I actually completely blew away the WP install last night (was running 2.9) and installed version 2.8.6 (with no plugins other than Akismet) with the same result. I then upgraded it to 2.9 just to see, and same thing. I’ve gone through and done a CHMOD on the cache folder and the files to 777, but that didn’t work either.

Not a big deal, as I am just starting the blog up again, so I am actually going to blow away the entire domain from my server and set it all up again and see if there is some strange remnant from the previous site that is causing it to do something strange.

I’ll post the results once I have done this, but I expect it to work fine once I do that.

Thanks for the quick response!

I hope it works for you. I”m going to be out of town this weekend, but occasionally checking email and such, so if you reply this weekend I might not be able to get to it until next week. Good luck.

It worked! I have no idea what could have been wrong, but I guess there were some gremlins still left over. Everything is good now.

Thanks again!

Brian,

I just bought the Caulk theme last night and I really like it. I have started customizing and building my new site, but I was curious about something.

A lot of the themes you can buy with timthumb script now have code that scan the blog entry for an image and automatically load the first image thumbnail, rather than requiring the use of custom fields. Themes such as Arthemia, Elegant Themes, Mimbo Pro, etc all use this method.

Is there any way I can alter the theme to do this? I’m not a PHP guy so don’t know the proper code to write or where I would put it.

Thanks, Shawn

IndustrialThemes

Hi Shawn,

I have seen that capability in other blogs but decided not to build it into this version of Caulk. I will look into it and see what it would take to get that feature added. I am currently out of town and will be back Monday, so I will look into it then.

Thanks for the purchase!

I found the code that needs to be done, but I can’t figure out how to plug it in without messing up your code. Here’s the post on how to do it…

http://www.problogdesign.com/wordpress/automatic-wordpress-thumbnail-without-custom-field/

Any way we could get you to update your theme for this?

Thanks, Shawn

IndustrialThemes

Shawn,

Great, you did a little of the work for me. I will refer to your link and do a little research of my own, and consider either giving you the updated code or updating the theme itself. I”ll get with you at the beginning of next week.

Thanks,

Brian

IndustrialThemes

Shawn,

I have looked into this a bit and done some research. It looks like it is going to take a little work on my part and involve changing some code in 7+ files. It’s definitely possible to do, but since it will require some work on my part and it’s not an error with Caulk, it falls into my billable hours category. My hourly rate is $50 and this will probably take about an hour to fully implement and test. For billable work done for Caulk customers I deduct the amount of the theme purchase from the total, so you’re looking at around $25 (an hour of work minus the cost of the theme). Is this something you want to pursue? I have a general turnaround time of 24-48 hours and I accept PayPal payments.

Either way, I’m glad you pointed this out because it is definitely something I will build into my next theme.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Great theme! It is just what I was looking for when I needed to re-vamp my site. So far, besides the one question I have, everything is working brilliantly.

I am trying to add a Lightbox/Shadowbox/Fancybox/Floatbox/jQuery image viewer to my site for individual images (not a gallery) on my posts. The code shows up correctly from the plugins (I’ve tried about 10 today), but the image still links to the original image file, and none of the image effects have ever worked correctly. Because this has happened with most of the image plugins I’ve tried, I think it might be something in your theme?

Here’s a link to a post: http://euphonywho.com/food/forays-into-panini/

The plugin is called Floatbox

Can you take a quick look and see if you have figure out what the problem would be? Thanks for your help!

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for the compliment and purchase!

I am currently out of town and will return in a few days. I’ll take a look at this and see if I can figure out the problem. I”ll try installing the plugin you referred to and maybe a couple other ones and see if I can get any of them to work.

Take care,

Brian

IndustrialThemes

I looked into this and was not able to fix it. I installed the plugin on a fresh install and it didn’t work. It is probably due to a jsvascript incompatibility with Caulk and this plugin. In order to further troubleshoot this issue, I would need to do some testing with the javascript and theme files in Caulk. Since this is an error involving a third party plugin and not the core Wordpress framework it would fall into the category of billable hours. Please let me know if this is something you would be interesting in pursuing.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for checking. I’m a little concerned, because it wasn’t just this one image plugin, it was all the ones I tried. I’ll take another look, deactivate all my other plugins, and keep trying.

