Hi, nice theme, but…

What makes WP great is that you can have people collaborating with you who do not know any HTML . Taking that into consideration you really need to improve the shortcode generator which should include all the TABs, Toggles, Quotes, etc, etc… mine at least only has the Videos (ver. 1.8.1)

Also, instead of having a section at the bottom of the editor page you should have a shortcodes toolbar right under the normal editor toolbar, like many themes have.

Finally a serious issue is that you cannot use SHORTCODES inside TABBED content… and that is just plain silly. I want tabs to add loads of content without going scroll crazy. That should include, foto galleries, video embeds and all styling options.

Can you address these issues?

Regards, JJ

Thank you :)

1) Better shortcode generator is on the way. V1.9 and v2.0 will contain improvements to many areas and will make back-end interface more user-friendly. For now functionality is our priority. You can create all those shortcodes with a little help of documentation and they will work, so it’s 90% of success.

2) We had it in the toolbar and there’s even module for that included (but it’s disabled). We decided to move it to meta box instead because then its layout is far more convenient on mobile devices and tablets. Again – functionality is our priority. It’s done the correct way in my opinion.

3) I think that in this event you shouldn’t use tabs and you should re-define your front-end presentation plan. Nesting more information than just a couple of sentences in TAB shortcode isn’t recommended because it makes website look inconsistent, crowded, counter-intuitive. Please note that WordPress does not allow nested shortcodes for performance reasons. It’s just disabled in every single theme by default (unless author decided to change default WordPress behavior). However, I’ll take this into consideration.

To conclude – I understand that aesthetic look of all those elements and user-friendly interfaces are important but they are also of least priority to developer compared to actual functionality, number of shortcodes etc. It’s better if we added 5 new shortcodes than moved shortcode generator to toolbar.

But I’ve got some good news – we’re preparing v1.9 and v2.0 and both should introduce nice improvements to various areas :)

Fair enough, but … 1.) Regarding Shortcodes, they are ALWAYS usable via HTML but having a generator for them is essencial Having non tech people colaborating and adding content must stay clear of HTML . 2.) Regarding the toolbar you are right. I ask you then to add the remaining codes to the generator. 3.) Valid points but at least give me the option, a button on theme settings (you can put a warning regarding peformance). New shortcodes? More options? Great!

Looking forward to the update.

PS: Make sure you add one for adding and styling font-icons all over the place! :P

1) Well, then you’re lucky :) I’m not that lucky because I would say that 80% of themes and plugins I work with have more than “not that serious” mistakes. And even the most popular and appreciated scripts have bugs that are easy to notice.

2) I surely will :) Daisho will be updated on a regular basis, so you will be able to re-download new features every few weeks.

3) Okay, I will! Performance issue is about the fact that 99% will not try to nest shortcodes (WordPress developers say that in Codex) and if we wanted to run do_shortcode() function on nested content it would add redundant work for every single website, every single time it loads even if only 1% of them actually uses this functionality. “Switcher” is additional database request, so it’s even worse :) But I’ve got an idea on how to make it all well-optimized and still deliver rich features, so it’s just a matter of a few weeks to implement all such improvements.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts :) I really appreciate that! If you wish to track development progress of your suggestions you can post them on support forum (your ticket won’t be closed unless added to main package or rejected for some reason but we can always discuss if there’s constructive usage behind suggested changes).

@Flow

Don’t get me wrong but that is bad demo then!

Well, I think that people will generally know that thumbnail will link to corresponding project. You can link multiple thumbnails to 1 project or other external URL as well, so it’s not necessarily a mistake but thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

Once again – demo thumbnails link to random projects and real thumbnails will link to the projects, pages or blog posts you wish.

Dude. I bought this and have a problem with the contact page turning black and received no help from the support page. I have this deploy locally on my mac until content is ready to push to a server. So I’d really appreciate some help here. The problem happened right after I installed the contact form plugin as noted in the video. I’ve followed the video to a tee.

Flow
Flow Author

Please go to [Pages > Contact] and change “Background Color” to “none” (it will become white) or to white. Alternatively, please edit `bg_color` custom field directly.

Flow
Flow Author

Update: I just fixed this in sample content XML file and I hope that this will not confuse anybody else in the future :)

But I don’t think it was really that big issue since you can always change that in “Page Settings” on ever page and in every post. Many themes offer per-page background customization. And it’s just demo content, so everybody will edit that anyway to their liking, so you would have to eventually check those settings and adjust them anyway to your requirements.

Good luck and have a great day!

PS
I can’t see any similar posts on support forum – neither on actual website nor in spam. Are you sure you posted there? It’s recommended place.

And dude. I posted the same questions for days. Please don’t get defensive. I am a purchaser of your product. I just want it to work.

Flow

It works, doesn’t it?

Black background is just 1 demo setting that you can change anytime.

Please link to the questions that are left unanswered. I don’t see them on support forum. There are only 2 opened tickets in Daisho forum. Maybe I have missed something.

There was another issue I posted 3 times and got no response. I followed the video to a tee. Downloaded the sample bio photos and linked them to the local versions. They still did not fade to grey like in the video.

