Hi there! I’m almost decided to buy the theme. It’s probably a stupid question but I just wanted to be sure that there is a simple way of centring big images on the projects page with the text below it. I have this doubt since there is no way of customising the projects page on the test drive.

Thanks!

visualkicks

Hmm, I’m a little confused as to what you mean by that. Can you link me to the exact page you’re talking about in the demo?

Images within the fullwidth media section (ie gallery & standard post formats) are centred by default.

Hi Jesse, Great theme. I’m setting up and am trying to get my head around the structure but have a few questions.

Could you illustrate the portfolio-projects-page heirarchy? I’m being a but thick here but it’s not obvious to me. I’ve set up panel posts for the home page and included portfolios successfully but can’t seem to replicate this with a page. The uploaded images don’t show.

I can’t get the buttons to display. I’m using the button shortcode but nothing shows. I’ve disabled all non-visualkicks plugins too.

Best Andy

visualkicks

Hi Andy, thanks for the purchase!

The portfolio projects should be considered the same thing as blog post categories. It’s a taxonomy that helps group the portfolio posts up. Nothing more then that really. If you create a portfolio page you have the option of selecting to show project. But as for page hierarchy there isn’t really one.

In regards to the uploaded images, have the images been uploaded and attached to a post? Images in galleries and light-boxes wont display unless attached to the post. Im not sure if that’s the problem here that, I’ll need to see the page in question.

If you’d like me to take a look at the short-codes you can email me your username / password through our profile page.

Thanks Jesse, I think it’s clicked (Doooh!) May have got Buttons working – will get back to you if not Andy

Hi Jesse, My Visual Button not displaying problem is still an issue although it appears that the panel posts won’t display any links. I set up a standard text link and it won’t display. Is there a disable links setting on panel posts? Andy

Latest…if I create a link in a panel post them preview the page the link works. If I save panel and view it on the home page the links don’t work…

Hi Andy, you will need to send me the link to your site. I can’t fix or attempt to fix anything without seeing it first. If you want to send the link via email to avoid publishing the link in public, please do so through our profile page.

is there a way for email notifications to be sent to my email address when people leave comments? thank! love the theme btw.

visualkicks

All that kind of stuff is handled by core WordPress settings which can be found in Dashboard > Settings.

For comment notification emails I believe thats under the discussions tab.

I’ve translated the .po file to nl_NL.mo. I’ve uploaded this file to the theme root, but this is not working. I’ve working with a child theme folder. Where should I place the translated files?

visualkicks

Hi Robbert,

I’ll give you the same advice as a previous commentator in regards to translating themes:

If you’re only translating the theme into a single language you can just add this to your functions.php http://snippi.com/s/cdg58wg

This way you dont need to create any additional folders or mess with the wp_config. ie: leave default.mo in the root directory and simply let poedit save over the old files.

Also if you don’t want to add / remove things to your functions.php file to stay update safe – place all your custom functions into an empty plugin – http://d.pr/f/FRTl

Best Regards Jesse

ps. keep all files in the root theme not the child theme (.mo etc)

Hi, Just purchased the theme, great work!

my website is www.envyprojekt.com

1) I have the portfolio on the main homepage, but when I click the ‘portfolio’ button from the menu, it shows the items in a blog format, and not a grid.

I want the portfolio button to show as a grid like the homepage, or better yet, just take me back to the portfolio on the homepage once clicked.

2) How do I modify the size of text headers, at the moment when I put a header it takes up the whole page so I removed it.

Thank you

visualkicks

Hi and thanks for the purchase!

1) You need to create a portfolio page. Heres how – create a new page > call it whatever you want > set the page template as portfolio.

At the moment you’re just linking to the custom post type that is called ‘portfolio’. Meaning the site doesn’t know what to do with the information being shown.

Also why not just make the portfolio page your homepage? You can set your front (home) page in settings > reading.

2) You can use custom css to reduce the font size of the titles. Copy and past (and adjust accordingly) into theme settings > custom css. http://snippi.com/s/n93zvbp

Thanks a lot works great. Just a few brief questions

1) Is it ok to upgrade to Wordpress 3.8 or would we have to wait for a theme update before upgrading?

