Hey Onioneye,

Thanks for the quick response. I bought the theme about a month ago, I’m pretty sure it’s up to date. The categories I’m talking about are the ones displayed under the portfolio preview images, but I was hoping to also include them in a drop down menu. I’m probably missing something simple, I just haven’t been able to put my finger on it. Anything you can tell me to help me out would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Hey there,

you are very much welcome. The portfolio items are filtering properly on my local machine, and on the demo site, so my best advice for you is to ditch the current theme folder, if you haven’t modified any code, and install a fresh copy of the theme, which you can download from ThemeForest.

Sincerely,

OnionEye

Hi again OnionEye,

I just replaced the theme with a fresh copy and I am still having the same problem. Maybe I’m missing a step, I’ve created the portfolio category i.e. illustrations, photo editing etc, and assigned it to particular portfolio items that apply to that category. Is there anything else I should be doing to get the filter to work?

onioneye

Hey there,

Can you please check if there is a taxonomy.php file in the theme’s root folder? Also, please try temporarily disabling your plugins to see if that works.

By the way, please respond to your own threads. It makes it easier for me, and for other people, to keep track of the comments. You can do that by hitting the reply button, found at the end of the first comment in the thread.

Very interested in this theme. Is it possible to disable everything below the words “A nice looking headline telling something about you & your work.” on the home page. I want a very simple home page and this is similar to what im looking for. Is this possible?

onioneye

Hey there,

thanks for taking an interest in the Echo theme. :)

This is your lucky day. You have two options in the Theme Options panel, for disabling both the “Latest Projects” and the “Latest Articles” sections on the homepage, so you don’t have to touch a single line of code to achieve this.

Best of luck whatever you decide to do!

Hi Onioneye!!

Love the theme!

I am trying to space out my menu items with CSS . I have figured out how to do this but what I really need to get exactly what I want is to space them separately, and I am having trouble doing so. Basically I want to center my menu items but need to space the two in the center more than the rest because they surround the logo. Can you help me?!

THANKS !

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you love the theme! Thanks for buying it! :)

Please have a look at the source code to see what id’s WordPress gives out to the menu’s li elements. Once you do that, you can use those id’s for styling the specific menu items with CSS .

Quick question: I want to make sure you can have multiple portfolios in this? Looks like it from the demo, but I want to confirm. I need to have a unique landing page/grid for each category.

Also, I’m seeing something strange when I hover over the different options in the pull-down. My window will occasionally flicker black for a second. I’m in Chrome—just wondering if you’ve seen that?

Thanks—great theme!

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you find the theme great! Thanks for taking an interest in it! :)

You can have multiple portfolios by putting the categories in the menu, like Illustration, Print, Design etc., so when they are clicked, only the items that belong to a certain category will be shown.

As far as the flicker is concerned, try removing the frame, and looking at the site again. The ThemeForest frames are known to cause uncontrollable stuff like that, so you need to remove them for every theme, to see how a website really behaves and looks like.

How do I get each of these portfolio pages (in the Our Work pulldown) to lead to a grid of just one category?

http://hazencreative.com/wordpress/

I have categories for each of the 6 things in the pull down, and expected I could have each portfolio page pull things from the corresponding category. Will each of the portfolios be an Archive of that category then? Sorry—just not sure how it should work.

Thanks!

onioneye

Have you got this to work? As far as I can see, by visiting your site, you did. :)

Hazen
Hazen Purchased

Well—luckily, the Archive template was the layout I wanted to use for my portfolio pages (4 column, no sidebar) so I just made each separate “portfolio” into a category archive.

Everything else is working great! I’m really loving it. And thanks for your help.

Can I ask one last little thing? I tried to change it so it didn’t say “my_portfolio” in the address up top when you’re on an individual portfolio post. But it didn’t work. I just want it to say “portfolio”. Where do I need to change it to make that work? I thought I found all the instances but it didn’t change—does that template filename need to change too?

Thanks again!

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you got it all working and that you are loving the theme! :)

In order to rewrite the URL of the portfolio custom post type, you need to modify the rewrite argument of the $args array, found in the of_portfolio_register function, that’s in turn found in the custom-post-type.php file.

