Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the theme’s update changelog?

How can I crop my Full-Width style media images?

By default the full-width style media images have no vertical cropping, this is to allow you to upload images of various proportions without having issues. However, you can easily add a fixed crop for the images.

Step 1:

Open functions/default-image-sizes.php and locate lines 44-45:

if( $post_layout == 'Full Width' || $post_media_size == 'full' ) {
   return '9999';

Change the 9999 value to the height in pixels you want the images cropped.

Step 2: In the same file locate lines 51-52

if( $post_layout == 'Full Width' || $post_media_size == 'full' ) {
 return false;

Change where it says “false” to say “true”.

How do I setup the homepage?

Your homepage should automatically display your latest posts. If it is not, go to Settings->Reading and make sure that you don’t have your homepage set to display a static page.

For the sliders, you will want to go to Appearance->Theme Options and in the “sliders” tab you will find the settings to choose your categories for the slider and carousel.

Whenever you make any changes to your homepage (such as changing the category for the slider) be sure to visit your site using ?clear-cache at the end – example: – that will clear the cached queries (which are in place to speed up your site).

How do I setup my contact page?

The contact page is setup using the Google map shortcode from the included Symple Shortcodes plugin and the Contact Form 7 plugin (free) for the form:

You are welcome of course to use any form plugin you wish though ;)

Here you can find the exact code used on the demo page:

[symple_googlemap title="Pillar Point" location="Pillar Point Afs, Half Moon Bay, CA" zoom="10" height=400]

[symple_heading type="h2" title="Contact Form" margin_top="40px;" margin_bottom="20px" text_align="left"]

[symple_spacing size="20px"]

[contact-form-7 id="25" title="Contact me"]

How can I change the homepage carousel time between rotations?

1. Open js/posts-carousel-init.js
2. Add a new parameter “pause” and give it a time in milliseconds. The default is 4000 (4 seconds).

Example (makes transition time 8 seconds):

How can I randomize the recent posts slider widget?

1. Open functions/widgets/widget-featured-posts.php
2. Add the following to the parameters:

'orderby' => 'rand'

How can I display full-titles for the carousel entries?

1. Open content-homepage-carousel.php and content-related-posts.php
2. Locate the following code:

// Display trimmmed title
if ( strlen( get_the_title() ) > 35) {
echo substr( the_title( $before = '', $after = '', FALSE ), 0, 35 ) . '...';
} else {                                                the_title();
} ?>

Change all that to:

<?php the_title(); ?>

How can I remove vertical cropping for featured images?

You can easily disable the height cropping for your featured images.

If using a child theme you’ll want to copy the function from functions/default-image-sizes.php into your child theme, otherwise edit it manually.

You want to find the following code:

//blog entries
if( $args == 'entry_width' ) return '620';
if( $args == 'entry_height' ) return '320';
if( $args == 'entry_crop' ) return true;

//blog posts
if( $args == 'post_width' ) {
if( $post_layout == 'Full Width' || $post_media_size == 'full' ) {
return '940';
} else {
return '620';
if( $args == 'post_height' ) {
f( $post_layout == 'Full Width' || $post_media_size == 'full' ) {
return '400';
} else {
return '320';
if( $args == 'post_crop' ) {
if( $post_layout == 'Full Width' || $post_media_size == 'full' ) {
return true;
} else {
return true;

Simply change all the “320” and “620” values to 9999 (to remove fixed vertical height on entries and posts) then locate where it says “return true” and change to “return false” to disable hard cropping.

How i can remove the main search box?

There isn’t any built-in option for removing it. So you would either have to edit header.php and delete the HTML or you can add some CSS to your site to hide it:

#header-search { display: none !important; }