2) Also on my site, I have added a custom Logo, but the main menu to the right doesn’t line up properly. The menu sits a little lower, any way to adjust this for a custom logo? so both the logo and menu are level with each other?

visualkicks

1) I’ll be putting a new theme out hopefully by new years and then after that dimple is getting a nice big patch. 3.8 will be checked and tested extensively. I did do a quick 5 minute check the other day and it seems to be fine, it’s your call though. You can’t go backwards to 3.7 though if something does pop up.

2) Give this a try http://snippi.com/s/3d87dy9

3) You may want to clean up the default widgets in the main sidebar http://d.pr/i/Az39

Hi visualkicks,

I love your theme. Where’s the PSD included like other themes so we can create our design templates?

Thanks!

visualkicks

Hey & thanks for the purchase!

With the nature of responsive design and the efficiency of coding programs these days I only use photoshop to create base layouts. All the intricacy of the site are made on the fly via code. Meaning unfortunately there are no PSD files for dimple.

Be sure to check item details before purchasing, not all themes come with PSDs. A well known theme that didn’t come with PSD files until recently was Enfold.

Also, can you add the VIDEO BACKGROUND funtionality in alternative to Parallax/Image/Solid background? That would be awesome already!

Keep it up!

visualkicks

There are plans to add this in, I wont say wether it will happen, but we are looking into if it is viable.

Thanks for the reply Jesse! Hope you can add the video background.

Jesse, for the slideshow, can we change the transition from PUSH to FADING? Thanks!

visualkicks

Hi, you will need to edit code directly. All the sliders animations are kept in format-gallery.php under the slider gallery section. The panel slider CANNOT have a fade animation though, it must remain as slide or the height will be wrong for each panel.

Hi, i bought the template and i don’t know how to have the exact copy of the “minimal” Dimple… i took 3 days to know how to do it but i didn’t found

visualkicks

Hi there & thanks for the purchase!

If you go into the minimal demo test drive you will see all the settings on the demo. You can just copy those settings. It takes around 2 minutes to go through and make your site have the same settings. It’s important to note there are no preset versions or skins. Just variations of settings.

As for the pages and the portfolio items, you can always install the demo content that comes with the theme.

We have some problems when opening the website on a mobile android device. See the screenshot in this link: http://nl.tinypic.com/r/2it5suh/5

We didn’t change anything in the meta viewport and scale tags. Can you help us out with this?

Kind regards.

visualkicks

Hi Robbert,

Thanks for this, ill add a fix to the next patch (which will be scheduled after new years). Was this an actual screenshot from a android device or just a generated photo from a services like browser snaps? If it was a browser snaps photo, there might not be to much that can be done.

This was the actual screenshot on an android device. I’m looking forward to the update.

Hi Jesse, I promise only a few more questions and I should be set. Is there a way to reduce the spacing above and below the portfolio page’s title filters? http://cornerhousephotography.com/wedding-2/

Thank you =)

Default-user

For the blog, is there a way to reduce the spacing below the title and where the pictures/text begin?

visualkicks

Hey,

1) This will alter the padding on all pages and posts for the title area – http://snippi.com/s/ey01qft

2) filter gaps – http://snippi.com/s/rkgp309

Best Regards & Happy New Years J

Default-user

Thank you J… is it possible to reduce the spacing of the blog title and where the post begins? The snippi didn’t work for the blog page: http://cornerhousephotography.com/blog-3/

visualkicks

Hmm, have you not changed anything with the markup or directly in the style.css?

I think the best thing for me to do is teach you how to change things yourself as your site has been modified quite significantly overtime. The snippets I give to other people wont always work for you.

Lesson 1 – Inspect element: If you’re not using google chrome you should consider making the switch. Although firefox will work to. Right click somewhere on the site that you want to change > inspect element. This will will bring up the developer console. Here you can view the html markup in the left and the styles effecting the current element on the right. All you need to do is change those settings on the right and it will update in real time. Then once you’re happy take the parts you changed and place them into your custom css area like usual. http://d.pr/i/Q0Sn

Lesson 2 – Design From a design point of view, keep in mind a design that is easy on the eye is one that HAS a good amount of padding between items. Try not to strip so much of it out. Otherwise you will confuse people about where they should be looking first and last. Lastly, don’t be afraid to make the user scroll down, scrolling down is one of the first actions users will do when visiting a new page.

