Hi Jonathan, So far the Hybrid theme works smoothly except for one issue: uploading new icons. On a local server it’s no problem. On a remote server with password protected FTP the ZIP is uploaded but without any results. I’ve tried it several times and followed the instructions exactly. I’ve checked the comments and found m’m not the only one with this problem. Any solution or workaround for this? Regards, Meindert

Hello Meindert,

Thanks for your comment! What happens exactly when you upload a new ZIP file, do you get any error?

Also, what version of the Hybrid WordPress Theme do you have? I have improved the font-icons importation process since version 1.5 (see changelog).

When uploading new icons, the Hybrid Theme makes use of the default “WP_Filesystem”, which is a native WordPress interface used by WordPress itself for installing/updating themes and plugins. The only difference is the destination folder which differs.

There was indeed one person who couldn’t upload new sets of icons. Fortunately he was able to solve the issue, which was that not all files of his WordPress installation were owned by the same user. If this is also the case for you and you have access to the server, then you might try to assign all files of your WordPress installation to the same user.

If that doesn’t work, you can try to add the following to your wp-config.php file:

// FTP credentials required for WP_Filesystem
define('FS_METHOD', 'ftpext');
define('FTP_SSL', false);
define('FTP_BASE', '/httpdocs/');
define('FTP_CONTENT_DIR', '/httpdocs/wp-content/');
define('FTP_HOST', 'yourdomain.com');
define('FTP_USER', 'your_username');
define('FTP_PASS', 'your_password');

Make sure to adapt the FTP_BASE and FTP_CONTENT_DIR paths, and to replace the correct domain, username and password.

Usually if WordPress doesn’t have enough permissions to write the required files, it will ask to fill FTP credentials so the files can be written over FTP directly. Did you get this request when uploading icons?

Also, do you have a (self-managed) dedicated server, or an account on a shared-hosting? I’m asking this because I have personally checked the font-icons importation feature with few shared-hosting services with success, and the person mentioned above who encountered the issue had a private server.

I hope that helps a little and that you will be able to unblock the situation ASAP! Please keep me posted, I look forward to your reply ;) Best regards, Jonathan

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I didn’t have the impression that it was due to the theme, more a permission issue :-). Didn’t know where else to turn.

- We’re using the latest Hybrid version. - Also got the FTP request - And yes we use a private server (testing on shared-hosting worked fine).

I think your on the right track. The ‘FTP credentials required for WP_Filesystem’ do the trick? Thanks, Meindert

Sorry, no luck. We even tried renaming the folder with the current files, to see if it would raise an error. Nothing happened. Strange

Hi MKuyvenhoven,

Thanks for the follow-up! Did you try to set the Apache/PHP user/group as the owner of the WordPress files?

I’m no expert when it comes to server administration but my understanding is that the Apache/PHP user or group must have write permissions to the WordPress installation files. What platform is your server running on? Is PHP running as CGI or as an Apache module? Check the user/group permissions to make sure that Apache/PHP is able to write files in your WordPress installation. Here are some links that could help: http://stackoverflow.com/a/12003845
http://superuser.com/questions/306446/php-mkdir-permission-denied

Again what is the error returned when you upload a new ZIP file and hit “Save”? Note that when saving the Theme Options, the Hybrid Theme processes the ZIP file only once, and the next time you hit “Save” it won’t re-process it again (therefore you will see the error only once). Make sure to upload a new different ZIP file in order to trigger the importation process again. I hope that helps! Keep me posted ;) Best, Jonathan

Hi, thanks for the input.

The error we get is: “Error: Missing SVG font format for the Icons. Please upload a ZIP file that contains font files in SVG, Woff, EOT and TTF formats (under the Icons tab) – such ZIP can be downloaded from http://icomoon.io/app/#browse."

When we check the ZIP, we see it does contain the SVG.

Dear Meindert,

Thank you for the additional info. Were you able to figure out this permission issue since my last message? If not, would you like me to take a look at your server configuration and try investigate this issue further? Please feel free to send me credentials and I’ll try my best to figure out a solution for you.

I’m looking forward to improve the importation process to make it work in any circumstances, so please keep me posted!

Kind regards, Jonathan

Dear Meindert,

Thanks for your reply. Please use the contact form on my profile page, I’ll try to take a look and will keep you posted.

By the way I have found helpful information regarding permissions issues in WordPress: http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

I believe the following is probably relevant to the problem you are facing:
Typically, all files should be owned by your user (ftp) account on your web server, and should be writable by that account. On shared hosts, files should never be owned by the webserver process itself (sometimes this is www, or apache, or nobody user).

