let me know if you have further specific questions about how to find things in the theme during your customizations.

Thanks, Brian

Sorry, I meant using a template file for pages. I want the side bar there for my posts and on some pages, but I would like to have a few pages that just dont have the sidebar. On other themes you have an option to choose a template from inside wordpress that can be full width.?

I will have a look into it.

Thanks for your reply.

IndustrialThemes

That’s a good idea for an option for my next theme.

For now, here’s how you can accomplish it:

1) Open style.css and add the following code at the very bottom:

#leftpanel_fullwidth { float:left; width:870px; } #leftpanel_fullwidth .excerpt .post-content { width:885px; }

2) Open page.php and change line #13 from

<div id="leftpanel">

to

<div id="leftpanel_fullwidth">

3) In the same file (page.php) change line #36 from

<?php get_sidebar("right"); ?>

to

<?php //get_sidebar("right"); ?>

4) In the same file (page.php) add the following line of code after line #36:

<br class="clearer" />

That should do it. Now all of your pages will be full-width, but the main page, search, categories, single blog posts, etc. will all be the standard two column layout with the sidebar.

Let me know if you have any trouble.

Brian

Again thank you for your help, but I am looking for the page template in wordpress. http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages

See page templates section.

I am looking into it, i dont think I explained myself clearly before. Thanks again for the great help.

IndustrialThemes

In the Wordpress framework, the pages you are referring to are dictated by the “page.php” file. Everything else has a separate file (e.g. individual posts are dictated by “single.php”). If you perform the modifications I explained, all your pages will be full-width. Is that not what you meant?

godonholiday

No its not sorry, I just wanted to have selected pages be full width.

Great theme!

Couple of questions.

  1. Does the navigation support 2/3 levels?
  2. Can the popular area be replaced with random posts?
  3. Can it manage a separate sidebar for home and the rest?

Thanks

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for the compliment!

In regards to your questions, Caulk can’t actually do any of the three things you mention out-of-the-box at this time, unfortunately. Each element would require some changes in the actual code.

I will definitely keep those ideas in mind for my next theme.

Hi Brian, I’d suggest you put the widget bug fix for ribosrl into the theme, so that past purchasers can download the fixed version, novices like myself usually mess things up when we start editing code. Thanks, Vance

IndustrialThemes

That’s the first thing I did. The files should be updated as of yesterday, so anyone downloading the theme from now on has the widget fixes. If you have re-downloaded the theme today and still have the widget problem, please let me know as this is a concern.

Thanks for the heads up.

I am using your theme to develop a client’s website. A couple days ago I ran into an issue with the sidebar issues identified above. However, the issue appeared only after I registered a new sidebar. Yesterday I pulled down the entire site, installed a fresh copy of MYSQL and WordPress then loaded your latest version of the theme.

However, last night I ran into the same issue when I added a new Sidebar using the “Sidebar Registration” plugin. When I try to add any widgets to any of the Footer Sidebars it will not recognize them at all. Then, when I add a new Widget to the Right_Sidebar it does not save it.

The odd thing is when I load a different theme everything works great. I am running WP2 .9 and would love to identify where the issue exists so I can add additional sidebars manually and retain the “widget ready” capabilities.

Thank you, Warren

IndustrialThemes

Warren,

I’m downloading Caulk from ThemeForest and doing a fresh install to verify the correct files are on the site. Give me a few minutes to test this and I’ll get right back with you.

Brian

IndustrialThemes

I just downloaded a fresh copy of Caulk from ThemeForest and uploaded it to a blog running Wordpress 2.9. I was able to add widgets to all 4 sidebar areas without any problems. Maybe you got the old files somehow when you re-downloaded Caulk? Here’s a test: open up functions/widgets.php and tell me how many lines of code there are.

wtalbot Purchased

Hi Brian, Thank you so much for the FAST response. That is amazing.

I agree that initially it was working great. However, the challenge I am having is that once I add a new Sidebar (I am incorporating different sidebars for different pages) there seems to be code that is causing the problem and seems to reset all the widgets and then make the existing Sidebars no longer widget friendly.

