Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

How to know what kind of problem you have?

1. Using the Chrome Console

Using the Chrome Console tool to check if there is something error on the page you’re viewing, it very useful to find js error.

To open the Console tab, use the keyboard shortcut Command+Option+J (Mac) or Control+Shift+J (Windows/Linux), then navigate to “Console” tab.

2. Checking the Plugin Problems

Deactivate all plugins you’re using one by one, or bulk deactivate all plugins then reactivate them one by one. Every time after activate/deactivate a plugin, you should check if the problem is still exists.

If you found a problem caused by the plugin, it’s possbile that:

  1. Plugin itself has problem: if so, you should contact the plugin author to fix it.
  2. Plugin conflicting with our theme: if so, contact us and I’ll try to fix it. Note: we just try to fix the problem that it caused the error, not make theme compatible with all plugins.

How to know if a plugin problem is “conflict” or “itself”? Switch the theme to default WordPress theme and check if the problem is still exists.

Do I need install and activate all recommended plugins?

Instead of include all plugins in download package, we listed all required and recommended plugins on “Appearance -> Install Plugins” page.

If a plugin is Required for a theme, you MUST install it.

BUT NO, if a plugin is just Recommended, means it’s optional, you DO NOT need to install and activate it, use a recommend plugin only when you need its feature.

How to add customization safely?

You can directly modify the theme file, but it’s not recommended. Because the new update of the theme will override your modification. To do customization safely, you should add your customization via the following methods.

Method 1: Child Theme

Method 2: Custom Files
This theme includes 3 files in “detube/custom” directory:

custom.php: for add custom php functions.
custom.js: for add custom javascripts.
custom.css: for add custom css code

Depending on your situation, you should move one of them to “detube” directory, it will working automatically, and the new update will not override it.

Method 3: Theme Options

Go to “Theme Options -> Hook Settings”, there are two fields”

Head Code: for inserting your code before the </head> tag
Footer Code: for inserting your code before the </body> tag

Note:Using this method, you should wrap your css code with </style> tag and wrap your js code with </script> tag.

It’s hard to list which files have been changed, if you really need to directly modify the theme files, you can use some file compare tools to help your find the differences between two versions, so you can merge your modified version to new update easier. (I used TortoiseSVN on Windows and Visions on Mac)