Please link to your questions and I’ll check that. We reply to all of them (usually in under 12h), so the only explanation would be that they were marked as spam by “Akismet” WordPress plugin that we use.

Hello! First I want to say thank you for creating a beautiful theme! I love it. I have read over the documentation which for the most part has been extremely useful!

I am running into a slight problem. I would like for the arrangement of the portfolio thumbnails to be displayed just as they are shown in the PSD that came with the purchased theme (you can view that here: http://imageshack.us/a/img690/8039/jayhravia.jpg) . However, when you go to my page, http://www.jayhsings.com, you can see that the arrangement is anything but what I visioned on the jpeg that I initially linked.

What is the easiest way to format the order of the posts in the portfolio page? I have tried changing the order number(s) for each post, and that doesn’t seem to help with the arrangement.

Thanks in advance. :)

Flow
Flow Author

Thank you for your kind words :)

The trick is to make all projects “small” at the beginning and then change projects one by one from “small” to “medium/large/horizontal/vertical”.

On demo we have order by date and something like: “large”, “small”, “small”, “medium”, “small”, “medium”, “small”, “vertical” and so on. Just switch them to “small” on Daisho homepage and check their order. That’s the trick :) You can setup everything manually, so you can have any layout you wish.

That helped a LOT ! Thank you so much for a timely response. Again, excellent theme! Cheers! :)

Just bought this theme and I get a server error when activating – HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request. Doesn’t happen with other themes… Please advise ASAP .

Flow
Flow Author

Well, I can’t help you without seeing exact error (only Server Administrator can see it in Server Log) but it’s perhaps some single function. 500 errors are usually caused by .htaccess. Let me know once you get some response from admin.

PS
Try removing wp_redirect from framework/miscellaneous/theme_activate.php.

Hi Flow,

The problem seems to come from daisho/framework/admin/background-menu.php. The server error is as follows;

[25-Oct-2012 11:12:38] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’ in /home8/darrenja/public_html/rowdy/wp-content/themes/daisho/framework/admin/background-menu.php on line 1

I deleted background-menu.php and that seems to have fixed the problem for now. Assuming I can’t use the backend features for the background menu now, but I can just change that in the CSS I suppose.

Flow
Flow Author

Ah, that’s the problem. Please see this: http://support.devatic.com/?page_id=82

You were getting one of the most common installation problems (files have been compressed during upload and we don’t allow that because we use our own compression system).

So, you can restore background menu as long as it’s not modified in any way. Please enable WP DEBUG next time to see exact error instead of blank page. You said “HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error)”, so I did not connect those two facts because usually 500 error doesn’t accompany this parse error.

To conclude – everything is fine :) And everything will work fine.

I’d like to buy the theme, but I read it will be upgraded to version 1.9 and 2.0, so if I buy the version 1.8.1 I’ll have access to updtaes or will I have to buy again?

Looks like awesome support : ) I brough this theme a while ago. I have a small problem. The portfolio category filter links have broken the ones that sort the portfolio items into similar categories, you cannot hover over them or link to them. They were working and I’ve done something to stop them form working. Please advise : )

I would like to purchase this theme, when I purchase it will I encounter ‘missing style sheets’ if so, how do you suggest I address it. Thanks Alex

You will not encounter this if you unzip the package you have downloaded and upload only theme package named “daisho.zip”. Full instructions and video: http://support.forcg.com/bb-templates/kakumei-flow/help/daisho/index.html#installingTheTheme

Hi mate, one more issue with the theme. The blog page is playing up. The top portion of the navigation and logo is not visible. http://www.ylife.co.nz/?page_id=2482

Flow

When I enter that URL I see navigation. It’s just like on the demo: http://themes.devatic.com/daisho/blog/

when the new version of template?

Flow
Flow Author

When it’s ready and fully functional.

My plans are to release 2 updates by the end of this year but I can’t promise any exact dates, yet. We’re moving a lot of Javascript to CSS3 in the past days which seems to be much better approach if we consider future of browsers and devices :)

Hello. I need to change the blog layout. I need to have logo on top and right sidebar. How can I get the blog page and the single posts just like the rest of the site? how do I get template-blog.php and single.php to be more like the page.php. I mean navigation and logo on top and a right sidebar. thank you

Flow
Flow Author

That code is for v1.9 (to be released soon) and for your current version, please use this in addition to what you already have:

.archive #main-nav-compact, .single-post #main-nav-compact, .search #main-nav-compact, .page-template.page-template-template-blog-php #main-nav-compact { display: none; }

Right sidebar can be enabled under [Pages > Add New] in page settings.

Header prob solved thanks.

The right sidebar is not there yet! I changed, in the page settings, the layout from “full-width” to “right sidebar” and chose which sidebar I want to be shown. Nothing happens!

How do I get the sidebar to be displayed on the single post and on the blog page?

thank you in advance

Flow
Flow Author

It should be as simple as this – select “Right Sidebar” layout and that’s all. It works for pages only. Please update to 1.9-alpha1 released yesterday to have sidebars in posts, too.

