Hi there, I am an absolutely newbie and trying to customize your theme.

I am stucked with 2 issues.

1. Have read through the documentation but having difficulty to understand how I can setup a portfolio like you presented it here: http://demos2.ruventhemes.com/darkwhite/portfolio-type/illustration/

Would you mind please providing a simple step-by-step how-to guide that I can follow to achieve this?

2. Also, I have customized the page description on all existing pages but each new blog entry is created with a page for which I don’t get it how to customize this page for as it is still in the standard layout.

Thank you!

Best wishes, Marcus

Hi Marcus,

1. All you have to do is install the Ruven Toolkit plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ruven-toolkit/ . After the activation you’ll be able to add Portfolio Items (the menu button will show up in your admin panel). To show your portfolio items, create a page and assign the “Portfolio” template to it. You can also customize the portfolio layout in the customizer. Further you can give each portfolio item a “type” (like a category for portfolios). To link to an overview of portfolio items of one specific type, you have to go to the WordPress Menu manager (Appearance > Menus) and add the “Portfolio Types” panel, by clicking on the “Screen Options” tab (top right on the screen). Now you can easily add portfolio type menu items :)

2. If you’re talking about the big heading text on top of each page, you can edit the default title and text in the customizer (Appearance > Customize).

Hi Ruven, thank you for your quick reply.

I will follow your portfolio process to see if I have understand how it shall be used. :)

With the second issue I have modified the title and title description of each existing page but I guess the thing is that I am not clear how to assign a page to present the blog entries. Btw. I have selected the Standard layout in the customizer for the blog.

At the moment the page with the blog entries are shown when I click on my logo but I am not clear which page is presented there and how to modify this page description and title as I have no such page in the pages section listed. Guess it is a php template, or?

Default-user

I mean I don’t understand how to assign a page to the blog mode so to speak and how can I customize the page which is loaded when someone clicks on the logo?

Best wishes, Marcus

Default-user

Hi Ruven, I succeeded with the Portfolio setup and I managed to fix my second issue. Which page was loaded when I clicked on the logo depends on the settings in the customiser for the static /dynamic dropdown selection and the pages chosen there.

So, I managed to do a basic customisation so far. :)

Now I am looking forward to add custom widgets to the pages .. let’s see if I will manage this easily. :D

Cheers, Marcus

Hey Marcus, I’m glad you found the option. WordPress can be a bit tricky in the beginning, but as you play around with it it’ll all start to make sense. There are also tons of tutorials and how-tos out there :)

I just have one pre-purchase question: how easy is customization with this theme?

RuvenThemes

It depends on how you define customization. The themes code is based on WordPress standards and practices (not as bloated as other themes), and the CSS is separated into groups, so you can find everything easier. Instead of an admin panel, Darkwhite uses the customizer that is build into WP. From here you can change layouts and menus, and also apply custom CSS and header/footer code very easy. :)

Hi, I think your theme looks great! Simple and intuitive design. Very nice.

I have a pre-purchase question: Are there also buttons within the theme like a connection to Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and a Facebook like button? And how about SEO?

Thanks, Robert

RuvenThemes

Hi Robert,

The theme itself doesn’t come with any social buttons, but there are tons of plugins out there to integrate those. I personally like ZillaSocial. I prefer this solution over an embedded one, because this way you can decide on how your buttons look.

The theme is SEO optimized and should work with all SEO plugins that are out there :)

Let me know if you have more questions.

And also, can you make this theme WP-PageNavi compatible? ZillaLikes integration? :)

RuvenThemes

Hi,

They both work just fine :)

For WP-PageNavi, just replace the occurrences of rvn_put_content_nav() with wp_pagenavi() and paste the following CSS code into the “Custom CSS Code” field in the Customizer under General Settings>

.wp-pagenavi { margin: 0 20px; text-align: center; padding: 35px 0; border-top: 1px solid #e1e1e1;  }

Let me know if you have more questions :)

Hi! Small question. I’m trying to add a CSS file to be able to use the “CSS Social buttons”.

Following this guide: http://webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/css-social-buttons

I’ve uploaded the images and the CSS file. Now I add this:

<link href="social-buttons.css" rel="stylesheet">

In the “customizer > general settings > Header code” but the whole sites design breaks. Inserting that code directly into header.php causes the same.

Copying the whole CSS content into “Custom css code” does also not work.

The only way i’ve go it working was copying the whole button css content into styles.css

But I would like to not edit the files directly… Any suggestion?

RuvenThemes

Hi,

The code above can’t work, because it is not an absolute path and the file probably can’t be found. However, I went ahead and put the buttons and CSS into a child theme for you.