I would love to extend the theme to allow my clients to add different sidebars later, but currently this is not functioning at all.

Thank you, Warren

IndustrialThemes

Are you using a plugin, and if so can you post the URL so I can test it out with Caulk?

wtalbot Purchased

Initially I added the sidebar manually by updating the code directly using your updates identified earlier and then adding additional sidebars as well and ran into the issue the first time.

The second and most current issue was when I used the Sidebar Generator plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sidebar-generator/).

Warren

wtalbot Purchased

Is it possible that the following code (lines 463-468) of the theme_options.php file is causing havoc here?

} else if ( 'reset_widgets' == $_REQUEST['action'] ) {
    $null = null;
    update_option('sidebars_widgets',$null);
    header("Location: themes.php?page=theme-options.php&reset=true");
    die;
}

How can I eliminate the functionality within the theme to work around this issue?

Thank you, Warren

IndustrialThemes

Warren,

That’s great! Please do follow up with me on which plugin is causing the conflict so I know for future reference – I would appreciate that.

One thing you might find useful: I noticed that the sidebar generator plugin you are using has a little bit of markup that doesn’t jive with Caulk. I would recommend making the following code change to the sidebar_generator.php file in your plugins/sidebar-generator folder:

Change lines #62-#65 from:

'before_widget' => '<li id="%1$s" class="widget scg_widget '.$sidebar_class.' %2$s">', 'after_widget' => '</li>', 'before_title' => '<h2 class="widgettitle scg_title">', 'after_title' => '</h2>',

to:

'before_widget' => '<div id="%1$s" class="widget scg_widget '.$sidebar_class.' %2$s">', 'after_widget' => '</div>', 'before_title' => '<h3 class="widgettitle scg_title">', 'after_title' => '</h3>',

Now the sidebar header will show up in the correct format with white text on a grey rounded background, and you won’t get the list-item bullet point in front of the title. Of course you don’t have to do this, I just thought I’d tell you how to change it to match the rest of Caulk’s style. Let me know if you have any trouble implementing this change. I tested it and it works fine for me.

Thanks for the kind words, and happy new year to you as well.

Hi Brian, After much testing it turns out the conflict seems to be the “WP Events Calendar” plugin. Not sure where the issue lies but this seems to have created the problem. It is too bad as I love this calendar, but like the theme even more!

Have a great day.

Good to know – thanks for the update!

great theme. if you had a theme color similar to the site below, it would be a purchase!

http://themeforest.net/item/purpleblack-wordpress-template/76202

IndustrialThemes

Thanks!

I’ve included all of the background images in layered PNG form, so you can open them up and edit them and easily change them to any color you like.

Alternatively, if you buy the theme, I will create a color scheme based on the site you linked to for an extra $10.

Hello,

1. I just bought this theme today but the problem is at my front page. It didn’t show the sidebar and footer.

If I open my post than the sidebar and footer appear.

Can u tell me where I am doing wrong.

2. I still don’t understand the “sticky” and “featured” post. I have put a “sticky” tags in one of my old post but it didn’t show at sticky area.

Any idea?

3. Can I edit / remove archives, links, categories at the footer section?

btw .. my blog url: http://kbsoccernet.com

IndustrialThemes

Hi,

I am out of town for the holidays and will look at this when I get back tomorrow and respond. Thanks for the purchase!

Brian

IndustrialThemes

Hi,

Thanks for the purchase!

1) When you say the footer and sidebar don’t appear, do you mean you don’t see anything at all in the footer/sidebar, or you just don’t see content (i.e. do you see the copyright section in the footer? do you see the latest tweets, or advertising panels, or recent comments in the sidebar?) Are you getting any error messages in the footer or sidebar? What version of Wordpress are you using? Have you tried deactivating your plugins to see if they are interfering with the theme? I am not sure why your front page isn’t working correctly…

2) I suggest opening the help.txt file in the main Caulk folder. It will explain how to get sticky and featured posts and other types of posts to display. You need to actually mark a post sticky using the checkbox in the quick edit view – it won’t work if you simply add a tag called “sticky”. Features posts just need a tag named “featured”.