If you check my site, a plugin I installed for a dropdown archive list (in the left footer widget area), also doesn’t work correctly. I’ve re-copied the theme files over, but can try recopying wordpress over again.

If the Javascript clash is happening with most the image plugins available, that seems like the issue would be with the theme Javascript. Can you recommend a Lightbox-esque image plugin that you’ve used with this theme before? Thanks!

-Thomas

IndustrialThemes

Thomas,

This is a little concerning, and yes it is because of a javascript issue within the Caulk theme. Can you list a few of the other plugins you’ve tried, such as the dropdown one you tried in the footer? I may be able to tell you which javascript code to disable to get the plugins to work with minimal impact on the existing functionality of the theme. I didn’t realize it was affecting other types of plugins you’ve used.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you about this. I tried a few more plugins tonight, and none seem to be working correctly. I’ve reinstalled the theme as well, just to double-check I didn’t tweak something incorrectly. Here are some I’ve tried today:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/highslide-4-wordpress-reloaded/ http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/lightbox-2/ http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/fancybox-gallery/

these did not work, but this one did:

http://www.viper007bond.com/wordpress-plugins/jquery-lightbox-for-native-galleries/

So there’s no immediate need to check this, as I’ve got one that’s working okay for me. Thanks again for the theme!

Interesting. I will look into this when I can and try to determine what is causing the error. It’s good that you have provided me with both a working and non-working plugin so I can test them both and compare. Glad you got something working at least!

Bought the theme today. It’s fantastic.

I have a couple of questions, though, and I apologize in advance if they’ve already been answered. I only glanced over the previous comments.

1) How do you get rid of the calendar and meta in the sidebar.

2) I’ll be using this template for a website that won’t have comments. Therefore, showing “popular” posts isn’t feasible. Could you provide me with the code changes necessary to be able to hand select which posts I want to display in this area, similar to the featured or sticky options? Also, what about code changes to remove the dates from the sides of the posts.

I’ll happily pay for the customization if necessary.

Thanks! Great theme!

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for the purchase and the kind words!

1) You can disable the calendar and meta section one of two ways a) add your own widgets to the right sidebar b) go to the Caulk theme options page and deselect “show sidebar widgets”

2) These are customizations that I can perform for you at our regular hourly rate. Our policy is to knock off the cost of the theme from the total. Removing the date should be pretty simple. Changing the popular section depends on what you want to display there. Would you want to use a special tag like “popular” for posts to display there? These changes shouldn’t take more than 1-2 hours. Once you respond with exactly what you want I can give you a close estimate.

Thanks, Brian

Thanks for the quick response!

Yes, after I wrote this last night, I made the changes to the page and post to remove the calendar date.

And yes, I’d like a special tag similar to the one used for the featured posts so I can control what’s in the “popular” section.

Please let me know what would be the apprx. cost and we’ll go from there.

Again, great theme and even greater customer service!

IndustrialThemes

Thanks again!

Looks like to make these changes it will take approx 1.5 hours. Our rate is $50 per hour, so subtracting the cost of the theme puts us at a total of $50 (1.5×50 = 75 – 25 = 50). We can send you a money request on PayPal if you want to proceed, and then have the updates to you by tomorrow.

Hi Brian

Thanks for the wonderful theme design.I have installed the theme successfully but facing some problems.I just bought the site and playing with it.

1.My featured posts are not showing up – I have created custom field and also given a tag” featured”.

2.My Popular posts are showing up but the text is coming below the image file.

3.My Random posts are showing up but some times images are covering entire width and the text is hiding. What is the exact image size advisable in the post area?

My subject site is http://www.gadgetspire.com

Can you help me? If you want, I can email the login details.

IndustrialThemes

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the purchase and kind words!

1. Are you sure the featured posts are not also marked Sticky? If so, they won’t display in the featured area.

2. & 3. These both deal with the timthumb function that auto-resizes images into the correct size thumbnail. It seems like this is not working for some reason. I have not had anyone else come across this issue. Did you tamper with any of the code in the theme at all?

