Hi, I am very interested in this theme! It looks and works amazing and is definitely at the top of my list for my next project. Question. My main interest is the portfolio. I like how you have small, large and vertical squares all working together to form a grid. I read in your documentation that I can upload a photo and select the thumbnail size. It will resize it for me. What if I don’t want an image resized though? Meaning if a small square was 100×100px and I wanted to design a “perfect thumbnail” just how I wanted it to be seen at 100×100px, could I upload a 100×100px thumbnail (and it would obviously not be resized) and then when I click to view the post, I could then see the larger full size version? Lastly, how hard would be it to have smaller thumbnail sizes in the portfolio (even smaller than the ones you have now) and yet they would still shuffle, resize and move around within the portfolio? Thanks!

PS, to clarify, I want to take the smallest thumbnail you have and divide that into four smaller thumbnails. Would it be possible for me to add that to use within the portfolio?

Flow

I’m happy that you like it :)

1) You can basically upload two things:

2) “Lastly, how hard would be it to have smaller thumbnail sizes in the portfolio (even smaller than the ones you have now) and yet they would still shuffle, resize and move around within the portfolio?” Easy, time required to do this for average developer: 1h (some code changes are necessary here).

I hope that helps :)

Default-user

Thank you so much for your detailed response. That definitely makes sense. So basically it sounds like to get the best looking thumbnails, I should make my graphics at 440×300px (knowing that they will be scaled down, yet look sharp on the retina displays)? The same concept would apply to the larger rectangular thumbnails and the vertical thumbnails?

I do some web design and I’m sure I could figure it out (new thumbnail sizes). If I can’t, can I ask for help on your support forum after I purchase? Or would I need to hire you? Thanks again!

Flow

On demo we use 220×150px (and some are larger). Since there are not many Retina users you can use anything :) Smaller images make website faster, larger images make it look a bit better on Retina displays.

“The same concept would apply to the larger rectangular thumbnails and the vertical thumbnails?”
Yes.

“If I can’t, can I ask for help on your support forum after I purchase?”
Obviously, yes.

“Or would I need to hire you?”
There are developers on support forum that you can hire (they are a separate company that we collaborate with). If you have some budget then it’s a lot easier but generally you’ll get free help for anything that requires less than ~15 minutes of work. If something takes more than 15 minutes of work then it’s perhaps too complex to be described on support forum and we’ll ask you to contact developer.

You’re the second user that tests trial. It should work mostly fine but if you see issues – let me know :)

I may be being a little thick here but how does the auto-update functionality work in 1.9? I have my credentials for your support forum populated and validated but I’m not seeing an option to update to the latest 1.9.0.2.

Flow

You can check the latest version under [Daisho > About] and update under [Dashboard > Updates].

Requirements:
  • On support forum please make sure to put valid item purchase code
  • Please open at least 1 topic (or do anything on that forum to validate user)
  • Have WP 3.4 or newer

And it should work :) Let me know if it’s fine.

Thanks. I saw that but it the server version shows blanks. Guessing that’s why it’s not giving me the option to update.

I’m validated on your support forums and have a couple of posts. Weird. Running 3.4.2

On another note, the documentation refers to here for your icons/websymbols but I can’t seem to locate the ones used in the theme. http://www.justbenicestudio.com/studio/websymbols/ or at least they don’t match up what’s shown. (Being lazy to check the image files :))

Flow

1) “I saw that but it the server version shows blanks.” I can login and take a look. Please create support ticket. It’s a brand-new feature and I tested it only on 3 servers so far – it worked everywhere (including localhost).

2) There are 3 sets in total. Please check the first link in this section and you’ll find them: http://support.forcg.com/bb-templates/kakumei-flow/help/daisho/index.html#menus

I hope that helps!

Hi Flow,

I have a question before buying. My client has one design in mind, and I wonder if it is possible. I’ll explain it in percentages, hope you understand!

Lets say the total width is 100% of the homepage.

30%-30%-30% 50% (centered) 30%-30%-30%

I hope this is achievable using the grid portfolio homepage. Can I also change the grid size manually, so not just the 4 pre-set sizes?