Any file that needs write access from WordPress should be owned or group-owned by the user account used by the WordPress (which may be different than the server account). For example, you may have a user account that lets you FTP files back and forth to your server, but your server itself may run using a separate user, in a separate usergroup, such as dhapache or nobody. If WordPress is running as the FTP account, that account needs to have write access, i.e., be the owner of the files, or belong to a group that has write access. In the latter case, that would mean permissions are set more permissively than default (for example, 775 rather than 755 for folders, and 664 instead of 644).

The file and folder permissions of WordPress should be the same for most users, depending on the type of installation you performed and the umask settings of your system environment at the time of install.
Note for others: the above doesn’t apply for shared-hosting. Most shared hosting don’t have permissions issues:
The above may not apply to shared hosting systems that use the “suexec” approach for running PHP binaries. This is a popular approach used by many web hosts. For these systems, the php process runs as the owner of the php files themselves, allowing for a simpler configuration and a more secure environment for the specific case of shared hosting.

I look forward to your email ;) Kind regards, Jonathan

Thank you very much, I have just replied to your email ;) Your WordPress installation seems to be corrupted and the “W3 Total Cache” plugin seems to be the cause, even though it is disabled.

I have just deleted the plugin from your installed plugins and your site is now working correctly. There is still an error in the backend thought:

W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /www/htdocs/w0103e90/outsourcingmaster/wp-content/advanced-cache.php.

It looks like the “W3 Total Cache” plugin was unable to delete itself completely so we’ll have to remove those files manually in order to permanently solve this issue. Once removed, feel free to re-install a fresh copy of the plugin.

Keep me posted, and please feel free to contact me again if you require further assistance. Best regards, Jonathan

Hi a few questions, I know little about these things so forgive me. 1-The main menu, when you scroll to each section,page title in url changes after #, is it optimised by SE?, if yes is there any disadvantage when compared to non hashed titles?

2-Can project’s thumbnails hight be changed,different ratio ,for example 200×270.

3-Can i remove frames from the thumbnail?

4-Can the project section with thumbnails be set as a blog?

5-can use my own slider instead of yours,if yes will it be complicated to do it?

Thx.

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for your message. Let me answer your questions:

  1. Yes the landing-page sections are fully optimized for search engines. Their functionality is similar to the Wikipedia pages: links to specific sections on your landing-page might be displayed in search results.
  2. The Project Thumbnails can be resized but that will require you to edit one of the theme files (/wp-content/themes/hybrid/code/projects.php). Let me know if you need any assistance with this, I’ll be happy to help!
  3. You could remove the border from the thumbnails with custom CSS rules. Again if you need further assistance with this, I might be able to help.
  4. The Projects are registered as a WordPress Custom Post Type, therefore it benefits from all the regular post displays, take a look:
  5. You can definitely use any other slider. There is no limitation or issue that I’m aware of about replacing the slider. Simply disable the default slider under the “Main Slider” tab in the Theme Options page, and then add the shortcode of your own slider to your “Home” section.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

I purchased this theme as I like the high tech work and forward thinking design that went into, however I haven’t looked at it more closely yet due to a complete lack of time. Does it come with any kind of “lightbox” like script for viewing images in a box/window when they are clicked (sorry for the silly explanation)?

JoNa
JoNa Author

Dear luvli,

Thank you for your message. When expending the Projects, a larger version of the image is displayed right underneath the thumbnail, nicely aligned with the Project Description. We came up with this great alternative as we wanted to avoid the usual lightbox found on most websites. This is similar to the way the new Google Images works. And you can always add a link to an even larger version right within the Project Description.

If you’re referring to other images, for example when using the default WordPress Gallery shortcode, then each thumbnail can point to the attachment page displaying the larger version. If you would like them to open in a lightbox then you will have to add one by editing theme files. Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance with this matter.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for your message. Please look at your WordPress Pages: the one used for the “Prices” section should be named “Hybrid Prices”. Simply edit this page to edit the pricing tables.

If you don’t have this page anymore, resetting the theme will re-create this page. To do so, go to the “Reset Theme” tab in the Theme Options page.

The content of this page can also be found in the following file: /wp-content/themes/hybrid/core/default-data/pages-content/Prices.txt – Or simply copy/past the following into a new page:

Hi I’ll put all my questions together here,so don’t read my earlire posts. I see you must be on holiday or something:) a few issues too.