Thanks,

Brian

  • Has been a member for 4-5 years

I am attempting to use the theme, but am having trouble with the thumbnails displaying as well. I have uploaded… deleted, reinstalled both wordpress and the theme multiple times…...

I have also changed the permissions on the CACHE folder to 777….what I do notice is that when the thumbnail files are created there permissions are changed even though I changed the permission for aLL FILES AND SUBFOLDERS …..when I try to change the permission on the actual files created in the cache folder it does not allow me to!.....

Is there anything I can do to rectify this? thanks.

IndustrialThemes

What version of PHP is installed on your server?

Also, do files appear in the cache folder inside the timthumb folder at all? They will have long, encrypted, filenames…

Brian:

Thanks again for the quick turnaround on the customizations.

I have a few more bugs I’d like to be able to work out.

1) What can be done to determine which posts show below the “popular” slider. It’s for recent posts but I’d to be able to choose which posts to go there. It will be used for announcements, etc.

2) What can be done to make the twitter widget display on the home page only.

Let me know.

IndustrialThemes

How comfortable are you with editing HTML and/or PHP code? I could probably explain to you step by step how to disable Twitter from showing up on other pages if you’d like. Otherwise I could perform the change for you (would probably take 20 minutes or so).

The issue involving the recent posts area could be a little more sophisticated. Would you want posts with a specific tag to show up there or were you thinking something else?

Default-user
amurph22 Purchased

If you send me an email with the changes I need to make for the twitter feed, I’ll try it myself.

I’d probably need you to customize the posts for me. I’d like to be able to specify a post category for the ones I’d like to show up on the home page, i.e. Announcements category. And if no posts are selected, then I’d like the footer to show up below the popular slider.

Let me know how much this would cost.

Thanks.

Brian:

Since my last reply, I found a solution to choosing which posts show on the home page below the popular slider.

In the index.php file, I changed:

<?php query_posts($args); // get all posts excluding the ones displayed above ?>

to

<?php query_posts(‘category_name=announcements’); // get all posts excluding the ones displayed above ?>

That way it only shows posts from the announcements category or whatever categories are listed there.

I’m still looking for a fix to show the twitter widget on the home page only.

Also, I think I’m having the same problem that ribosrl posted about a couple of weeks ago. The right sidebar isn’t displaying widgets. I’ve tested it using several different widgets but still only the calendar and meta widgets display. What should I do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

IndustrialThemes

Glad you got the announcements function working – good job.

The Twitter only on the home page fix is this: open sidebar-right.php and change line #68 from

<?php if ( $clk_show_tweets==0 ) { ?>

to

<?php if ( $clk_show_tweets==0 && is_front_page() ) { ?>

That will make it so Latest Tweets only shows on the homepage.

As for the sidebar widgets not working, are you sure you have the correct setting in the Caulk theme options page? Make sure you have “yes” selected for “show sidebar widgets”. If you have this set correctly and you have widgets added to the Right_Sidebar sidebar in the widgets admin panel, then I’m not sure why it’s not working. What version of Wordpress do you have installed? Are the widgets not saving correctly in the widgets admin panel, or are they just not showing up in the theme?

Thanks,

Brian

Default-user
amurph22 Purchased

The change you suggested makes the Latest Tweets widget disappear completely from the sidebar in every page.

In reference to the sidebar, the widgets appear to be saving correctly in the widgets admin panel, but not on the website. And I do have “yes” selected in the theme options. The only thing showing up is the calendar and meta.

I have 2.9 installed.

IndustrialThemes

Interesting, that code change seemed fine when I tested it. Maybe you have your blog set up in a slightly different manner. Locate that line of code I had you change and try this: instead of “is_front_page()” use “is_home()” and see if that makes a difference.

In regard to your sidebar widget problem… there was a problem with the widgets on the first version of Caulk that I uploaded, and was subsequently fixed in a more recent upload. When did you download the Caulk files that you are using now?