Many thanks, and happy new year!

,Coenie

Flow

Thumbnails grid can’t be easily like that but any sub-page can be like that either with grid system or custom containers (very simple). You may want to check trial website and perhaps that will answer your questions :) You have access to full back-end and documentation before purchase so you can experiment yourself. After testing please let me know if you still have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them. Thanks and I wish you great and merry Christmas!

Thanks for your reply Flow, much appreciated! However I am experimenting with the grid shortcodes, but I can’t get the hover effect to work. So basically I want the same effects used for the portfolio page. Can you guide me in the right direction?

Your help is much appreciated, I need to make an offer for a big client in the coming days, but first I want to know if I am able to develop it :-)

I am using the 14 days trail btw, ideal!

Greets,

Coen

Flow
I created sample page that you’re probably looking for:

I added some inline styleto make it more visible where each column is present.

Hover effect and other similar effect can be added with .element:hover. Some coding knowledge is required to do that but it’s all easy and can be done in admin panel.

Hi Flow,

Thank you for helping me and even create a page with the actual codes. I just purchased your theme :-)

,Cheers.

Hello i can´t updated to 1.9.0.2 I download the theme from themeforest again and it´s the 1.9.0.1 version. I tried to make a automatic updated and not works… How can I fix?

Flow

1) Please consider if you need such small updates anyway. Isn’t it better to update theme every 3-6 months once significant improvements are present?

2) We publish new updates every 3-10 days and they are available via Auto-update server only. To use it please fill in your support forum login & password under [Daisho > General] and update under [Dashboard > Updates]. It surely works if your support forum account has valid purchase code added to profile.

3) We will upload only major updates (less often) to Themeforest – like every 30-60 days. Updates on Auto-update server are almost “nightly” releases – delivered as we work on them.

Sorry, love theme – but refuses to install on BlueHost WP

Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

Name Description themeforest-2585124-daisho-flexible-wordpress-portfolio-theme Stylesheet is missing.

It’s pissing me of that this is not a simple install … like Woo, Thesis, WPZoom,. etc.

Flow

You’re perhaps first time Themeforest purchaser. It’s very common issue that many more people encounter (also clearly mentioned in the documentation and Envato Knowledgebase).

I’m sorry that it made you frustrated but I hope that you’ll calm down soon. Please feel free to ask questions in such events and I’ll be happy to help you! Please try this: http://support.envato.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/269/0/my-wordpress-theme-isnt-working-what-should-i-do

That should help :) In short: Please unzip and upload theme package.

Default-user

Sorry. Have calmed down. Was drunk – here in China on Baijiu: 56% alcohol -and muddled. Didn’t realize that the theme was hidden away within two layers of zip folders.

I would say: I’ll never drink this stuff again … but I know that’s not true.

Thanks for your patience – with idiots like me.

Flow

No worries :) We’ll be happy to answer all your questions and help you with any issues you encounter. It you encounter any difficulties all we ask is a bit of patience and it will surely be resolved soon. Steps:

1) Visit support forum. 2) Ask any questions. 3) Give us a few hours to answer.

The truth is that WordPress and websites in general are extremely complex subject. All that requires a lot of knowledge and experience. The task of theme developers is to deliver themes and plugins that are as easy to use as possible but questions are rather inevitable. So, cooperation and patience make everyone’s work much easier :) Thanks!

Do you have a html version?

Flow

There is no HTML version and we do not plan to release one yet. However, moving WP -> HTML isn’t that difficult :) It’s a couple of hours or days of work (depending on which features you need any which can be skipped).

Default-user

Can you do that for me? (WP->HTML)

Flow

There are developers available to do that on support forum in “Hire Developer” area. Please email me to get access to that area – you’ll be able to ask for estimated time & cost. For now I can say that it’s surely more than $100 (2 hours of work). I think that this time would be required to move core scripts to HTML.

How customisable is this theme? Can I strip back the header and footer text? Make the top banner text only?

Flow

You can test back-end on trial website. As for custom modification – code is clean and readable. All things like that can be done within 30-120 minutes of work and developers can help you with that in “Hire Developer” support forum area. Some basic changes (that are not too complex and can be described on forum) qualify for free support.