1-when I click on blog place holder menu and from there enter blog ,mouse over blog place holder menu does not indicate that i can go back to posts place holder, it is an arrow, does not change into this little hand icon.

2-From blog place holder page when i enter one of the blogs ,page opens in the middle of the post.

3-I would like to remove frames from around the thumbnails pls 4-is it possible to change thumbnail ratio ? 5-When I flip an ipad from a horizontal to vertical position, the menu shifts below the header. 6-When I try to add “more” tag in project pages, it does not work, it displays the whole post on the thumbnail window. 7-In the explorer 9 thumbnail animation does not work. 8-I also sent you an email about one plugin that doesn’t work at speed mode, any chance you could help me with it? 9-is there any way you could make it resize at the change of ipad position in a perfect smooth way? like let’s say this theme?http://www.elegantthemes.com/preview/PureType/

That’s it for now, sorry for the length. Nice job by the way Cheers.

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for your message. I apologize for any delay in our reply, usually 48 hours is to be expected during weekends (see Support Page), sorry for any inconvenience!

Let me reply to your questions:
  1. You can change the cursor with custom CSS. Just copy/past the following into the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page:
    .spark-blog .current-menu-item a {
      cursor: pointer !important;
    }

  2. This is the default WordPress behavior when clicking on “More” links. It helps the user continue reading where they left off. This does not occur when clicking on the title of the Blog Post, it only affects the “More” link. You can disable this by adding a filter in the functions.php file (see WordPress Codex for details), or by using a plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/more-to-the-top/
  3. In order to remove the frame from the thumbnails, please add the following code to the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page:
    .spark-project-thumb .front img {
      padding: 0;
    }
    .spark-project-thumb .back {
      border: none;
    }

  4. Yes it is possible to change the thumbnail ratio, but it will require you to edit one of the theme files: /wp-content/themes/hybrid/core/shortcodes.php on line 435 – Simply edit the $width and $height variables. Depending on the size you set, some CSS adjustments might be required as well. Please note that this code will be improved and moved to /core/projects.php in the next update (to be released within a couple of days).
  5. (Please see point 9 below)
  6. Thanks for reporting this, the “More” link will be made available for the Projects as well in a future update!
  7. The Project Thumbnails do work on all supported browsers, including Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9 and 10. However the 3D CSS animation flipping effect works on browsers supporting CSS transformation/animations, and because Internet Explorer 9 doesn’t support this kind of CSS animations, it shows the other side of the flipper directly without the 3D transitioning.
  8. The Speed Mode loads all javascript files at the bottom, including the jQuery library, allowing a faster page-load and page-rendering (see Yahoo! Developer Best Practices and Google Developers Best Practices). As explained in the Documentation available next to the “Speed Mode” setting in the Theme Options page, “[it] might break compatibility with third-party plugins relying on jQuery and inserting their own scripts at the top of the HTML document”. Simply revert to the “Standard” mode to avoid any conflicts. Plugins inserting their javascript files in the top of the HTML document are not supported, you could edit their code to include their javascript at the bottom instead, or use another software to force all javascript to be loaded last (the W3TC plugin can do that, or services like Google PageSpeed Service, which is free at the moment)
  9. We have extensively tested orientation change on most mobile devices, what exactly are you encountering? Is there any chance that you could make a screenshot of the issue you encounter? Also, what version of iOS do you have? We are looking forward to improve the experience on all versions! For information, the site you are linking to is not responsive and is just being resized by your browser.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

Well I wanted to experiment a little bit, that’s why it would be better if you could name files and lines, but if it is a big problem, let’s say i want to leave the hight and increase width to 260. I actually did it , the only problem is that it does not resize on the other side when thumbnail turns.

I also sent you the email regarding cross icons and ipad menu problem. I haven’t mentioned, i have ipad 5,updated. Let me know if you haven’t received my email. Thx again,appreciated your help. Thx.

JoNa
JoNa Author

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for your message. There’s no need to edit any of the CSS files, as CSS can be easily overridden by simply adding your own rules to the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page. I invite you to try out the “Inspect Element” feature on Chrome or Firefox to determine what selector to use in order to affect the appropriate element.

Remember that we also need to take into account each and every step of the responsive layout, meaning that if you adjust the CSS for the full layout then you’ll have to adapt it for the tablet and mobile layouts as well.

