Hi Onion,

Great theme, i’m very much considering making the purchase. Please bear with me on my questions:

Is it possible in your theme to have full-width posts? I’m a photographer and I’d like to post projects and have the option of the post being wide, is that possible. (roughly 900 pixels).

If i wanted to remove “Latest Articles” initially while my blog grows, is that possible?

Also, in other themes I’ve used i’ve found that the square icon creator would squish my proportions of my featured images, particularly if they were wide images. Does yours have this issue?

Finally, would I have control of changing fonts if i needed? As well as the color of fonts and/or the website background color?

Thanks for answering my questions, beautiful work.

Well, hello there Brandon. :)

Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you like the theme. :)

As far as your questions are concerned, you’ll be glad to hear that everything you ask for is available in the theme options panel. It is packed with 100+ options, so everything you mentioned, and much more, is available for customization. Here’s a few screenshots, showing you some of the available options:

http://dropdo.com/1Lc/Echo_Options_PanelTypography http://dropdo.com/1Ld/Echo_Option_Panel_Homepage http://dropdo.com/1Le/Echo_Options_Panel_Slider http://dropdo.com/1Lf/Echo_Option_Panel_Styles

Oh, and the featured images on the homepage are resized to a certain width and height, based on the number of columns/items you choose to display. The theme uses the “TimThumb” script, which will resize the images nicely, without you having to worry that they’ll end up looking blurred or disproportioned.

BHillPhotos

Thanks a lot Onion Eye. That’s fantastic, thanks for the screenshots. So clarify for me if you can, where would i make the change to have full-width posts or pages? Is that in the Post editing itself or in your Theme Options tab?

Thanks, i may just not be seeing it clearly enough.

BHillPhotos

Additionally – one more question. Do you have any links of sites that have utilized your template? I’d be curious to see what people have done. I’m itching to make the purchase this week….

onioneye

If you want to have full width pages, you would pick the “full width” custom page template, when you’re editing the page, or making a new one. If, on the other hand, you want to have full width blog posts, you have the two following options in the theme options panel to utilize that functionality; namely: “Disable the Sidebar on the Blog Page?” and “Disable the Sidebar on Individual Blog Posts?” options under the “Portfolio & Blog” tab.

Oh, and nobody provided me with a link to the site using this theme, but a lot of people said that they like it, and have rated it with 5 stars.

BTW , to be honest, the current single portfolio item view, like the one you see here: http://onioneye.com/themes/echo/my_portfolio/design-is-in-details/ currently resizes images to 660 pixels, if they’re wider than that, but that should change in the next update, which should come fairly soon. :)

It makes me happy to see such a satisfied customer. I’m glad you like the theme. :)

P.S. Please take a minute of your time to rate it, if it’s not too big of a problem. Thanks! :)

Hey, my Themes tab doesn’t have an install feature. I’ve been trying to find out why this is for the past several hours and I’m starting to lose it! __ Please help.

onioneye

What version of WordPress are you running? There should be an “Install Themes” tab near the top of the screen, when you click on the “Themes” tab.

If that doesn’t work, there’s an alternative way to install the theme. Follow these steps to achieve that: unzip the echo.zip folder, and upload it to the /wp-content/themes/ directory on your server, using your ftp client. After that, the theme should be available for install under the Appearance»Themes tab.

Hello,

Firstly, thanks for the great theme! It looks fantastic. And considering my limited coding knowledge, I really appreciate how easy it was to set up and customize.

I am having a bit of problem with my portfolio though. When I click on any of the portfolio categories, a blank pages comes up.

If there is anyway you could assist me with resolving this issue I would REALLY appreciate it!

Thanks again for the wonderful theme!

onioneye

Hi!

Thank you for purchasing the theme! I’m really glad you like it. :)

You’ll be glad to hear that the theme has been updated to remedy the problem you mention. Luckily, it’s just a minor fix that involves a few lines of code, and it is the only problem reported so far. You should know that I invested a lot of time in testing the theme, so it should be the last one as well. :D

Because the fix only impacts one file, to avoid reinstalling the whole theme, just download the modified version of the file here: http://ge.tt/31KOfs9. After you have it on your hard drive, fire up your ftp client (filezilla, or whatever it is that you use to upload files to the server), and upload the file to the /wp-content/themes/echo/ directory, replacing the existing version of the file with the new one.