Can I strip back the header and footer text? Make the top banner text only?
With custom modification – yes. Footer can be empty – no columns, no data without any modifications. And if you need to adjust header then you can add display: none; to unwanted elements. It all seems to be a simple modification (10 minutes of work? And it most likely qualifies for free support.).

Please make sure that everything will work just like you want before purchase. Feel free to ask more questions. Thanks!

Hello.

Is it possible to redirect a portfolio item to an external link?

For example, if I click at: http://themes.devatic.com/daisho/portfolio/bas-van-der-veer/ Go to: http://www.bas-van-der-veer.com

I’ll appreciate your response.

Thank you.

Yes. Under [Portfolio > Add New] there is “External link” option.

Hi Flow.

Can’t seems to find it.. I’m using version: 1.0.2

Please advice.

It’s available since version like 1.8 or 1.9. We added this feature because many people requested it. Initially it wasn’t present.

thanks

Flow

Are you uploading it via [Appearance > Themes > Install > Upload]? I’m not sure what do you mean by “freeze” because script can either work or not work (in the worst case return some error, blank page etc.). I can take a look and install that for you. Please create support ticket and I’ll check soon :)

Hi – would like to purchase your design but had a question on slide show options. If I click on one of the thumbnails on the home page, it takes me to a sub-page. Could I then display my images in a sliding gallery format, using customisable sizes, with a bit of text in a left sidebar? Currently it is set up in a blog style listed gallery. Thanks, Rohan

Flow

Please check trial website to see what is possible and what’s not – I hope that this will answer your question better than me :) You can basically link thumbnails to posts or pages and then you can use gallery (like gallery created by some plugin). Let me know if you still need help after testing. Thanks!

Default-user

Hi – thanks for your quick response. I am indeed trying the trial version where I do not have the option to install plugins. Hence my question. I am a photographer looking for a plug and play option. So would be quite handy if you can point me to how to get about installing plugins in the trial version so I can test out for myself. Cheers!

Flow

There’s no way to install plugins there unfortunately for security reasons. There are two options:

  • You can assume that any plugin will work just like it does on Twenty Twelve theme.
  • Please email me with your website name and plugin that you would like to install. We can enable it for your website but this may take some time because we need to check its entire code and decide if it’s safe to be installed.

Thanks.

Flow

I’m happy that you like it :) You can find this under [Daisho > General > Info Box]. You can either disable it or pick some page that it will use to display content there. By default it’s [Pages > Info Box]. You can use there two grid system columns like we do on demo and any other information.

Hi, I bought the theme and almost finished working on it. However, only today I managed to see how it looks like in IE8 – TERRIBLE! there are still a substantial amount of users using IE8 and I cannot afford to lose so many people. I don’t expect it to be perfect, but never have I expiated it to be as bad as it is.

Is there any code or fix I can use to make it look a little bit more normal on IE8??

Your help would be greatly appreciated as I spent weeks on building the site and I do really love the theme. Thank you.

Flow

We don’t support IE8 and we will never support it – simply because it is too old and it doesn’t have HTML5, CSS3, up to date JS, it has tons of bugs and it is not even supported by Microsoft or available for download at this moment. IE8 is expected to be completely gone in 2013. Even Microsoft thinks this way and it doesn’t recommend IE8 for any use to anybody at this moment.

This is the final decision on IE6,7,8 support – there’s no point in limiting scripts just to support that. We do support: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE9, IE10, iOS/iPhone, iOS/iPad, Android, Windows Phone, Opera Mini (in large part), both PC and Mac.

