does this theme work with child themes?

onioneye

Hi there,

thanks for taking an interest in the Firefly theme!

As far as your question goes, the theme is definitely compatible with child themes; you would just have to replace the “get_template_directory_uri” with the “get_stylesheet_directory_uri” function, as noted at the top of the functions.php file:

If you’re loading from a child theme use stylesheet_directory instead of template_directory

That’s it. Have lots of fun working with the Firefly theme, if you end up buying it! :)

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it. I def need a child theme for this upcoming project as I will have to make several mods and don’t want to lose them on updates. Great theme….really clean and minimalist, while having some incredible attributes as well. Love it.

Hi!Perfect Theme..I love it! :)

I just ask you..Is there any way to make it multilanguage? We need two languages and don’t want to make 2 installations of that. Is it WPML compatible?

Any suggestion?

You guys give some kind of paid service to personalize some features of your theme?

Thanks! :)

onioneye

Hi there,

glad you find the theme perfect! Thanks for buying it. :)

When it comes to making the theme multilingual, please be aware that you might have to adjust the code a bit, to make the plugin of this complexity fit into the theme, not only by functionality, but by design as well, and that is most definitely a task for a developer. This refers to the portfolio and the pages because the theme uses AJAX to dynamically load those two on the same page, instead of loading them on completely separate pages, which can sometimes cause problems with plugins such as these. Also, please bear in mind that the job of us authors is to ensure that the theme’s code is written in a way that minimizes the chances of conflicts with third party code (that of plugins), but we can’t guarantee 100% compatibility with each and every plugin out there because there are literally tens of thousands of them. Testing the theme against every plugin would be next to impossible unfortunately.

By the way, I heard that WPML and qTranslate are considered two of the best plugins for multilingual sites. I absolutely know nothing of the first one, but I had the chance to work with qTranslate once, a few years back, and I remember that someone tried to use with one of my previous themes, “Yin & Yang”, which utilizes AJAX as well, so I did some digging around the forum, and discovered a post made by the user “nlafay”, on the 76th page of the Yin & Yang’s forum, http://themeforest.net/item/yin-yang-clear-and-slick-wp-portfolio-theme/discussion/634395?page=76. It seems that he/she had made it to work, but I don’t know the end result exactly, since the user never replied to my last post. Anyway, I just thought that might be of some help to you.

Good luck!

Hi there. First of all, great theme.

I have a problem though. I’m not sure what I did but the site is adding to my link text and breaking them.

What I mean is: I installed the site under brianmckraydesign.com/wp and whenever I click a link, it adds /#/wp So what should be: brianmckraydesign.com/wp/contact becomes brianmckraydesign.com/wp/#/wp/contact

What did I do and can I fix it?

onioneye

Hi there,

glad you find the theme great! Thanks for buying it. :)

As far as the URLs go, they should be displayed like that, so you and your users can easily share the links to your items; otherwise, the URL would always stay the same, which wouldn’t be very helpful. Having said that, this is a standard practice when it comes to using AJAX to dynamically load content on the same page, instead of opening a completely new page, so there is absolutely nothing to fix.

Sincerely,

OnionEye

Sorry, I don’t think I am explaining well. The links are not working because additional “stuff” is being added. When I click contacts I should get/go to “brianmckraydesign.com/wp/contacts” BUT I get “briancmkraydesign.com/wp/#/wp/contacts” instead and it’s doesn’t work. The additional ”#/wp/” is a bad thing. If you visit the site, you’ll easily see what is happening. brianmckraydesign.com/wp

Sorry. Nevermind. I see what you are saying now about the addresses. I had to delete the database and reinstall to make it work correctly.

Hey OnionEye, I currently have Yin&Yang and want to update to something new, but when I do the live preview while listening to pandora radio, the music skips like the theme hogs up a ton of bandwidth. Is this just the preview? will it do that to anyone who visits my site while listening to music?

onioneye

Hi there,

thanks for taking an interest in the theme!

As far as your question goes, there is absolutely no reason to concern yourself over this. First of all, the site is lightweight and optimized for speed, so in no way is it consuming tons of bandwidth. Second of all, the habits of Internet users vary from one to another user, so it is highly unlikely that someone will stumble upon the same thing, while looking at your site, and even if this unlikely scenario happens, I am not of that belief that they will think there is something wrong with the site. And last of all, it’s quite possible that this only happens on your machine, as with many other issues with sites on the web today, due to different configurations, or different speeds of Internet connections.

Hope this helps making your decision! Have lots of fun working with the theme, if you end up buying it! :)

Hello, everything works great and I love the theme. I just can not figure out how to get my blog tabs to show preview images. If I click on the blog post it will show the image inside but it will not show a preview on the blog page. Check it out http://yupvideo.com

Hi there,

glad you love the theme! Thanks for buying it. :)

You can set the thumbnail for a post, under the “Featured Image” settings box, when you are editing an existing post, or making a new one. Note: you need to click the “use as featured image” link, once you chose the thumbnail.

Hi There,

Really beautiful theme!

Does it have a search input? I would need one in the header for the site I am working on..