Regarding your custom size, there’s not enough space to display 4 thumbnails of 260px wide each (1040px total) as the layout is based on the 960 Grid System which offers at most 960px width. To keep the same width as the current thumbnails but without the frames (therefore having bigger images) we should set them at 220px which leaves enough space between each thumbnail.

The other side can be targeted using the ”.back” class. Here is an example based on a width of 220px:

.spark-project-thumb .front img {
  padding: 0;
}
.spark-project-thumb .back {
  border: none;
  padding: 10px 20px;
}

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you! Also, please try to keep the conversation in one thread so we don’t loose track :)

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for your message. You could do that using custom CSS and setting your image as a background for the section of your choice.

Here is a fully working example, simply copy/past the following code into the “Custom CSS” field from the Theme Options page:

/* Set fullscreen background size for all sections */
.landing-page-section {
  -webkit-background-size: cover;
  -moz-background-size: cover;
  -o-background-size: cover;
  background-size: cover;
}

/* Define custom background images for each section */
.section-home {
  background: url('http://efuneral.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Green-Funeral.jpg');
}

.section-projects {
  background: url('http://efuneral.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Green-Funeral.jpg');
}

.section-prices {
  background: url('http://efuneral.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Green-Funeral.jpg');
}

.section-contact {
  background: url('http://efuneral.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Green-Funeral.jpg');
}

/* Some minor adjustment to avoid blank area between last section and footer */
footer { margin-top: 0; }
.landing-page-section:last-of-type {
  padding-bottom: 50px !important;
}

Replace the image URL with your own image.

Hi,

are there any tutorials with this theme? I have just bought it and have no clue how it works, whether it is the right solution for my page or how to setup the sliders and homepage layout. I am close to abandoning this theme. Please help!!!

JoNa
JoNa Author

Dear tonycavallo,

Thank you for your message. Yes each option is fully documented in the backend. There are also video tutorials embedded in the Theme Options page, as well as fully documented shortcodes (see the “Shortcode” tab) and further guidance is available from the top “Help” tab.

Once activated everything is fully automated: Sample pages are created with demo content that you can very easily customize by editing each page. The landing-page and the slider are already fully set, all you need to do is to customize it with your own images and texts.

To set each section of the landing-page, go to the “Landing-Page” tab in the Theme Options page, there you can edit/add/remove sections from the landing-page as well as re-order them and set their title and content.

To customize the main slider, go to the “Main Slider” tab in the Theme Options page, there you can very simply upload your images and set a text description for each slide.

There are no special skills required for the customization, simply install and activate the theme and you’ll see that nothing is missing, including extensive documentation right within the backend next to each and every option.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

Hi I have purchased the theme and customizing for www.felixsolutions.net

I have two questions,

1) Would you know why footer is showing on two places at landing page?

2) How to translate slider? This site will be bilingual (English and Serbian) and we are thinking to use Ceceppa plugin for that, everything looks OK, but it seams that it is unpossible to translate sliders since they are not custom posts. Any idea on how this should be done with this theme?

Many thanks, Mike

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your message. When I look at the HTML code it looks like the footer is included as one of the landing-page sections, are you sure it is not listed in the “Landing-Page” tab on the Theme Options page?

If not then could you please send me credentials to your admin panel so I can take a further look? You can use the contact form on my profile page.

Regarding the translation issue, I’m not familiar with this specific plugin, so please allow a few days and I’ll look into it!

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

Kind regards, Jonathan

Hello. This theme looks great. Just one question though: Can I change the overall colors of this theme? Like the header and icons.. i want them in blue, not black. Would that be possible?

JoNa

Dear osmansafdar ,

Thank you for your comment. Yes the Hybrid Theme is fully customizable straight from the admin panel! Regarding the icons you can alter their color via easy CSS, here is an example:

.font-icon {
    color: blue !important;
}

Simply copy/past the above into the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you. If you have any further questions please contact me again – I’d be happy to hear from you ;)

Best regards, Jonathan

Default-user

Also how can i change the color of the container that holds the slider? Thanks!

Default-user

It Seems that there is a “Black Background” version and a “White background” version… Mine is black and I cant seem to switch to White…. quick response would be appreciated! :)

Hello osmansafdar,

Thanks for your messages and sorry for the delay! Both the Header, Footer and the Main Slider backgrounds can be customized using simple custom CSS.

Simply copy/past the following to the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page:

/* Header */
header {
    background: red;
}

/* Main Slider */
.main-slider-container {
   background: orange;
}

/* Remove the black arrow from the header */
.spark-main-menu a {
    background: none !important;
}

The color names can be replaced with color codes like “#ffffff”.

