Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select posts to be included in the “News in Pictures” section?

To include posts in the “News in Pictures” section, simply tag your chosen post “pictures” without the quotes.

How do I set post thumbnails and what dimensions are used?

Deadline uses the WordPress 2.9+ Post Thumbnail feature for all post thumbnails and so you will need to be running version 2.9 or higher of WordPress to use them correctly.

You only need to set the featured image for each post once. Just ensure that your chosen image is 460×280 or larger – the theme will then resize the image multiple times for different scenarios.

Do note that the theme will resize images on upload only, not images that have been uploaded before the theme is activated.

How can I change the date format in the header?

Header.php, line 130:

                <!-- BEGIN #date -->
                <div id="date">
                    <p class="rounded"><?php echo date("l d F Y"); ?></p>
                <!-- END #date -->
                </div>

This is the PHP date function. For more on how to use this function see here: http://php.net/manual/en/function.date.php

I mark my posts with “featured” (without the quotes) and posts still do not show.

Firstly, ensure that the posts are correctly tagged “featured” without the quotation marks.

Next, delete any previous category called featured you may have had before installing the theme.

Lastly, ensure that the ‘tag slug’ for the featured tag is actually set to “featured” and not “featured-x”. You can edit the post tags by navigating to Admin > Posts > Post Tags

Can I show adsense instead of banners?

Yes! If you need to show adsense in a sidebar, simply use a text widget and insert your generated adsense code.

If you need to place adsense instead of the header banner, open header.php and find:

            <?php if ($tz_banner_header == "true") { /* Display 468x60 banner if checked in theme options */ ?>
            <!-- BEGIN #banner-header -->
            <div id="banner-header">
                <a href="<?php echo ($tz_banner_dest_url); ?>"><img src="<?php echo ($tz_banner_img_url); ?>" alt="banner" width="468" height="60" /></a>
            <!-- END #banner-header -->
            </div>
            <?php } ?>

Replace:

<a href="<?php echo ($tz_banner_dest_url); ?>"><img src="<?php echo ($tz_banner_img_url); ?>" alt="banner" width="468" height="60" /></a>

with your adsense code.

Note, you will still need to check the option on in the theme options to display the banner.

I do not want to show the featured image on the post page, how can I remove it?

Removing the featured image from the post page is relatively simple. Open single.php, find and remove the following code:

                            <?php if (  (function_exists('has_post_thumbnail')) && (has_post_thumbnail())  ) { /* if post has post thumbnail */ ?>
                            <div class="post-thumb">
                                <?php the_post_thumbnail('lead-image'); /* post thumbnail settings configured in functions.php */ ?>
                            </div>
                            <?php } ?>

How can I remove the social media sharing column and widen the main content column?

For this to happen you will need to remove the social sharing and RSS feed HTML .

In single.php, line 65, you will see a block of code beginning with:

<!-- BEGIN #single-column-right-->

This continues to ~line 131 and ends with:

<!-- END #single-column-right-->

You will need to remove these tags and all the content in between. Do not forget the closing div tag.

Also in styles.css, line 437, you will see:

#single-column-left { float: left; width: 460px; background: url(images/bg-widget-title.gif) left top repeat-x; }

You will need to alter the width “460px” to fit your desired width.

How do I mark posts as featured?

To mark posts as featured, simply tag your selected post “featuredpost” without the quotes.