Please install and activate this child theme: http://cl.ly/NOsf (but leave the original theme installed).

Now the buttons should work just fine :)

LunaticZorr

Hi! Thanks for your answer and the child theme. I just installed it and activated it.

I’ve noticed that the configurations made to parent theme through customizer don’t “pass over” to the child theme. Is that normal?

Oh, and since I activated the child theme, each time I load my website it seems not to load correctly and it shows as on the screenshot:

http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/7588/problempp.png

I need to reload the page to be able to see it correctly. Is that a child themes issue? It seems as it’s not loading correctly the parents theme CSS…

RuvenThemes

Hm, something isn’t right there. Could you create an admin account for the email support[at]ruventhemes.com and send me a mail with the login data and short summary of the problem within this email, so I can investigate it?

LunaticZorr

Done! Thank you very much for your support!

RuvenThemes

Hi Kevin,

I think I found the source of the error. It’s the Minify plugin you’re using. I deactivated it and the site runs good now. I think the error happened, because the child theme uses the CSS @import command to include the original themes CSS file and the minify plugin somehow messes with this command. The use of @import is recommended by the WP Codex. So it’s not a theme error, but the plugins. I suggest to use a different minify plugin and let the developer of the deactivated one know that his plugins is not compatible with child themes.

Best regards, Ruven

LunaticZorr

Thank you very much Ruven! I’ll stay for a while with no “minimizing” plugin because I notice that the site is not really slower without that type of plugin. Best and fastest support I’ve had so far and 5 starts for your amazing theme :)

Well… Another small problem I seem to have.

I’m trying to create a new post using the video post type. I want to use a youtube video so I paste the youtube embed code:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xqNJPGdR_DI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

If I click preview, it does not show any video, it seems to embed into the iframe the homepage of my website.

Why does this happen?

RuvenThemes

Hi Kevin,

I logged in to your site and tried it out, and now it seems to work. I don’t know what caused the error, but I’ll run some tests on this.

Let me know if it happens again or if there are other issues.

LunaticZorr

Hm… Still the same problem when using the post preview function. But I’ve seen that once published, the video appears correctly, which is the important thing :D

RuvenThemes

There might be some Javascript interfering. I’ll run some tests this weekend and let you know :)

LunaticZorr

Ok! Thanks :D If necessary, you can do some test on my site. User is still active. :)

How can I disable the feature image on a single post page?

Hi, there is no option for this right now, but I’m gonna build one in for the next update. Do you want to disable featured image on all your single post pages or just for one specific?

Preferibly both. Having the option of disabling on all single post pages or just a single post page.

Yes, i did it already i read your documentation… I will try to deactivate some plugins, i have jetpack, Better WP Security and some others, perhaps there is a conflict. Or a misunderstood from myself ! Thank You

RuvenThemes

The the theme should work just fine with other plugins. You just have to look in your admin panel menu on the left side for a menu link named “Portfolio Items”. To add one is no different than adding a post.

Hello

I’m having an issue with the portfolio aspect of the theme. I installed your plugins and managed to create a portfolio post. However, whenever I click to see the page, it says error this page doesn’t exist. Am I supposed to set something up? The post also doesn’t show in my blog.

RuvenThemes

Could you create an admin account for the email support[at]ruventhemes.com and send me a mail with the login data and short summary of the problem within this email, so I can investigate it?

RuvenThemes

Hi Carine, I fixed the problem. It was actually just a WordPress hickup and not a theme issue. I just had to hit “Save Changes” under “Permalink Settings” to refresh the rewrite rules. WordPress does this sometimes when you add new things like post types (for the portfolio).

Default-user

I wouldn’t have figured it out on my own. Thank you so much for your help! :)

I’m going to purchase your theme later today, it’s absolutely gorgeous! I was wondering if you can include a way to display your clients at the bottom of the page in an update? Much like this theme where you can add client logos at the bottom of the page: http://devatic.com/?theme=Daisho I think it would make an awesome theme even better :D

RuvenThemes

Hi Julius, I’ll think about the idea. Till then, I can help you customize the theme, so you can display client logos as a picture on the bottom of a certain page :)

Sounds great! I’m no codejunkie but I know enough to copy and paste some code. If you can helt me that would be neat. For a payment or as a part of my purchase of the theme?

Just shoot me a mail to support[at]ruventhemes.com after you purchase and give me a day. I’ll make a modification in the backend and send you the modified theme :)

Hi – really nice theme! Pre-purchase question – I was just wondering how this theme handles logos as the default “logo” is the darklight text in two CSS styles. Is it possible to recreate this style?