3) Yes, you can edit the footer sections. You need to add widgets to the footer sidebars on the widget page in order to override the default archives/categories/links sections.

Please get back to me with more info so we can troubleshoot your problems further.

Thanks, Brian

Hi Brain,

This is really a great theme. I have purchased it.

How do I make the sitemap work?

http://www.webdesignmo.com/blog/sitemap/

IndustrialThemes

Hi,

Thanks for the purchase and kind remarks!

How are you trying to build your sitemap? Are you using a plugin? Caulk doesn’t come with a built-in sitemap page or functionality.

Thanks, Brian

Hi Brain,

Everything is working correctly now. There are a few things I wanted to let you know.

1. In my old theme, there was a sitemap basically just a list of links to all pages. Now in Caulk, my friend has recommended me to use a plugin “Google XML Sitemaps” and I am using it now.

2. When I activate Caulk theme, I had a problem of showing broken images. I figured out that it was about ‘cache’ folder permission problem by timthumb.php file but I still did not know where to create ‘cache’ folder. Finally, another friend helped me created it ”/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/Caulk/timthumb/cache” and set CHMOD 777 and resolved.

3. When I enabled ‘advertising panel A’ 4 slots and put 2 banners, there is broken images shown in another 2 slots. Actually, it should not show up broken images Advertisement for empty slots. I am sure this can be easily fixed in PHP . :)

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for letting me know about those issues. That will help me as I develop my next theme because I will probably use the same elements and plugins.

You are also correct about the advertising panels. I should probably make it so that if only two images are used instead of four, that the bottom two images don’t show up at all.

Thanks for the valuable feedback! Please let me know if you come across any other issues.

Firstly, thanks for this nice theme. I have a Turkish blog and i need psd files for some images. for examp.. categories, archives, recent comments and all of like this things. It’s so important for me. Thanks

IndustrialThemes

Yes, I have included the layered PNG files for you to edit. They are all in the images folder. For instance, the theme uses “categories.jpg” for the image in the footer. Open “categories.png” in a graphics editor and modify it. Then save/export it as jpg and replace the orginal image. You can open PNGs in lots of graphics editors, including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks.

Please let me know if you are successful or you need more help.

Thanks for the purchase!

Brian

What font do you use to “fetured, popular, etc.” ? I want to translate it to my language and I want to use the same font.

That is Titillium. You can download it here: http://www.campivisivi.net/titillium/

Hi Brain, Have you determined how you could leverage the new WP 2 .9 thumbnail feature to show thumbnail images for posts? I am building a site for a client where their users will create their own posts and want to provide a simple way for them to add images that will show us on all excerpts.

Have you looked into this yet?

Thank you.

IndustrialThemes

Warren,

I have not yet had a chance to look into this. I know that 2.9 has a thumbnail feature, but I’m not sure how it integrates with Caulk. I will let you know when I have looked into this.

Thanks, Brian

bizbuzz Purchased

Awesome theme, I just purchased earlier tonight. Really impressed!

I am having a problem with the thumbnail feature for some reason though. At first I thought I may be having a problem with a conflicting plug-in, so I deactivated all plug-ins to no avail.

What’s happening is that instead of showing the thumbnail image, it is instead showing the permalink address… really weird behavior.

I have tried putting in the image path in every way I can think of, but I get the same behavior. You can see what it looks like here:

http://www.ericmathieu.com

Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for the purchase!

That is interesting – I took a look at your blog and saw what you were talking about. I downloaded a fresh copy of Caulk from ThemeForest and installed it on a fresh install of Wordpress to make sure the files are working OK. I was able to see thumbnails successfully, so it’s not the theme files, it must be something else with the installation. There is a folder in the theme files called “timthumb” which handles the image resizing, and it appears it is not able to resize the images. What version of Wordpress are you using? Are you sure you completely disabled all the other plugins and tried it that way?

Thanks, Brian

IndustrialThemes

One thing to look for: inside the timthumb folder on the server, see if there is a folder called “cache” with files in it. That folder gets created when timthumb resizes the images, and if for some reason it can’t access that folder it would not work…