If you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me straight away, and you’ll get an answer ASAP . :)

P.S. I’m really glad you’re having an enjoyable time with the theme, and I wholeheartedly hope it stays that way. :)

Sincerely, onioneye

HELP …

onioneye

This minor problem has been remedied. Luckily, it’s just a fix that involves a few lines of code in one of the theme files (taxonomy.php), and it is the only problem reported so far. The theme has been throughly tested, so this should be the last one as well.

Here’s a link to the modified file, so you don’t have to download the theme again from ThemeForest: http://ge.tt/31KOfs9. Just place it in the /wp-content/themes/echo directory, and you should be good to go. :)

Good luck! ;)

BTW , how do you like the theme? :)

onioneye

Sorry for the inconvenience, but the link above contains a dot appended to it, so it doesn’t work. Try this one instead: http://ge.tt/31KOfs9

onioneye

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience, but it seems that I’ve flagged my own comment as inappropriate. One of the files (taxonomy.php) in the theme has been updated, and now the the whole theme works like a charm. :)

Please download the aforementioned file by following the link above, and upload it to the /wp-content/themes/echo/ directory on your server, to avoid downloading the theme files all over again, and reinstalling the theme.

Good luck and thanks for buying my product! ;)

Hi,

Thank you so much for the quick response! I was having trouble with Filezilla. I was able to connect to my hosting account, but then it wouldn’t let me open the content folder? Weird. So I just went directly to GoDaddy and overwrote the taxonomy file with the new one.

For some reason, now my site won’t load at all. Do you think the issue is temporary and it will come up again in a little while?

I have one other question. And it’s likely related to the fact that I am a wordpress newbie. But is it possible to make the page with the sliders my index page? Right now my Blog is.

Thanks again for your help! Really loving the theme. Just hope my site comes up soon. Eeek!

Sarah

**Update – I just went in to my hosting account and deleted the old theme. Now my site is working again and the taxonomy file fixed the issue with portfolio. Thanks so much!

onioneye

Glad to hear you sorted that issue out and that you’re loving the theme! :)

To answer your question: it’s certainly possible to have a page with the slider as your homepage. Please open up the documentation that came with the theme, and look under the “A Static Page As Your Front Page” section, where the steps for setting that up are outlined.

Hi,

I’m having a few problems with load times – for some reason it is taking forever for anything to load up? The server is ok, and the plugins I’ve included don’t seem to be making a difference either?

The only thing I can think is some of the features built in to the template, such as the google fonts and the jquery?

Can you help at all?

Thanks,

Rob

onioneye

The theme has been built to be highly flexible/extensible, meaning that if you disable a certain plugin in the theme options panel, the correspondent files used to run the plugin on the page are disabled as well, making the page load faster.

What plugins have you included on the page? Maybe that’s exactly what your problem is—too much plugins impacting the site’s download times. Anyway, to stop trying to guess what is slowing down your site, can you provide me with a link to it, so I can inspect it closely.

Promise it’ll take just a second or two, and you’ll get a solution! :)

Default-user

Thanks for your quick response. It doesn’t appear to be the plugins. You can see the site at http://wearebeard.com

From using Firebug it appears as though the request to load the page is what is taking the time, although I must admit the technical side confuses me so any help would be greatly appreciated!

onioneye

That’s a great example of a site that uses the Echo theme. Well done! :)

As far as the loading times are concerned, I don’t see any problems with it. Each of the page is not heavier than 1MB, and loads pretty fast at my place. If you’re still not satisfied, and want your users to experience even faster loading times, you should use the following plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/ It will cut down your loading times by a mile. :D I highly recommend it to anyone using this theme.

Default-user

I’ve now tried it on 3 different computers, with vastly differing results. My homepage can take up to a minute to load, which just doesn’t seem right?