Default-user
amurph22 Purchased

Ok. So I just did a complete new install of the customized theme that you send me the other day to make sure that none of my changes were causing the sidebar widgets not to show up.

They are still now showing up.

When you customized the popular slider for me, is there something that you might have changed inadvertently to cause the sidebar widgets not to work? Or could you have forgotten not to include the updates in the customized theme you sent me?

IndustrialThemes

It is quite possible that I sent you an older version of the files before the last round of updates. I will install the exact files I sent you and see if I can replicate the errors. I will do this first thing tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

Brian

Default-user

Ok. Sorry to keep bothering you.

After my last message I deleted the theme with my FTP and reinstalled a version downloaded from the themeforest website today and updated the individual files one by one to see if any one of them was effecting the twitter widget.

The sidebar still isn’t working, but I figured out that my change to only show announcements posts on the front page is causing the twitter widget to disappear.

So don’t waste your time trying to figure the twitter widget out, unless you can think of an easy way to fix this.

I’d really just like the sidebar widgets to work.

Thanks again.

IndustrialThemes

This is completely my mistake. I accidentally included a code change I did for someone else in the updated code I sent you. To fix it, open up sidebar-right.php and change line #91 from

<?php if ( function_exists('generated_dynamic_sidebar') && generated_dynamic_sidebar('Right_Sidebar') ) : else : ?>

to

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && dynamic_sidebar('Right_Sidebar') ) : else : ?>

That should fix your sidebars. You should still be able to do the “is_front_page()” or “is_home()” (whichever was working for you) for the Latest Tweets.

If you want me to troubleshoot getting the announcements to display on the home page, I can look into this for you and a get you a modification that works with the rest of the theme.

Let me know if these changes work for you. Thanks,

Brian

I think I may have made a dreadful mistake.

I just purchased caulk.

1. I never use thumbs on posts- is there a way to disable this function? It doesn’t seem to work anyway but I wouldn’t enjoy going back through dozens of page rethumbing. 2.How do I get rid of the popular posts bar and the calendar. 3. I have no sidebar widgets even though I turned it on but there seems to be something wrong – it’s like the widgets have twisted around and turned up at the bottom of the page. I looked in the footer widgets and I can’t find them to remove. Anything I can do? The bottom of the page looks awful. I tried deleting the footer page in the editor – and the calendar from the sidebar -but that doesn’t really help 4. Quite frustrated

IndustrialThemes

Hi, and thanks for the purchase!

I just downloaded a fresh copy of Caulk from ThemeForest and uploaded it to my server and everything appears to be working correctly. Maybe there was an error in your uploading process? You could try re-downloading and uploading a fresh copy and see if that does the trick.

Also, this could be a problem with your server. Sometimes that has happened to me in the past and it has fixed itself, however it appears your page has been doing this for at least 10 hours, so I’m not sure what the cause is. Did you modify any of the HTML code since you purchased it?

I have deactivated all the plugins and still having problems of featured posts, random posts and popular posts. How to check the post is sticky or not? What is the best size of image to be uploaded.I have different size images and I think this is the reason for problem in Random posts.

IndustrialThemes

You can check if a post is sticky by clicking on the Edit menu item under Posts, and then hovering over a post and clicking Quick Edit. Then you will see a checkbox to the right. Click it to make the post sticky.

Maybe the TimThumb script needs to run on your old posts. Open up one of the posts with a screwed-up thumbnail and try either re-saving it, or re-uploading the thumbnail. Then see if it displays correctly. If you want, you can give me credentials to login to your blog and I can take a look. Either way.

Any suggestions on changing the font.

I’ve tried changing the Stylesheet several times, even going so far as to have Arial as the only option and still Georgia or TNR or Times, one of the more ornate fonts, keeps showing showing.

Thanks.

IndustrialThemes

Are you talking about the logo, post headers, or something else?

Default-user
amurph22 Purchased

Post headers and page headers I guess:

h1, h2, h3 under standard tags.

title under top menu.

featured_right ul li a.posttitle under featured content.

strapline .popular ul li a under strapline content

main .excerpt .datewrapper under excerpt

I’ve replaced them all with the fonts that I’d like (Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Sans-Serif) and still I think Georgia is displaying.