there are still a substantial amount of users using IE8
I think that you’re (fortunately) wrong here. Let’s take a look at facts:
  • IE in general is falling terribly down each month. From 24% to 12% (StatCounter stats) this year. Easier to read version: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
  • IE browsers are used mostly in countries like China and most China people can’t even access your website: See Map. Aren’t you interested in USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Japan, Europe and similar visitors?
  • Users from countries that you care about use the newest computers, mobile phones, tablets and certainly Chrome or Firefox (or at least IE9 or IE10 which work fine).
  • If someone uses IE in USA it’s probably corporation or school that can’t install Chrome due to some internal regulations. Home users use mobile phones, Safari on Mac or Chrome on PC to access your website. And that’s exactly what we’re aiming.
  • Now let’s focus on older IEs vs newer IEs. IE8 users as of December 2012 are: 7.6%. And before 2013 ends they will be like 2-4% (still mainly in China). I hope that you clearly see why there’s no reason in supporting that now. Simply because the reality is that no one is using it (or will not be using this shortly).
  • Furthermore, Windows 7 and Windows 8 come with IE9 and IE10. And older systems like Windows XP can’t be installed on the newest computers at all. Even if someone uses 1GB of RAM, Core 2 Duo and Windows XP he’ll soon move to i3, i5 or i7 processor because such old computer simply lag at this moment and you need to change computers every 3-6 years anyway. And there’s high probability that such home user (even of slow and old computer) is running Chrome. In IE8 he would see many, many broken websites.
  • Conclusion: forget about IE6,7,8 and focus on getting website that is well scalable on mobile phones and tablets. The reality is that 3-4” device (mobile phone), 8” device (tablet), 15” device (laptop) and 24” screen (desktop computer) can have resolutions ranging from 320px to 4000px+. The best decision you can make is to have a website that uses UNITS instead of pixels and that works equally fine on 3-inches 1920×1080 mobile phone and on 15-inch 2880×1800px Retina laptop. I assure you that we know what we’re doing and I’m happy to discuss that with you :) Daisho is actually a very good choice because it supports everything that should be supported and it’s strongly focues on the future. And its next version – 1.9.1 will introduce more updates that will make it future proof. You really don’t need to care about IE8 users. We can assume that it is finally dead.

Let me know what do you think! We can discuss that but I think that facts speak for themselves. If IE8 was important we would support it (like we support everything that is up to date). The decision is that we’ll spend our resources to making improvements to future devices and browsers which is surely a better choice for purchasers and your visitors.

Default-user

Thanks for your thorough response. Our clients are business users (HR managers) and many of them still use unfortunately XP with no ability to use chrome or firefox (download restrictions). I personally agree with everything you said and the general numbers are true, but for my clients I must assume the number of IE8 users are higher than average. That is way I asked if there is a simple code or fix that will make it look a little bit better (not 100% compatible), because right now it is impossible to even browse in the site, its all messed up. thanks.

Flow

Yes, it may be like that. Some scripts may be disabled or broken because we use functions and other things that are available since CSS3, HTML5 and the newest Javascript “era” and they are not present in IE8. Some functions that we used are simply not there and they require fallback if they are supposed to work. I just opened Daisho in IE8 and it actually works.

IE7 standards:

IE8 standards:

IE9 standards:

IE10 standards:

Interesting thing: our code is 100% correct. It’s IE’s fault. As you can see IE9 and IE10 are the first ones to render correct code correctly.

Can something be done in your case?

  • At first I just want to mention that I think that we did not break any promise because Daisho Item Description Page never mentioned compatibility with IE8 and you had access to demo website and free 14-days trial website before purchase. You could test that. I would love to satisfy your needs and we certainly want to be 100% fair to customers, so we clearly show them everything (back-end before purchase, documentation before purchase, installation videos before purchase, compatibility with browsers/devices before purchase) but in this case I’m afraid that not much can be done on our side.
  • You’re right that China and USA corporations are the last ones that use IE8 and Windows XP (like I mentioned in my previous comment).
  • Both will soon move to better solutions – I doubt they will “torture” themselves on slow 1GHz or 2GHz machines much longer. They have to move to Windows 7 or Windows 8. This will happen in just a few months… just a few weeks (25-50 weeks from now is very soon).
  • The only solution I see is getting someone to check all broken components in IE8. You can ask here: http://support.forcg.com/forum/hire-developer and some developer will surely help you.

Hello and I wish you a great and happy new year too! :)

The best and the simplest way to add them is using plugins. Daisho should be compatible with majority of them.