Is there anything other than caching the page that can be done, as I’m going to have a lot of new visitors visit the site, and wp-cache is only good when people have visited the page before?

onioneye

That’s weird. It seemed fine yesterday, when I first visited it, but now it’s loading really slow. I can certainly say that this is definitely not a problem with the theme itself, since it is optimized to perform well.

Here’s a screenshot, showing you the total weight of you site, which is under a half a megabyte, and thus should load in a split second:

ScreenShot link

This is most likely an issue with your server or a WordPress plugin, since they are known to cause some troubles now and then. Now let’s try to identify the problem a bit more closely. Please answer the following questions:

  1. What hosting package are you using?
  2. Have you just bought it, or have you used it before?
  3. What version of php are you running?
  4. What WordPress plugins are activated in your WordPress admin panel?

Before answering the questions, try do disable all of your plugins, and then load the page, too see if they’re the ones responsible for slowing down your site.

Kind regards, onioneye ;)

Default-user

I’m not sure what version of php I’m running, but the the hosting package is one that I’ve used before for multiple sites. I’ve deactivated all of the plugins and this has made no difference either.

I also just installed a different theme and the site ran very quickly, which suggests it is something to do with the theme in my opinion. I’m finding this very frustrating as I can’t promote the site while it is working like this.

onioneye

I see that somebody has been changing the website’s source code. Am I right?

I decided to test the speeds of the sites using this theme. For example, one of my customers sites (http://blog.brandonhillphotos.com/) is loading in under 0.7 seconds, which is fast, and the one hosted on my server loads in 1 second, and besides that, at least one more person would complain if there was something really wrong with the theme. Moreover, the tests ran smoothly, but when I tried to test yours it just gave me an error, not specifying the details of the error itself.

My guess now is that there is some configuration on the server that’s conflicting with a certain function/s in the theme, and not letting the theme load properly. Did you check the php’s version on your server yet?

Default-user

The server is running PHP 5 .2.17 – is this ok?

Any changes to the source code were only to remove any items I didn’t need, and the site was running slowly before the changes were made too.

Thanks for your help so far on trying to sort this out, I realise it must be frustrating for you too!

onioneye

UPDATE

I now see that you’ve changed the theme, and put a custom page as a front page, but the “503 – Service Unavailable” error is still appearing, unlike in the other sites, when I test them. This proves that your server is the one to blame for this. Even though your current site or any other themes you had installed a couple of hours ago load faster than mine, something is definitely wrong with your server.

Contact your hosting agency straight away and ask them when the issue will be resolved, ‘cause your business is on the line here.

Note: the 503 Service Unavailable error is an HTTP status code that means the web site’s server is simply not available at the moment. This is usually due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server.

Default-user

That error isn’t appearing for me – where about’s are you finding it? Can you send a screenshot for me to see?

onioneye

It’s not appearing on the website itself, but on the online tools used to measure the site’s performance.

Have you contacted your hosting company yet?

Default-user

They have just responded with this…

‘Our systems team do upgrade the PHP versions as and when we are sure that the upgrade will not cause problems to customer sites. If you are getting error 503, this will point towards something else being the problem, can you advise when this error has been returned and I shall investigate the logs to see if they show anything that may assist us to diagnose and fix this problem?’

Again, this suggests that it is one of the theme scripts not compatible with the server?

onioneye

The current home page is your custom page, and not my theme, so it suggests otherwise because the 503 error is still present. I tested a couple of sites to make sure yours is the only one giving me this error and it really is. I also tried using different online tools to check your website’s speed and the speed of other site’s as well, and yours is the only one that returns the 503 error.

Here’s an example, so you can see for yourself: http://awesomescreenshot.com/08acugtdc http://awesomescreenshot.com/0e9cugw90 http://awesomescreenshot.com/0f4cuh5aa

Default-user

I’m sorry, but I think the 503 error is coming from the fact that the site is using the ‘maintenance mode’ plugin – if you try running it again now It shouldn’t show an error, but is still having the same problems…

onioneye

The Google Fonts Plugin that you have installed on your website seems to be slowing it down. Please deactivate it temporarily, so I can debug your website.