Obviously the titles and paddings on the demo might not be to your taste, but there is no mistake about where the user is mean to be looking at. http://d.pr/i/YiPl

Best Regards Jesse

Thank you Jesse!!! I appreciate you taking the time to answer all of my questions and provide an overview of how to work with coding. Thank you so much!!! Happy Holidays!!!

Hi Jesse, I have been able to pick up on a lot from your instructions. I am finding after roaming through every script and doing a large amount of trial and errors that I cannot make the bottom panel border to be 0 px… would you check it out on the home page? You can see that several of the panels have a white line while others do not. Thank you for all of your help and happy new year!

visualkicks

Hmm, looks like it’s your wpstats plugin (it puts a little smily face at the bottom of the page) http://d.pr/i/Gmeg. You can either disable the plugin or hide the image with:

img#wpstats { display: none; }

Best Regards J

Default-user

Thank you Jesse, the code was able to remove the smiley face, but the white line on the bottom of many of the panels is still showing. The line is above the footer widgets about about a 1/2” below the panel picture, almost as though it is a panel bottom border.

Happy New Year!

Default-user

Ps. I am finding that password protect does not always work on portfolios or pages. Sometimes the enter password box appears and sometimes it will allow you to see the page/portfolio. Do you know how to fix this issue?

visualkicks

That smiley face appears to be back, did you remove the custom css?

img#wpstats { display: none !important; }

I’ll need to take a look into that password protect issue.

J

Default-user

Hi Justin, removed the smiley face now. However the white strip at the bottom of each panel is still showing (before the footer widgets begin). Thank you for looking into the password protect issue. It does work sometimes, just not other times. Or it will show all of the information on the page and ask for me to enter a password at the same time. Let me know about the white space when you have a sec! Thank you as always!!!

visualkicks

Because you’re using a single background you could apply it once only.

The copyright section background applies to the entire page (as it’s the last section), so if you remove the backgrounds from all the sections & panels. Then apply your background to the to the copyright section the white areas of the page wont be white any more and everything will look the same.

Is there any way to display the new portfolio items in a widget? Currently I only see one for the blog posts. Please advise how I can do this.

visualkicks

Hi Kally,

Wordpress comes with a number of core widgets packaged with it. Recent blog posts is one of these. If you want to have the same widget but for portfolio posts (a custom post), you will need to speak to a developer about making that for you. It wouldn’t take anymore then 30 minutes to an hour if they have made Wordpress plugins before.

Hi. I love the theme.

My site is www.beccorszag.com

I’m having a lot of trouble setting up a portfolio. No matter what options I select I am stuck with the one layout, my images go tiny, and they open to a new page instead of an enlarged version… http://www.beccorszag.com/portfolio-project/studio-works/ I want my portfolio to function be like the demo here http://demo.visualkicks.com/dimple/minimal/portfolio/a-hike-through-dover/

Hi Jesse Happy new year! Just wondering how its going? I feel like I’m missing something that should be obvious. I’ve reinstalled the theme to make sure it wasn’t that and it’s still the same. I’d already upgraded to the latest Wordpress before installing the theme so I don’t know if that may be contributing to the issue?

Becc

visualkicks

Hi Becc,

Happy new years! Sorry for the delay, im not back into the thick of it again. Re the site, the portfolio page for some reason kept thinking it was an archive page. Any way, I fixed it but deleting the old one and creating a new one.

Re the images, I made a little guide to get you on the way. Images need to be uploaded to a post (attached). I updated the first portfolio post you had to reflect this. http://d.pr/i/Snjh

Also, I’d recommend not using the portfolio projects taxonomy. Instead use the filters one. The projects is meant for creating multiple portfolio pages.

Thanks so much Jesse! Working much better now.

Is there a way to customize the page title text? I want it left aligned, lower case and possibly a different font.

visualkicks

In the customizer you can change the fonts and also make headings lowercase. http://d.pr/i/H3Aa

As for the left aligned you can do that with this bit of custom css. Copy and paste this into the custom css area in “Dashboard > Theme Settings” http://snippi.com/s/qwhlh3k

Just a word of warning, that left align in the header may cause some problems for other areas of the site. It’s not a very elegant solution and you might be better of leaving it centred. Up to you though.

