Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Where are the documentation files?

The documentation files are provided in HTML format inside a folder called “Documentation” that is included with your purchase. You’ll need to download the “main files”, unzip them and you’ll find the docs right in there!

How do I upload Sample Data

When you go to download your purchase click on Download->Main files. After this folder downloads, unzip it and locate the folder called “SampleData”.

Within this folder you will find your sample data file(s).

To install your WordPress sample data log into your WP install and browse to Tools->Import and follow the instructions.

After the import is complete you should have all the posts/pages from the demo with dummy images.

There are certain things a WP import can not do, so after uploading sample data

  • Go to Appearance->Menu to set your menu locations.
  • Go to Appearance->Widgets to add your widgets (widgets aren’t included in a WordPress export)
  • Set your homepage at Settings->Reading using the “Home” page as a static page.
  • Go to Appearance->Theme Options to setup your theme options.

How Can I update the theme?

You have many options..here are some:

3. You can re-download the theme and override the files via FTP.

How do I first setup my homepage?

Your homepage must be set with the “Home” template.

  • Create a new page
  • Select the “Homepage” template
  • Publish
  • Browse to Settings -> Reading
  • For “Front page displays” select “A Static Page”
  • Choose the page created earlier “Posts page:” can be left blank (best) because you can create your blog * page using the “Blog” template.
  • Go to Appearance -> Theme Options to edit your homepage options.

Where is the theme admin panel located?

To access your theme options panel simply log into your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance->Theme Options. Here you will find all the different settings for your theme.

How do I add my blog page?

We include a blog template with the theme. To create your blog page simply create a new regular page then select the Blog template.

If it doesn’t work, make sure under Settings -> Reading the option for “Posts page” is set to nothing. Otherwise it can conflict.

How do I fix 404 Errors?

If you are getting any 404 errors on your site most the time it can be fixed by re-saving your permalink settings.

Go to Settings->Permalinks and click the save button

How do I setup my contact page?

For our themes we generally just use some shortcodes to create a new contact page layout. You would get this if you upload the sample data, otherwise it’s not hard to re-create or make your own fancy contact page using the included shortcodes.

The contact form itself is not built-in. Contact forms shouldn’t ever be built-into a theme. That said, we provide support for a great free plugin called “Contact Form 7”. So we recommend you download and use this one: http://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7/

To add your map at the top like the demo, simply insert your Google Map shortcode in the metabox that reads “Above Page Content”.

How can I create unlimited sidebars a.k.a have different widgets on different pages?

Some people add unlimited sidebar functions built-into their themes, but I like to keep my themes as bloat-free as possible. There are already some great plugins out there for this. Here are a few to choose from:

How can I make the blog previews on the homepage flush left and extend to the end and take up that full area?

You can do this via adding some custom CSS to your site:

How do I correctly update to version 3.0+ ?

When updating to version 3.0 you will have to reset the theme options panel. You do this by going to Appearance->Theme Options and clicking the reset button on the bottom left. I strongly suggest you keep a second window open with the theme panel options before resetting (so 2 windows open with your options) then click reset on one of them. That way you can quickly copy/paste your options over to the new theme panel.

How can I decrease padding between menu items to make room for more?

The custom CSS would look something like this:

Add this code to your site using a child theme, the custom css field in the admin panel or using a custom CSS plugin then tweak the 15px number to fit your needs.

How do I update the included plugins?

Whenever I update a plugin I will make mention of it on the changelog. All the plugins are found in the theme’s plugins folder. So if you download the latest version and extract it you’ll see a folder called “plugins” and all the most recent plugin zips in there. Simply delete the plugin from your site and re-upload or extract and override the files via FTP (easier).

If the plugin hasn’t been updated yet and you require the update send me a private message and I will zip it over.

Important: The easiest way to update is by updating your theme, all the plugins will be updated within the theme. Then delete the plugin from your site. You should then see the notice again to install it at the top of the dashboard and install it. Why Can’t I Activate/Validate The LayerSlider or Visual Composer Plugins?

Very simply put…you can’t because you didn’t buy it.

The way it works on ThemeForest is when a plugin is included for free with a theme you can use the plugin for free without any issues, but if you want update and support from the plugin developer you need to purchase it separately (optional).

The plugin will work just 100% without the purchase code (license) and if you ever need to update it please see this FAQ entry regarding updating plugins.

If you can not activate the plugin, this is NOT an issue and you shouldn’t be worried. The plugins included will work even without a purchase code entered. The license key is ONLY for automatic updates and support directly from the plugin developer.

How can I order my Events in the WordPress dashboard by start date?

Why cant I automatically update the Visual Composer Plugin by WPBakery?

Auto update notices in the admin are generally for Free themes/plugins hosted on WordPress.org. However, some developers add their own system, as I have for my Earth theme and the Visual Composer Extension plugin. Or via the Envato Toolkit plugin using your user API key.

Why not for the Visual Composer? Simply put, because you didn’t buy it. Because the plugin is included for free with the theme I can’t legally offer automatic updates for it because that would involve hosting it on a 3rd party server which violates ThemeForest licensing.