Default-user

Thats been switched off for you now.

onioneye

Would it be too much to ask for your WordPress login details, so I can closely debug everything? You can change your username and password right after I finish.

If you’re comfortable with that, please send me the login details at zlatan@onioneye.com

onioneye

UPDATE

Your MySQL version is seriously out of date. I tried to install a plugin that will help me identify the problem with the slow load times, but I got the following error: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0c5cumbf7

The 4.1.2 version of MySQL came out seven years ago, and you’re running an even older version of it. You should ask your hosting company to update it ASAP .

Default-user

Hi,

I’ve just sent you an email about this, as the MySQL isn’t out of date as suggested, and now the site isn’t working at all?!

Could you respond asap.

Hi, I love your theme! But… there’s a bug in Safari.

I noticed when I rollover the dropdown menus, the whole page flashes, on every rollover of a menu item. It’s like everything disappears/reappears instantly. If you have a fix for this, I’ll be buying your theme, but until then… no dice.

onioneye

what exact version of Safari are you running, and which operating system? I’ll fix everything immediately and provide the customers with an update. Also, you should know that the new update will cut down on loading times from 30-50% depending on how many images the site uses. :)

onioneye

OK, I’m back with an update: The menu, as suspected, works perfectly in Safari (version 5.0.5, windows 7 OS), so the only conclusion is that the background color flicker you mention is a mac specific bug. Can you tell me what exact color the background changes to, and maybe even provide me with a screenshot? I would be eternally grateful if you could do that for me. :)

Here’s a screenshot showing the proper display of the drop-down menu in Safari on a windows machine: http://dropdo.com/1Xs/echo-drop-down-menu

Default-user

I’m running Safari 5.0.5 (Mac) and it would be impossible to take a screenshot of the bug because it happens so fast. It’s like the entire interface disappears in a flash every time I roll over a sub menu item.

Default-user

Nevermind!! I just realized the bug was due to the Themeforest frame at the top of the window when previewing it live. When I closed it, it didn’t do it anymore. But this could be an issue as people who are testing it in Safari 5.0.5 might be seeing this too and think your theme is buggy.

OnionEye,

Got another question, i’m really interested in having a good photo blog, particularly in your blog setup – what kind of control do I have when it comes to the images vs. the thumbnails on the left?

Meaning, I’ll have each post include many images in the post. Can the main blog area feature the image in the abbreviated text section as well? Do I have that option? Or does it take the first image or featured image and turn it into a square thumbnail?

OR, additionally can remove the square thumbnails on the left and have images in the abbreviated text section?

Thanks, hope i make sense.

onioneye

I understand that you want to invest your money in a quality theme, that satisfies your needs, and that’s why I’m happy to answer every single question you’ve got. :)

The post thumbnails can be disabled by just not setting the featured image, but for it to appear in the “abbreviated text area,” you would have to modify a few lines of code, since that custom functionality is currently not supported in the theme options panel, unlike all of the rest of your desired functionality.

BHillPhotos

Thanks, I can work with that I think. Would that be an easy thing to code? I have a wordpress guy who I contract out for jobs and would be better equipped than me.

But I do like it with the thumbnail square even how it is. Very clean professional blog style which is really what I want. (i’m being very selective because I got burned by purchasing a theme without much control, and yours is on the top of my list.

i would like to know this – In the blog, can I alter it so when I click on the thumbnail it takes me to that specific post? In your demo it takes the user to the image itself only larger, whereas it feels somewhat like a user-error. Know what I mean? If that could be switched as an option I’d love to know.

Thanks, appreciate it.

BHillPhotos

one more question.. (haha)

On the front homepage – If I needed to, would I have the option to control or remove the tagline section as well as the heading “Latest Projects” below it? I’d love to close that space up for my site.

Thanks!

BHillPhotos

Alright, me again.

I couldn’t help it, i caved. I’m weak. I had to have your theme. well done.

Only slight issue now is that the download keep stalling. I’m only getting about .5 a meg downloaded and that takes around 20 minutes, then the download quits. I’ve tried 3 times on different computers. I’ve contacted support as well. are they hosting the file or are you?