For further information, please use google and refer to this page: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/register_post_type

BTW , in case anyone digs deep enough in this looking for an answer to how to change “my_portfolio” in the permalink/address, you change the line OnionEye mentions to:

‘rewrite’ => array( ‘slug’ => ‘portfolio’ ),

And done!

Excellent. Thanks for the info on the multiple portfolios. Sounds great.

I actually was viewing the site with the frame off, and just tried again. The black flicker is still happening. Just when moving from one hover state to another in the portfolio pull down menu. Does it have something to do with the enlarging rollovers?

onioneye

Probably not a huge deal since it’s o.k. in the other browsers, but thought I’d share.

Thanks again for your quick responses!

Yep, definitely seems like a small chromum bug on a mac with CSS3 transforms and transitions.

I investigated a bit, and found out that chromium sometimes has quite some issues with flickering on a mac:

Thanks for the info. One last question: is there a Template for a regular page? It’s not listed in your features. Not a full-width, but just a page of text with a sidebar?

Thanks!

onioneye

You are very much welcome! :)

You don’t need any templates for that. Just save the page, without assigning any templates to it, and you should be fine.

hi onioneye,

love the theme.

i am making a portfolio site that requires the work to be sorted into categories. for example, i have a main nav title called “work” and under “work” i have “reliefs,” “figures,” “etc.” when i click on reliefs, i would like only the reliefs to show.

advice?

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you love the theme! Thanks a lot for buying it! :)

Please assign your portfolio items to the portfolio categories. Once you are done with that, go to the Menus tab, where you will need to check the checkbox for the portfolio categories in the top-right corner of your screen, under the Screen Options tab. After that is done, just include the categories in the menu, and you should be good to go! :)

thanks, onioneye… no luck though. i put the site together in two places and it works successfully in one.

noelcunningham.me (it is working here. the menu sorts and pages work fine)

copskey.com (where i want it to work…. the pages do not sort into designated categories and for some reason when clicking on a portfolio image, it blinks excessively).

advice?

onioneye

So it works on one site, but not on the other. Please try emptying your trash, in case this has been causing some sort of a conflict in the theme. Also, try resetting the permalinks to see if that works.

Default-user

I finally figured it out! Basically, under the menu I had categories created and designated to each portfolio piece. The problem was that I did not drag the actual portfolio cateogories onto the menu, I had the pages instead. This problem is has been resolved!

But, I have one final question! Is there a way to make “About” in the menu of this page unclickable so only sub categories on the menu are clickable? http://www.copskey.com/

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you solved your issue! Congrats! :)

As far as you question is concerned, just make a custom link under the menus tab, with a label of “About” and a href value of ”#.” Once you are done with that, just replace the original “About” link, with the new one, that you just made, and you should be good to go. :)

Best of luck,

Hello. I’m really liking the theme. However, I have seen many people ask the question about portfolio images not resizing properly. I, too, am having this issue. I have changed all of my permissions and checked and double-checked that I had done everything correctly. Here is a link to the page in question:

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

onioneye

Hey there,

glad you are liking the theme! Thanks for buying it! :)

The following is stated in the documentation:

...this is why we recommend you upload images that are greater than 660 pixels in width, if you’re going to pick the layout for the portfolio page that has one, or two columns, because that’s where the images of larger width are displayed.

I suggest you upload images that are at least 665 pixels wide, for the portfolio, if you’re going to stick with the same template. Once you do that, everything should work fine.

Sincerely,

OnionEye

Default-user

My images are either 750 or 1024 pixels wide. All well over 660,

onioneye

then it’s quote possible that your server is getting in the way of resizing the images properly. Please read the “Image resizing” section of the docs, and follow the directions there, except for the ones found in the “Permissions Of Dynamic Files That Contain Your Theme’s Javascript And CSS ” subsection.

Default-user

I did all of that.

onioneye

Can you please contact your host to see if your server configuration is somehow the cause of this?

Default-user

Ok. I am awaiting a reply from Dreamhost.

Is it strange that it is resizing my images correctly for the ‘view projects’ section on my home page but not resizing for the slider or the portfolio page?

