Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pagination for my reviews and/or category pages results in 404 errors when I move to the next page.

This is because you have a page with the same slug as a custom post type or category, which will will result in 404 errors for some of the permalink structures. For instance, you can’t have a page with a slug of product-reviews because the slug of the custom post type for product reviews already uses it. Add “-2” to the end of the page slug, so it becomes product-reviews-2, or something like that.

My posts don’t sort by date. Instead, it appears they are randomly sorted.

Make sure you don’t have any posts marked sticky.

My pagination for my category archive pages result in 404 pages when I move to the last page (or other subsequent pages).

You need to make sure your category archive posts per page is set to the same number as your blog settings pages number. Go to Continuum Theme Options >> Page Layouts >> Category Archive Pages >> Posts Per Page and make sure that number is the same as Reading >> Blog pages show at most.

In Firefox, the spotlight slider formatting is screwed up.

Do you only have one post marked “spotlight”? Try adding another one and see if that fixes it.

My post thumbnails are not cropped and sized correctly.

You need to install and run the AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild plugin in order to rebuild all your thumbnails to fit into Continuum. This is only necessary if you have uploaded image thumbnails (featured images) before installing Continuum.

Help, my small menu disappeared when I upgraded to version 1.1!

That’s because a new theme option was added that lets you hide this menu, and by default it’s turned off, so you need to go into Continuum Theme Options >> Miscellaneous and turn the custom small menu back on. You won’t lose any of your menu items, don’t worry.

I put a text widget in my sidebar and all the sudden my footer is aligning to the left.

Continuum doesn’t allow text widgets to be added to the sidebar that don’t have titles. Put something in for the title of the widget (use a period or dash if you want it to work but the header to not be noticeable). Or, use the Continuum Unwrapped Text widget, which does not require a header and also does not wrap the content in a sidebar container (this is great for tall ads).

When I activate the Formidable plugin (or another plugin), my Movie Reviews post type disappears.

The menu order is being duplicated. Open functions/post-types.php and edit line 37. Change the number of the menu position from 25 to 30.

Why do some of my thumbnails not fit into their containers and have black space on the right or underneath, or are stretched and sized weirdly?

Continuum automatically resizes and crops your images into several different sizes so that there will be an appropriately sized image to fit all of the various thumbnail areas. After installing Continuum, any image you upload will be appropriately sized into all the various sizes. However, if you are installing Continuum onto an existing WordPress installation with images previously uploaded, the correct sizes for your images will not exist to suit Continuum. Not to worry, there is a plugin that you can install that will fix all of your previously uploaded images. Install the AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild plugin, located here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ajax-thumbnail-rebuild/. Once you install it, run the plugin and it will automatically resize all of your images. If you have a large amount of images, just let it run until it’s finished as it may take some time to complete.

On my front page, page 1 shows more posts than pages 2, 3, etc.

Make sure you don’t have any posts marked sticky.

My random post button is displayed twice instead of once.

Make sure you don’t have any posts marked Sticky.

How can I populate my blog with dummy content from your demo?

Download, unzip, and import this xml file into your Wordpress installation. To import, go to Tools >> Import and select Wordpress. This will import all posts, pages, and comments into your blog. It will not import the actual images from the dummy content, and it will also not import the settings from the demo.

How do I translate the PO file that came with this theme and apply it to my theme?

I merely provide a translation-ready PO file with this theme that you can then take and translate using software such as Poedit (http://www.poedit.net/). I have not translated a Wordpress theme myself, nor do I really know how to translate one, so I am not the best resource to help you with this specific task. I do know that the PO file I provide works, because hundreds of customers have successfully used it to translate their themes. To get much better information than what I can provide you, start with this resource: http://codex.wordpress.org/Translating_WordPress, and then ask any specific questions on Wordpress Answers: http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/, or the Wordpress support forums: http://wordpress.org/support/.

How can I get support for Continuum?

Can I rename, change, or add new review types other than the 5 build-in review types?

In order to change or add a new review type, you would need to modify the theme code in several different places, as well as rename/add some theme files. There are hundreds of places in the code that would need to be changed for a new review type. This is a fairly involved process, and you need to have an understanding of Wordpress 3.0 custom post types as well as PHP . Please check this support forum topic for further information regarding hiring a developer to perform these changes for you: http://support.industrialthemes.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=144&sid=84f495044fc9fc07a646db782ac6a810

I use Disqus and I can’t get the “comments” text to display appropriately in all places of my site.

How do I get SEO Facebook Comments to work with my site?

I can’t click any links in the post content of my very first post!

Delete this post and create a new one. The very first post in WordPress with ID of 1 has trouble with links. Not sure if this is a WordPress thing, a Continuum thing, or both. In any case, it should only affect the very first post you have in your system, and never affect anything else again.