Thanks,

JM

onioneye

Hi there,

glad you find the theme beautiful! Thanks for taking an interest in it, and for buying Yin & Yang. :)

When it comes to the search input, you can include it in the expandable footer area via the search widget; however, if you want to have it in the header, a bit of development work would be need of you, but I don’t see why a developer couldn’t complete this reasonably quickly.

Enjoy working with the theme, if you end up buying it! :)

thanks for the reply earlier… one more question. can the blog be set as the home page? and how are the blog items sized? are they dynamic based on aspect ratio of the featured image?

onioneye

Hi there,

you are very much welcome! :)

To answer your latest questions:

1) The blog can certainly be set as the homepage.

2) You are right. The size of a blog item is determined based on the aspect ratio of its featured image.

Once again, thanks for taking an interest in the theme, and have fun working with it, if you end up buying it!

How difficult is it to have the responsive mobile site use a similar navigation to the desktop site instead of the boring jump to menu (no offense)?

onioneye

Hi there,

thanks for taking an interest in the theme!

As far as your question goes, achieving that is as easy as removing the following lines of code, from the style.css file:

/* display the select menu, while hiding the normal menu */
#mobile-menu { display: block; }
.menu-section nav { display: none; }

Enjoy working with the theme, if you end up buying it! :)

hi OnionEye, excellent work. was wondering how difficult it would be to modify portfolio items to open a div like your other theme to display content instead of the popup display. Such as : http://themeforest.net/item/yin-yang-clear-and-slick-wp-portfolio-theme/full_screen_preview/634395 Thanks! :)

onioneye

Hi there,

thank you for the compliment about the theme, and for taking an interest in it!

When it comes to your question, there isn’t a definite answer for it. I guess it all really depends on the level of your development skills, but it’s definitely not a task that can be completed in a half an hour. It would certainly take more work than that.

Enjoy working with the Firefly theme, if you end up buying it! :)

Hi there, my client just bought yout theme and asked me for some customization. The only thing I can’t undestand is how to determine the “ajax” call on menu. I need to decide what menu item activate the “dropdown”. How is it possibile? Where is the call to this functionality in theme files?

Hi,

is the gallery in the theme capable of about 100 pictures in one gallery? Or is there a limit? Maybe because of the huge size of that amount of pictures?

Thanks for answering.

onioneye

Hi there,

thanks for taking an interest in the theme!

When it comes to your questions, there is absolutely no limit to the number of posts in the portfolio, but having one hundred of them would probably be a bit too much, since there is no pagination available, meaning that the items would be displayed all at once, which in turn means that the site would take longer to load.

Enjoy working with the theme if you end up purchasing it, and please feel free to ask more questions, in case you have any. :)

Thanks for you answer but i was talking about the gallery of one portfolio item. There it seems to be a maximum of ten pictures.

Another question: Will there come more social buttons in the right corner available like 500px oder deviantart?

onioneye

Hi there,

in that case, you would have to modify three files, to expand the number of possible images in the slider. I guess a skillful developer could complete this task in about a half an hour. By the way, I will give you the name of the files, once and if you purchase the theme.

As far as the social icons go, I am afraid I currently don’t have any plans to add more of them, but there is a PSD file available for all the icons in the download file, so you can do this yourself.

Hello, I was looking at your templates.. either firefly or hypermind. Before I purchase I have a few questions. I will be able to customize a different background correct? like upload my own image of a different pattern.. Also do I have the ability to arrange my portfolio pieces in an order I choose? and can I choose my own colors? Lastly, is either firefly or hypermind easier/faster to handle? Sorry, I bought a template and its not what I thought… so I need something new but fast and i love the functionality for your templates, they are exactly what I want if I can customize my own pattern and colors to my identity. Thanks!!!!

onioneye

Hi there,

thanks for taking an interest in my work!

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, you have an option to easily upload your own background pattern, if you wish to.

2) Sure thing. You can reorder the portfolio items by changing their publishing dates, in the Publish settings box, when you are editing existent, or making new items.

3) If you want to change the colors throughout the theme, you would have to customize the CSS in the style.css file.

Note: beginner to intermediate knowledge of CSS is required of you for this task.

4) Both of the themes are based on the same framework, so the ease/speed of setup is basically the same.

Have fun working with either Firefly, or HyperMind, if you end up purchasing one of those two! :)

Hi Onioneye,

I also want to compliment you on this nice portfolio theme. Only that the portfolio pop ups actually do not come up in chrome for me (mac latest update) Any ideas as to way ?

onioneye

Hi there,

thank you for the compliment about the theme! Appreciate it. :)

As far as your question goes, everything works perfectly on my end. Did you test it on another computer by any chance? What exact version of Chrome are you running?

I’m using Version 23.0.1271.101 (the latest) I have the same problem on my mac and pc (I’m using the identically version on both machines including extensions etc). I was thinking that an extension might prevent the pop up from actually coming up – but disabling extensions like ad block didn’t help either…. ?!

onioneye

Hi there,

I just checked it in the same version of Chrome on a MacBook Pro, a PC, and an iPad, and everything worked perfectly for me. Having said that, maybe you should try asking someone (one of your friends perhaps) to quickly test the site out for you.