So once i get the theme I’ll be glad to start installing. Thanks for the help on this.

**update**

I got the file, i switched browsers from Safari to Firefox and it downloaded immediately. Weird, but good to know for next time.

BHillPhotos

YIKES , i’m having a crapstore of problems tonight.

Currently I cannot install the theme. I don’t know what this means but I’m getting these errors:

Hi OnionEye,

I’m having fun getting to know this theme.

Can you tell me how to turn on the Homepage? All I’m getting is the blog from the start. I can change settings, but i don’t know how to turn on the homepage / slider.

http://blog.brandonhillphotos.com

onioneye

Sure, Brandon! Glad you decided to buy the theme. :)

Please look under the “A Static Page As Your Front Page” section of the documentation, where this scenario is discussed, and you’ll find your answer. ;)

BHillPhotos

Thanks appreciate it. You the man. Sick of me yet?

Loving the theme, happy about my purchase. Couple questions—

1. Is there an easy way to turn off the slider so it doesn’t auto-slide at all? I’m trying to figure that out.

2. I’m not sure how to create a portfolio, maybe it’s my newness to Wordpress. I’d like to start by just making a simple portfolio lay-out like this but don’t understand how: http://themeforest.net/item/echo-clean-and-simple-wordpress-portfolio-theme/full_screen_preview/237345

When I ‘Add a New Portfolio’ i don’t have the options of layout. But when I add one in Pages I do have the layout options. yet those pages don’t seem to show up anywhere even though I’ve set them to publish. My site: http://blog.brandonhillphotos.com

3. On the slider, each slider image I’ve made I need to remove the title to be blank so it doesn’t show up in the slider window and push the image out of the window. Is that the intended way to do it? If so that’s fine, just wanted to make sure.

Thanks

onioneye

LOL , no, I kinda enjoy helping people out. :D

Here are the answers to your question:

1. This feature is coming in the next update, so hold on to your seat! :)

2. Please read the part of the documentation that explains in detail on how to setup your portfolio.

3. That’s not how it should behave. You’re not setting your slider as you should. Again, please refer to the documentation, where this part is throughly explained.

Good luck! ;)

BHillPhotos

Thanks. sorry, when you say documentation, where do i find that? Again, i’m a newb.

onioneye

It’s in the main folder you downloaded from ThemeForest, when you bought the theme. The folder is called “documentation”, and inside of it is an HTML file called “index”. Open it in your browser (Firefox, Google Chrome etc.), and read it. There are detailed descriptions on how to setup your portfolio and your slider in there, as well as many other things related to the theme.

Once again, good luck! ;)

I want to put this theme in dark. Can i do ?

thanks

onioneye

Well, of course you can. :) You have unlimited color schemes for the background, which you can set by using a colorpicker in the theme options panel, or by uploading textures/patterns to represent your background. In actuality, you can customize every bit of the theme in the options panel; it comes packed with 100+ options, so you won’t have to bother touching any part of the code.

Thanks, the documentation worked great on building my portfolio and getting to know the setup. Is it possible to build multiple portfolios. i.e. in my case as follows:

Portfolio—Commercial —Lifestyle

Also, do you know what my problem is here? It’s layering on an additional image:

http://blog.brandonhillphotos.com/?my_portfolio=perseverance

either that or I’m seein’ double. ;)

onioneye

You have an option to categorize portfolio items under the “portfolio categories” link, to let your visitors know that a certain item belongs to a “Commercial”, or “Lifestyle” category, and to let them filter the items, when they click a link to a category, just like in the demo site. However, if you want to have separate pages where the items from just one category would be listed, you would need to change one line of code in one of the source files.

As far as the image layering issue is concerned, you shouldn’t be including the portfolio images in the WordPress content editor, but rather in the “Featured Images” area to the right of your screen. Please refer to the documentation, where this is explained more closely. :)

onioneye

By the way, you still want those portfolio images that span to a width of 900 pixels? When you’re done setting up everything else, contact me, and we’ll sort that thing out. ;)

BHillPhotos

Thanks Onioneye.

yeah I think I’d really love to have a Portfolio button on my menu, then two drop downs, Commercial and Lifestyle. Each being their own portfolio page. So you’re saying I’d need some code input? Would you be able to provide that? Thanks.