I appreciate your help.

onioneye

Quite honestly, I’m not sure. Let’s see what the guys at DreamHost are going to say first, and then we’ll discuss it further. Just don’t be worried; we’ll definitely make this work. ;)

Default-user

Reply from Dreamhost:

The script needs GD Library installed with PHP . Some servers also have mod_security settings that can impede it.

GD is available for PHP scripts to use. It’s not recommended that mod_security be disabled for the domain, but it may be, if you see issues there, until the developer can provide a version of their script that performs its tasks securely.

Here are the server requirements that I am told I must meet. I have done the CHModding, but not sure about the library etc.

Your theme comes with a built in image resizing script called “TimThumb”. This script handles the automatic resizing of images throughout your theme. If you’re are having trouble with the script, for instance, if images you have defined for your portfolio gallery aren’t loading, go through the following troubleshooting tips:

1). Does your cache folder have the correct permissions?

You need to give your: /wp-content/themes/echo/cache/ folder full permissions. In most cases this is “777”, but it may vary depending on where you are hosted. If 777 does not work, try 755. It is recommended that you contact your host, to find out what permissions to use, if you are not sure. Setting permissions is also known as CHMODing, and can be done using most FTP programs and hosting control panels.

777 is not recommended because it gives anyone on the server the ability to use that directory. 755 should work for your scripts to be able to use it.

2). Does the ?le “timthumb.php” have the correct permissions?

Make sure the following file has the correct permissions needed for your server: /wp-content/themes/echo/timthumb.php. In most cases this is “644”, but it may vary depending on where you are hosted. If 644 does not work, try 755 or 777.

Please make sure that file is set to 644. There’s no reason to allow other users the ability to alter the file since the web server runs with the effective permissions of your user (suexec).

3). Does your server have the GD library compiled with its version of PHP ?

This script requires the GD library to be installed. If your thumbnails are not working, check with your host to make sure that you have it.

Yes.

4). Does your server have mod_security settings that are impeding the scripts functionality?

Some servers may have mod_security settings that will stop the script from working. You should always contact your host to make sure your server is not holding the script from working.

I’m not seeing security entries regarding the script in the logs.

Permissions Of Dynamic Files That Contain Your Theme’s Javascript And CSS

Your theme comes with three files that are updated whenever you change something in the theme options panel that is related to the javascript and the CSS of the theme. If you don’t see any changes to the theme when you update something under the “Typography”, “Slider”, “Pretty Photo Lighbox”, or “Styling Options” tabs in the options panel, check if the following files have the correct permissions:

theme-functions.php (/wp-content/themes/echo/admin/ directory) custom.php (/wp-content/themes/echo/styles/ directory) jquery.pretty.photo.options.php (/wp-content/themes/echo/js/ directory) jquery.slides.slider.options.php (/wp-content/themes/echo/js/ directory) You need to give these files full permissions. In most cases this is “777” but it may vary depending on where you are hosted. If 777 does not work, try 755.

Please use 755. 777 is never advisable on a shared server, as it opens you up to exploits. I hope this helps. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Thanks! Ryan C

Default-user

It seems like the script is working sometimes. If you look on my “Work” page, the images are resized to 390×390 thumbnails. On the project pages themselves, the image is 660×9999.

It’s confusing me. Any thoughts?

Default-user

Is this correct? The 9999 part?

//else { if (has_post_thumbnail()) { $imgdata = wp_get_attachment_image_src(get_post_thumbnail_id(), ‘full-size’);

//if the width of the image doesn't exceed 660 pixels, show it in full width; otherwise, resize the image to 660 pixels in width
    if($imgdata[1] < $frame_width) {
        the_post_thumbnail('full-size');
    }
    else {
?>
    <?php _e('Single Portfolio Item', 'echo'); ?>
<?php
    }
}
Default-user

I deleted the “9999” part of the code and it seems to be working.

But I have found another issue: “Fourth Portfolio Image” doesn’t work. The image doesn’t show in any post.

Thank You.

Default-user

There is a typo in line 72 of functions.php

It reads “forth” when it should read “fourth.”

So that fixed the problem of the fourth image not showing up.

onioneye

Wow, congrats on making the whole thing work completely by yourself! I sincerely doubt that even I, who made the theme, would be able to do it so fast.