Please check our support forum if possible to get quicker help. Thanks :)

Hey Flow! Great theme! Do you know if there is a way to get the content_block css without the slider? I’d like to list our team in a grid (3 across, 2 tall), but have that same style. Thanks!

Flow
Flow Author

I think it would be the easiest to just hide the arrows: .scrollbar-arrowleft, .scrollbar-arrowright { display: none!important; }. And if you only need to do that on 1 page then: .page-id-ID .scrollbar-arrowleft,...... where ID is page ID as described here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/body_class

savesheep

Flow you are amazing! Last part of this – how can I have a second row of content_block? Now that scrolling is gone, the fourth, fifth and sixth blocks don’t show up at all. I’d like them to show up beneath the top three. Thoughts?

Also, do you do freelance?

HI Flow!! Really Beautifull Theme :)

We have just a little problem with the slideshow, itch images exceed from the top of the slider area, maybe it’s because we don’t know the good size for the pics or how to resize them good.. if you need to see our site: http://globestoppeurs.com

thank you by advance

Globestoppeurs.

Flow
Flow Author

Thanks!

There is no “ideal” size and it’s going to work with images in all sizes. To make it fit cyan area you have an option to adjust vertical and horizontal offset under [Slideshow > Add New]. It’s somewhere next to the field where you can upload image. I hope that this will help :) You can put there something like -20px or 20px to move it one direction or another.

Awesome theme!

I have a issue with the exclude portfolio categories. If I exclude one – let’s say “ACAT” from showing in the portfolio area. It then goes and hides everything that “ACAT” has under it (which is fine). But when a portfolio item has two categories linked to it say “ACAT” and “BCAT”, hiding “ACAT” then goes and hides all linked “BCAT” items.

Is there a way to make it just remove portfolio items in the category assigned and not remove them if they are linked to another category that is still showing?

Thanks

Flow
Flow Author

Thank you! :)

In such event you need “include categories” and not “exclude categories” option. Where are you trying to do that? On homepage portfolio or portfolio page?

Temporary solution might include going to index.php, single-portfolio.php and template-portfolio.php and changing 'operator' => 'NOT IN' to 'operator' => 'IN'. There is only 1 place like that in each of those files. I’m not sure if that’s the only required change. If you wish to see that option in main files, please post is as suggestion on our support forum and I’ll notify you once it’s done.

tribalapes

Thanks for replying, I’m doing it on the portfolio page (grid portfolio) but it’s acting as our homepage.

Will check out that fix you suggested!

Thanks

What is the: Content Selector, Post Selector ,Navigation Selector and the Next Page Selector. if you use the infinite loading like on the http://newsbare.com/ page.

Robinao

It’s in the selector section of the infinite Scroll plugin.

Flow

Ahh, yes, now I see. So, it’s standard CSS selector. Let’s say you have something like this: <div class="xyz">content</div>. Selector for this DIV is going to be exactly .xyz.

The have instructions on how to make Infinite Scroll Plugin work with websites but I think that you’ll need help of developer anyway. We made it work for newsbare.com.

Hi Flow, I am having trouble with the typography plugin for this theme. I have no css or coding skills and do not understand ‘selectors’. I have read the documentation but do not know how to make the typefaces or colour change in my website. It is currently still in the default font and colours. Any help would be really appreciated.

Flow
Flow Author

Typography Plugin is optional tool that some people find useful and some may not need to install it. If you need to change fonts then I need to ask you to spend some time on getting to know selectors (it’s easy) or you can hire developer to do changes like that quickly and correctly (and for very low hourly rate – see support forum).

CSS selectors knowledge is necessary to use Typography Plugin as seen here: http://vimeo.com/22093944. It’s core idea of this plugin. It’s worth getting to know selectors because it’s as easy as watching 2 or 3 YouTube videos (30-60 minutes) or reading one tutorial on that. It’s simple as HTML and you are probably familiar with a lot of HTML tags – like the ones that bold text, create link, insert image or DIV etc. Some basic knowledge about HTML and CSS (including selectors) is very useful for website owners. In modern world it’s becoming like knowledge of MS Word or Excel – no matter who you are and what you do, you will always find such applications useful.

Imagine two situations:
  • We could create 50 pre-made fields in admin panel with basic font options (color, font family, size) like many other authors (those would be like A: menu font; B: menu highlight font, C: welcome text font etc.).
  • Or we could include Typography Plugin where you have interface for almost all CSS2 and CSS3 font properties and unlimited space to put your selectors (so you can adjust whatever you need).

Both above do EXACTLY the same but in the first option you are limited to 50 pre-made options and a few font settings (out of ~20 available) and in second we give you a tool that makes both unlimited in any way.

A few selectors are available here: http://support.forcg.com/topic/daisho-common-changes (feel free to request more from me and I will update that page). So, the best you can do it request selectors from me or check videos in that thread (and main Typography video that I linked to).

PS
The question: Is this really complicated or you feel like you can do it after watching Typography Video? It seems to be obvious after some practice. Maybe I should include better tutorial?