And yes, i think you figured out what my goal is for the portfolio images being set to a full-width page when the user views them individually. I’ll add all of them and make sure not to add them in the content as well like you instructed. Appreciate the help, is the best way to contact through this thread?

I’ll tell you what. As soon as you’re done setting everything else up, send me an email at zlatan@onioneye.com, and I’ll modify the code for you. :)

Hello,

Beautiful work on this one for sure!

I was about to purchase for a client job and noticed that the letter g in lower case is getting cut off in wherever it appears as a heading.

For instance when you go to this purchasers site:

http://blog.brandonhillphotos.com

and scroll down the g’s are missing tails.

Any way to fix that as I am sure my client won’t go for that.

Thank you and kind regards, Derek

onioneye

Thanks for the compliment! I’m glad you like the theme! :)

If you don’t like the letter g in the current font displayed in the demo, and on Brandon’s web site, you can easily replace the font with another one in the theme options panel, under the “Typography” section. You have at least 20 different font choices in there. :)

thewillingaccomplice

Understood but I don’t understand why it is getting cut off to begin with sorry?

thank you for your prompt reply

kind regards

onioneye

It’s just the way this font works. It works like that on every website that uses it. :)

You can always change the font in the theme options panel if you like, or even install a plugin such as this one: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-google-fonts/, to have an even greater choice of fonts. This is just one of the reasons why WordPress rocks. :D

Thanks much for taking the time to reply and your patience.

I will be buying tonight when i get home from day job.

Making a gallery is easy as it gets. You just need to create a WordPress page, name it, and assign one of the available page templates to it, depending on how many columns you want to have in one row of the portfolio page, and whether you want the portfolio sidebar to be active or not.

The custom post type named “My Portfolio” is in charge of making the individual items and assigning multiple images to it, via multiple “Featured Images” found in the right-hand corner of the screen. :)

You have all of the information above explained in the documentation file, just in case you get stuck on something.

Hi There!

I’m considering purchasing your theme for a client’s site. A few questions. Is it possible to make several different portfolios? It appears so, but wanted to double check. And on the portfolio pages is there anyway to have the images show up without the “View Full Post” and “Categories” Under them? I just need the image to open in a lightbox, no post to link to it and I want to keep it as clean as possible.

Thanks and great theme!

Hello there!

I’m really glad you like the theme. :)

It is possible to have multiple portfolios, but you would have to tweak one or two lines of code to achieve that, since a custom post type named “My Portfolio” is in charge of holding all the portfolio posts. There’s also a custom taxonomy, called “Portfolio Categories”, that belongs to the aforementioned custom post type, so you could alternatively categorize your items, and display them on different pages, depending on which category they belong to, getting the effect of multiple portfolios that you want.

As far as the “View Full Post” and “Category” links to the portfolio item are concerned, you only need to erase the HTML where they get called, and you’ll get what you’re searching for.

P.S. By the way, the theme comes with 100+ options, so you can customize every single part of it, and leave the options you like unchanged.

Cheers, buddy, and good luck with the theme if you end up buying it! ;)

Hi, great theme, we’ve just purchased.

Well designed, and very thorough.

Our current problem though is the custom typography. We want to use TypeKit instead, for a specific font, but can’t work out how to switch off or bypass the type options, and where to edit the CSS .

I’ve looked at functions and custom files, there’s a lot of PHP going on that is a little above our knowledge.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

Hi there!

I’m glad you’re satisfied with the theme! :)

As far as your question about typography goes, everything related to the custom fonts and typography rules gets written in the custom.php file, which contains the custom CSS and gets outputted in the header.php file. The actual CSS is made in the theme-functions.php file, which can be found in the /wp-content/themes/echo/admin/ directory. When you manage to open it, have a look at the first function at the top. That’s where the typographic styles are made.

Cheers and good luck with the theme! ;)