It seems that the value of “9999” is sometimes a problem. The timthumb script should automatically adjust the height, but it unfortunately doesn’t, on some servers. Did you just remove the mentioned value from the arguments string, and left the height variable empty (“h=”)?

I’m going to update the theme straight away, so anyone else doesn’t experience the same problems in the future.

Thanks a lot! :)

hi onioneye:

i’m loving the theme, but have another question:

when i click on a portfolio thumbnail, the image pops up and blinks several times. see here: http://www.copskey.com/portfolio_categories/portraits/

i tested the theme through a different url and it works perfectly. i’d like for my thumbnail to load onto its own page on the click like it does here: http://noelcunningham.me/my_portfolio/figurative-7/

advice? thanks so much for your time. noel

onioneye

Hey Noel,

glad you are loving the theme! :)

You enabled the slideshow feature of the PrettyPhoto lightbox in the Theme Options panel, and since the slideshow speed is set to only 200 milliseconds, you get the “image blinking” effect, which is actually images transitioning from one to another.

The thumbnails will open in their separate pages if you click the “view project” link, but if you want the same behavior, when you click on the thumbnails, just disable the lightbox, under the “PrettyPhoto Lightbox” tab of the Theme Options panel.

i think this is seriously my last question:

i’d like to have a thumbnail image and then when you click on it, just one full image on the left hand side of the page (instead of 2). Right now I have two images because I have a “set a featured image.” If I remove the featured image, I lose the thumbnail, but if I remove the image from the post, the image comes up on the right hand side of the page instead of the left.

onioneye

Hey,

glad it worked! :)

The portfolio images are not made to be included like you are including them (via the content editor). If you want to change that, you are going to have to modify the PHP code in the single-my_portfolio.php file, found in the theme’s root directory.

Hey Noel,

the left column is reserved for the description of the portfolio item, while the right one is reserved for media such as videos and images, so you are going to have to modify the code a bit, just like I said in my previous comment.

As far as your problem goes, it is definitely due to your server’s configuration. Please contact your host and kindly ask them to turn the “allow_url_fopen” flag on. In case they say no, you’re going to have to do it the following way:

Open up your theme-functions.php file in the /wp-content/themes/echo/admin/ folder, and follow the instructions found on this page: http://dropdo.com/3gq/logo. Once you have finished editing the file, save it, upload the logo, and it should work.

I think the best solution would be to make a custom metabox, with a field where you would put the image for each of your pages. In the meantime – Ive tried 4 different calender plugins and each one negatively effects your theme in one way or another (slider images on top of each other, borders and social media buttons in the wrong place, etc etc) – can you (or anyone else?!) recommend a calender plug in that works with Echo? Thanks again

Hey there,

you are very much welcome! :)

Quite honestly, it seems really odd that all of the calendar plugins mess up the styles of the theme. Can you give me the names of the ones you tested?

Hey OE… So I found one that works completely whilst offering me all I need- most appropriately called Events Made Easy. The ones that didnt seem to work properly for me are: The Events Calender 2.0.3 Event Calender 3 Events Manager Events Calender

So no worries there- Events Made Easy is all good.

However- I have yet another Question- how would I show the Portfolio categories in the sidebar of the portfolio? At the moment it just gives me the blog categories.. Big thanks

Hey there,

glad the mentioned plugin is working for you. :)

As far as your question is concerned, try looking for a plugin/widget that is in charge of displaying the categories defined in the custom taxonomy.

Sincerely,

Thank you for the beautiful design. Is it possible to have more than 10 images per portfolio? I couldn’t find documentation for adding more images. Thanks for your help!

Hey there,

glad you find the theme beautiful! :)

sorry for the inconvenience this might cause you, but you need to login with the account, with which you bought the theme, and send me an email via the contact form on my profile page, or post your question here, if you want support.

Thank you for your understanding. :)

By the way, are you sure you are not on the wrong forum? It seems to me that you are talking about one of my other themes, and not Echo.

Sincerely,

Thank you for the reply.. I’m logged in but I think I posted in the wrong section. I purchased Equilibrium. I’ll try again.