Of course, I couldn’t see it for looking thankyou!

A few more questions:

1. How to change the padding on the footer?

2. Is it possible to make the image caption text smaller that shows up when using a light box? And is there a way to make it float below the image, when the screen is resized it goes on top of the image, not a great thing. Also isn’t there ment to be a ‘x’ button to exit the light box along with the keyboard symbol?

3. The gallery is being funny again. I have it perfectly set up how i want it but depending on the way it is accessed it changes. Eg, if the ‘gallery’ button in the main menu is clicked directly, all galleries show up, you can select which gallery you want via the thumb nail, then view the images using the lightbox. This is perfect. But…..if you hover over the ‘gallery’ button in the main menu, and access each gallery via the drop down menu and sub menu etc, which i need to order them, the gallery format is completely different. I don’t really know what it is doing, it looks like a post, kind of like the initial problem I was having. I have also changed all the galleries from ‘portfolio projects’ to ‘portfolio filters’ like you suggested.

4. Is it possible to use panels on more than one page, and pick and choose which ones go on which page? I can only find a ‘select all panels’ button.

Thanks again Jesse, sorry for all the questions, I’m learning as i go along :)

Default-user
tikkah Purchased

Oh, one more question…

The ‘Edition’s portfolio when accessed via the main menu is also displaying wrong…..

visualkicks

1) You will need to use custom css to edit that.

2) Yes there should be. I’ll look into that I took a look and it liks like a bug that needs fixing. (Font awesome updated and changed their syntax which broke icons on the site – we must of missed that one)

3) i’ve skipped this to address it below in number 5

4) Unfortunately no, all panels will be displayed on home page templates. We may look at changing that in the future but only 1 or 2 people have needed to do something like that. We would rather simplify then complicate.

5) There seems to be a bit of confusion here and it’s in regards to the taxonomies. You can’t link directly to ANY portfolio taxonomy / archive etc. The taxonomies are not setup to handle that. Each portfolio page needs it’s settings in check and taxonomy archives have no way of setting them. http://d.pr/i/AQg8 http://d.pr/i/ksK

So, lets forget everything I have ever said and ill just go in and change it. Now I’ve created a new gallery page (it’s in the menu). Heres how the filters are meant to be setup. http://d.pr/i/FUrq

This makes it much easier for your users and also for you to manage your portfolio. If you ever want a second portfolio page, only then would you need to use the porfolio-project taxonomy.

So in saying that, you may want to think about removing all the unneeded menu items as linking to those taxonomies is a bad idea. http://d.pr/i/ooGt

hi again ;)

I hope there’s an easy fix for this one. How do I change the order that the portfolio filters are displaying on the gallery page? I have chronological filters and they are displaying in the page title area as 2013, 2014, 2012 etc looks alittle ridiculous

http://www.beccorszag.com/gallery-2/
visualkicks

Ahh, that’s a much harder problem. The filters are placed onto the page as each portfolio item is added to the page. So on your first portfolio post it has both 2014 and 2013. It will place 2013 before 2014 because it’s numerically before.

Same reason studio appears in the middle of them all. You may need to get in contact with a developer who can either make changes to the php in the file OR a javascript developer who can re-arrange the buttons after the page loads.

I’ll think about maybe add some other way of sorting them in an up coming patch but for now it is what it is unfortunately.

Hi Joachim,

Hello, Dimple is really really cool. The best portfolio template I’ve seen among hundreds I’ve been looking for on the net

Don’t know if it has been mentioned before but Dimple is crashing iphone 4/4S Safari (Dunno if it does the same to iPad or the iPhone 5). It is an awesome template but I didn’t buy it just for that reason. Do we expect a fix for that? And when?

Thank you!

visualkicks

Hi, thanks for the that. We regularly check on a number of devices, last we checked everything was tip top, so we will obviously need to check again.

One of the main causes of mobile crashing on iOS devices is to do with -webkit-backface-visability. As such we include an option to turn this off in the theme customiser. It seams to solve most peoples issues.

Hi there I am really happy that you have made this great template – such a great and flexible design. There is only one thing I would like to alter – how do I delete the # sign before image captions showing below portfolio gallery images? http://julieboserup.com/portfolio/from-where-im-calling/

Thanks for any help on this! Anna

Default-user

Oh, and can I style the image caption text some how with html?