In order to customize the background color of the footer you can use the following:

/* Footer */
footer {
    background: purple !important;
}

Keep in mind that in order to keep the white text readable you’ll have to choose a dark background color for both the header and footer. If you would like to opt for a light color then you will have to change the text color to black by adding color: black;, here is an example:

/* Set Header background-color to white */
header {
    background: white;
}

/* Set all Header links to black */
header a {
    color: black !important;
}

/* Set active-link to red */
header a.current-menu-item,
header a.active {
    color: red !important;
}

If you would like a white (or very light) background color for the footer then you better remove the “dark” class from the footer which will restore black text for all titles and texts. To do that, edit the following file: “/wp-content/themes/hybrid/footer.php” and simply remove the word “dark” that appears on line 12.

Once done simply set your light background color via CSS:
footer {
    background: white;
}

Again the above is to be added to the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page.

I sincerely hope that the above helps and that it’s not too complicated. Once you get familiar with basic CSS you can do a lot of customization quit easily! If you need ANY further assistance please don’t hesitate to let me know, I will be more than happy to help as much as I can ;) Best, Jonathan

Thanks Jona! These CSS codes are working perfectly! :)

Default-user

Hi Jona,

Can you give me the css code to change the icon color. The code you provided earlier only changes the inside part of the icons, but the black part remains same. I’d like the change the black part too.

Also, for the footer social media icons, i want to change the inside part from black to blue. Any code for that?

Thanks!

Hey osmansafdar,

Thanks for your message! I just replied to your email ;) Simply add the following CSS to the “Custom CSS” in the Theme Options page:

/* Main color of the font-icons */
.font-icon {
    color: orange !important;
}

/* Background color for boxed font-icons */
.font-icon.boxed,
.font-icon.boxed-large {
    background: red !important;
}

To target the icons in the footer only, simply prepend the rules with “footer ” :

/* Main color of the font-icons in the footer */
footer .font-icon {
    color: orange !important;
}

/* Background color for boxed font-icons in the footer */
footer .font-icon.boxed,
footer .font-icon.boxed-large {
    background: red !important;
}

That should work! Please don’t hesitate to contact me again if you encounter any difficulties or need further assistance with this, I’ll be happy to help ;) Best, Jonathan

Another question! Is there a way to change the color of the separator line which appears in the footer? Its black by default…

JoNa
JoNa Author

Hello osmansafdar,

Thanks for your message. Sure, the separator line is made of 2 borders, here is how you would change both border colors at the same time:

hr.separator {
    border-color: red;
}

If you would like to set different colors for the top and the bottom borders then use the following code:

hr.separator {
    border-top-color: red;
    border-bottom-color: orange;
}

Note that this will affect the separator color everywhere. If you would like to alter its color only on “dark” backgrounds then prepend the rule with “.dark ”, or if you would like to alter the separator line in the footer only, prepend the rule with “footer ”, for example:

footer hr.separator {
    border-color: red;
}

As usual the above code is to be added to the “Custom CSS” field in the Theme Options page.

I hope that you will find this useful, and please feel free to contact me again if I may be of any further help ;) Best! Jonathan

Hii, got another question…

I want to create spaces between sections. For example, between Projects and Plans. So when the visitor clicks “Projects” on the navigation menu, the site scrolls down the Projects section. But a part of “Prices/Plans” is also shown right below Projects. I dont want the visitor to be able to see the Plans section unless he clicks it on the navigation menu… getting my point?! So basically i just want to insert blank spaces between sections…. but still adding spaces doesn’t seem to work…. is there any work around for this?

Thanks!

Another question: On the contact form, I want to change the button text from “Submit Form” to something else… how can I do that?!

Hi I’ve been asking you for a while about menu sliding of the header on the ipad and cross icons on the thumbnail preview window, I sent you an email with pictures. Thx

Dear colcio123,

Thank you for contacting me, and really sorry for the delay! I’m doing my real best to provide quality support to as much people as I can, however while I also try to provide great updates and improvements, it eventually happens that I get overwhelmed and that a few mails don’t make it in time when it’s a repetitive support request (so I can also help new comers) – but don’t worry I always try to reply to every email, even a few days late!

I just replied to your email. I don’t seem to have received the pictures you mentioned, so if you could send them again it would be great! Also your site doesn’t seem to use the Hybrid WordPress Theme, could you check if that’s the correct URL?

Thanks! I look forward to your reply and to being able to help ;) Sincerely, Jonathan