I could be messing something up. So If you’d like to make me a custom stylesheet using the above fonts, I’d be happy to pay you for it. And then after installing that, I could see if it was the stylesheet that’s the problem or something else.

IndustrialThemes

Sure, I’ll get you a custom stylesheet with the specific fonts you want. To be clear, you’re not referring to the “featured article”, “popular”, or “recently added” text headers are you? You’re simply referring to post & page headers, and h1, h2, & h3 in the articles? What about the post titles in the popular posts panel? Also, I can’t remember if you are using a custom image for your logo or plain text. If it’s plain text, do you want to change the font of the logo and subtitle? One more thing – what about the dates to the left of the posts? The day and month are both Georgia font as well.

If it’s easier, you can just list each font you want changed in a list and then I’ll come back at you with a price…

Default-user
amurph22 Purchased

I was referring to the headers in the featured, sticky, and events, as well as for posts on the front page and single posts and pages.

Whatever the font is set for the excerpt under the featured posts can remain the same as well as the excerpts for posts on the front page and the body on single posts and pages.

The font family I’d like are (Helvetica, Arial, Sans-serif) in that order.

The dates to the left of the posts shouldn’t be an issue b/c you removed those during the prior customization. So if that code needs to be taken out of the stylesheet, you can do that.

IndustrialThemes

Ah yes, I forgot you were the one I removed those for. It’s all starting to blur together :)

How does $10 sound for those customizations? That includes me making all the font changes you specified as well as testing them.

Great theme, and a worthy purchase.

Would be good to add a drop down in the menu for sub pages. Unless it’s already there, and I’m being stupid.

IndustrialThemes

Unfortunately that feature does not exist in this version of Caulk. It’s something that I am going to build into my next theme, and it’s also something I can do as a custom job for specific requests if it is important for you to have this feature.

Thanks for the purchase!

Brian

It’s not a deal breaker, but would be a nice to have. I see very few WP themes that have a sub-page menu drop down, not sure why that is tho.

IndustrialThemes

Yeah, that is weird. It’s actually not that hard to do and I have done it on previous themes. There were a few specific stylistic qualities with the way Caulk is structured that made it a little more difficult than usual to do, so I just opted not to include it. It was really just laziness on my part. I am surprised that a lot of other themes don’t have them either… shame on us!

Here’s another question: were you talking about drop downs for the pages across the top, or for the categories across the top under the pages? Just curious…

Default-user
sfcooper Purchased

It was for the page links at the very top.

Also, separate issue, it doesn’t appear that the subscribe feeds via RSS or email appear to work. Is there a setting hidden away somewhere for this?

IndustrialThemes

Great theme; I’m setting it up on my website, http://www.englishculturecommunity.com

I changed the background though and can’t get it to repeat (repeat, repeat-xy, etc doesn’t work.)

IndustrialThemes

Thanks for the purchase and kind words!

The site is looking good – nice background. If you want the background to repeat, you will actually need to open up either the background-dark.css file or the background-light.css file inside the style/ folder (depending on whether you have “dark” or “light” selected for your background color). Then, change it from “repeat-x” to just “repeat”. Editing the page background in the regular style.css file doesn’t work because it gets overwritten by the stylesheets in the style/ folder.

Lightboxes solution?

Not being able to use any lightboxes or image viewer with this theme is a big problem; those plugins are pretty standard with wordpress. I tried the one mentioned above but I couldn’t get it to work either:

(jquery-lightbox-for-native-galleries).

Is there a workaround?

IndustrialThemes

Unfortunately I haven’t found a workaround for this yet. Some of the javascript is interfering with the lightbox plugins and I have been looking into this for some time. I’m sorry that you’re having trouble with this feature and I understand that it can be frustrating. You are indeed the second or third person to mention this problem…

I will let you know when I have found a workaround.

IndustrialThemes

One more thing: I noticed that you have enough pages so that the page menu at the top wraps to a second line… do you need any help resolving this, or is it ok how it is?