Default-user

especially a smaller font size.

visualkicks

Hi Anna,

You can make the captions smaller by adding this to your custom css area in the theme settings of the dashboard

.caption p { font-size: 12px; }

As for the # you will need to remove that manually, you will need to open clipboard/theme/theme-functions.php and remove the hash from line 456.

Hi there! Great theme. Just one quick question for you. I’m attempting to choose a different thumbnail crop than the featured image, and I select the radio button “Apply changes to: Thumbnail” and save it. The preview updates with the crop i’ve made, however when I look at the main “portfolio” page, the crop is not changing. It remains the default crop. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks in advance.

Default-user

Here’s a link to some screenshots if that helps better explain my issue:

http://imgur.com/a/165h4

Thanks!

visualkicks

So basically, Wordpress’s image editing capabilities are generally only usable with images that are placed into the content window.

Reason being theme authors need to have control over the size of the image that is used for featured images. Themes generally have predefined image sizes that Wordpress will automatically crop to when a new image is uploaded. In the case of dimple the image sizes are http://d.pr/i/X9tG

So if you have a portfolio page with ‘squared’ masonry the theme will grab the featured imaged cropped at 500×500. Because theme authors have no real way of accounting for custom cropped images (unless they build a plugin that handles it) it will just grab the preset image size.

Solution: upload your featured images pre-cropped at 500×500 or 605 x unlimited.

Jesse

Default-user

Gotcha. Thanks Jesse. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Default-user

I just thought of a work around for this issue that I thought I’d share and see if it makes sense to you. So another solution for having a different thumbnail then the feature image would be to use the “gallery” format when creating a portfolio post and checking “dont include feature image” , and then posting the desired featured image in the gallery. This way you can have a square crop thumbnail without having to make the feature image square as well.

visualkicks

Well it’s kind of the same deal in the way that your actual image isn’t square anyway. You don’t need to upload a square image, Wordpress just crops it as square as long as it’s dimensions are greater then needed. Im also kind of confused as to what you’re trying to achieve. to you have a link?

Jesse

Default-user

That makes sense. I was able to achieve the desired effect with your help. Thank you!

How do I set up the sliders to show up on my homepage like how it is on my demos? I want the recent posts to show up. If recent posts cannot be automised, we can just update it manually. Here’s the link to the site, it’s still under construction: http://glyphfiction.com/

visualkicks

Hi Mathew,

Once you create your home page, make sure you set the page template to “home”. After changing the page template, you will see a list of settings / options that you use to set up the page.

The home page slider is made up of panels. (panels in list style – http://demo.visualkicks.com/dimple/standard/ & panels in slider style http://demo.visualkicks.com/dimple/standard/home-panel-slider-w-footer/)

So, for each ‘slide’ you want create a panel post & set a featured image. Slide panel creation cannot be automated. They are just like regular posts / portfolio posts.

Hi Jesse, It’s not very simple to understand the construction and difference of portfolio/project/filter/categorie… I’m lost… I would like to create two galleries : - the first : parent ‘A’ with children ‘B’ and ‘C’ - the second : parent ‘D’ with children ‘E’, ‘F’, ‘G’ and ‘H’ In fact, like your standard demo… I tested a lot of combinaisons but I didn’t find what I want… Can you help me ? PS : sorry for my english, I’m french :)

Hi there,

It goes like this.

Portfolio Project "parent a"
Portfolio Filters " 1, 2, 3, 4, 5"

Portfolio Project "parent B"
Portfolio Filters " 1, 2, 3, 4, 5"

Then create two pages with page template set to “portfolio”. Then on your first page set the project to “only display ‘parent a’. And again on the second page set the project to “only display ‘parent b’.

The filters are aesthetic only and do no effect the hierarchy. They just allow for the filters on the page to be pressed.

Let me know if that makes sense,

Jesse

Hey again,

I made a bit of a diagram for you. http://d.pr/i/fant If you want to apply a filter to a portfolio post, you do it in the same way you add categories to blog posts http://d.pr/i/VAzb

In regards to the slider ALL images uploaded to the post will be used in the slider. So for background images, upload them via “Dashboard > Media”. This way they are not uploaded (attached) to the post. http://d.pr/i/vyuZ