Also, is it possible to upload an image for a logo (is this retina enabled?).

RuvenThemes

You can completely recreate the text logo in the backend. You can define which part should be thick and thin. You can also upload an image as logo and define paddings. Here is a screenshot of the customizer section, that should explain it better :)http://cl.ly/NVic

Hi! I got a small question.

For sure you’ll know that Wordpress 3.6 will be released in April and one of the features it will integrate are post types:

http://wpmu.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/post-formats-1.png

My question is if your theme will be update to adapt to that new feature. Because at this moment the custom post types are available through your theme. But with the new Wordpress, will they still work? Will they be “absorbed” by the Wordpress 3.6 default post types?

Thanks!

RuvenThemes

Hi Kevin,

I would really like to support the new custom post format standard fields, because I want to keep the theme as close to WP standards as possible. Right now the specs for this new feature are still very vague (no beta available at this point), but I’ll take a close look, once the first RCs start appearing. I hope that I can then convert my custom fields to the standard fields with an update and eventually get totally rid of the custom fields. If that is not possible, I’ll try to offer users an option to activate the new feature and turn off the custom fields. But as I said, I still have to look into this once it’s more clear how the feature will be implemented and what API can be used :)

LunaticZorr

Thanks for the answer! I’m glad to read that you’ll try to support the new built-in post types.

I misread an article and thought that the beta was already released, but after re-reading it I’ve seen my mistake. But it should be out soon :)

Thanks a lot for your answer!

I needed some help.

I like the theme, but whenever I add a featured image, it automatically is inserting that image into the top of my posts. I’ve searched wordpress documentation and I think that where you need to edit is different based on which theme you are using.

So to make it clear: I want to set a featured image. I still want that image thumnail to appear on the main page. But I don’t want that image inserted into the top of my post automatically.

Thanks.

RuvenThemes

Hi, I’m about to release an update that gives you the option to remove featured images from the post. It should be out in the next days. I’ll announce it on my social networks:

Default-user

Here is a page where the lightbox plug in is not applying it to the image http://tiltmodearmy.com/?p=13197

RuvenThemes

Hi, I read through the plugin documentation and the reason the lightbox does not work is simply that the plugin was designed for gallery images / content images. Basically an image needs to link to a bigger version of itself in order for the plugin to work and since the single posts don’t have any link applied to the featured image (just like the WordPress default themes), no lightbox pops up. If you like I can send you a child theme where I link the featured images in the single templates to a bigger version of themself in order to make the plugin work also with the featured images.

That would be nice, please email me.

Hello. I love your theme :) I have attached a screenshot of a formatting problem I am having in the tab(?) area.

http://imgur.com/50ODyiz

As you can see, there is no space after the title of my page, and the name of my website by default. However, if I add a space after the page title (not the page header), then it does format correctly. While that is a nice work around, I would have to go back and make sure to add a space to all of my titles. And what if you fix it? Then I would have to go back and get rid of the space. :P

Also, while we are on the subject, the tab shows the name of the site twice – for example, it looks like this: “Name of site | Name of site” Wouldn’t a more accurate way of showing it be “Name of site | name of page/category” ?

I’m really happy with my purchase. Thank you for the design. It’s highly flexible and it’s been fun to use.

Raymond

RuvenThemes

Hi Raymond. That’s very weird. I have a filter function that formats the title in the format [post/page title] – [site name] and on the home page [site name] – [tagline]

Could you check if you have any plugins installed that maybe apply their own format (some SEO plugins do that)?

Also could I have a link to your site?

Best regards, Ruven

Default-user

I do have a SEO pluggin. That might be the cause of it.

I have an “under construction” page setup on my site right now because I am still getting it ready. But if you want, if I add you as a subscriber, you can see how it looks. I just need an email to set it up.

You can DM it to me on Twitter: @raymondduke.

RuvenThemes

Nice, could you create an admin account for the email support[at]ruventhemes.com and send me a mail with the login data and short summary of the problem again (for the record) within this email?

Default-user

Sure. You are set up. I am sending you an email right now with a description of the issue.

RuvenThemes

Ok, I fixed the problem. I just deactivated the “Rewrite Titles” option in the plugin settings.

If you are satisfied with my support, please consider rating the theme :)

Default-user

You are awesome. What pluggin setting was it? The SEO pluggin? This is my first time using Wordpress. :)

I’m not sure where to go to rate the theme.

RuvenThemes

Yea, it was the SEO plugin. I’m a little surprised that a popular plugin like this caused this error, because I’m actually using a filter function for the title and didn’t “hard-code” anything. That’s best practice, but I guess not all plugins support it yet.
