Discussion on Ikebana - Masonry WordPress Portfolio Theme

149 comments found

Hi Satoridesign!

I like your theme and am considering this for an artist who makes high and narrow statues. I have folliwing pre-purchase question:

In your demo the portfolio overview has all square size images. Can the images in the portfolio of this theme also be set to a different (portrait) size?

Thanks for your advise!

Regards, Monique

satoridesign

Hey Monique,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

One can upload images of any dimensions into Ikebana’s portfolio items, and they will be displayed proportionally inside the project item, yet in the masonry grid itself (corresponds to the front page in the demo) the items can only be square – thus the images will be cropped to best fit the smaller and larger squares of the grid. Given your artwork proportions, I would thus not recommend using the theme to showcase your work unless you are ready to pay extra to a freelancer for customizing the theme and creating a 2×1 tile for the portfolio grid.

Thank you very much for your quick and clear advise Andrii!

Hey Andrew,

Small final problem. The Excerpts aren’t visible on the portfilio page although we have filled them out. Could you please check it out? Thanks!

Alok www.collaborative-policy.com/v2/

satoridesign

Hey Alok,

the excerpts aren’t visible because the body text has been set to black and the portfolio item overlays have black backgrounds. You can either change the overlay background color using the “Project box overlay background color” option in the “Portfolio Page” tab of the Theme Options panel, or insert a piece of CSS into the “Style: Add Custom CSS” tab of the Theme Options panel, making the excerpt text color lighter: .iso-masonry .image-post-overlay p { color: #cccccc !important; }

Please let me know if this solves the situation!

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

worksmith

I changed the overlay colour quite a few times, but it refuses to change!

Thanks for taking the time out to assist me with this Andrii.

Best, Alok

satoridesign

Alright, my apologies, that option controls the overlay box; please use the following CSS code instead: .image-post-overlay { background-color: #cccccc !important; }

replacing the ”#cccccc” with the hex value of a color you need.

Hi Satori Studios,

where can i find an example how to use your shortcodes exact. I tried to do 3 Tabs as in your examplepage but it does not work. And if i press Demo 404 appears? How do i use the shortcodes?

Best Mark

satoridesign

Hey Mark,

the shortcodes, together with usage examples, are listed in Appendix 2 of the theme manual. Moreover, I would highly recommend using the built-in shortcode generator tool, since it eliminates the possibility of making a typo.

Finally, just in case, I’ve uploaded a text file with the shortcodes from the “Shortcodes” page of the theme demo here.

Andrii / Satori Studio

Hello,

First of all, just wanted to say this is a very nice and flexible theme! I’ve already played with it and it seems to have almost everything I need. I do have a couple of questions, though (at least for now ;) ):

1. I may be missing something obvious, but it sounds like this theme only allows two image sizes on portfolio pages, namely standard and large (2x the standard size). However, on this page in your demo (http://satoristudio.net/ikebana/tag-portfolio/portfolio), it seems to be otherwise. Could you provide some guidance on how to have images of various sizes on a portfolio page like the one in your demo?

2. Is it possible to use my own custom fonts instead of the Google fonts?

Thanks in advance for your help!

satoridesign

Hey there,

first of all, thank you for the purchase!

I will go over the questions in the same order:

1). the portfolio items in Ikebana do come in two sizes, the small and the larger squares. The 2×1 rectangle on the page you’ve linked to is an automatically generated container for the portfolio tag information, because this page is a portfolio tag archive; if you click on the left icon menu items on that page, you can see that the rectangle is a standard construction generated on each of these archive pages. The portfolio page itself (i.e. the front page in the case of theme demo) only has square tiles. I am planning to add more size options in the next version update, yet I still need some time to finalize the implementation.

2). The theme admin back-end does not envisage such option so far, yet it is relatively easy to achieve using a small amount of additional code: please see this or this tutorial for an example.

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

Thanks, Andrii! Looking forward to an updated version in the future that supports multiple image sizes. :)

Hi Guys

Love this theme and im ready to go live shortly. I have just one thing to do. Can i hide some of the posts from the home page.

I have to many displayed and want to have 5 posts in a menu on another page but have the featured image displayed on the home page. Possible? Cheers Chris

satoridesign

Hey Chris,

could you clarify what exactly you mean by same gallery as per the posts? (a URL to a page with an example would be even better :))

Best,
A. / Satori Studio

HI Andrii, url is, http://membership-plus.co.uk/2014/project/federation-of-small-businesses-fsb/

This is the page and gallery, as you can see the case study side bar is to the right. The client wants to access the case studies in only this way and not as i have set it up as a second page of posts on the home page.

Can you help? I am looking forward to the Shogun theme.

Chris

satoridesign

As far as I can see, you’re not using the classic WordPress blog on the website – so you could create the case studies as blog posts instead of projects – would that be an option? Blog posts also have formats in Ikebana, so you can include the sliders into them.

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

Hi there, we’re seriously considering purchasing this theme for our portfolio site – love the look, style and usability! It looks great.

I’d just like to clarify how flexible it will be to alter the design visually?

So for instance, having the background all white, all over the page so the only colour comes from the masonry images, the text / links and logo.

And also editing the top bar – for instance we may want to take off the side navigation and just have the navigation along the top with a deeper header. Is that doable?

Also, I’d like to play with having our logo along the top in that header rather than in a box in the main section of the home page so that the boxes will all be work or quotes etc. Is that doable and how flexible will it be for me to edit the code to make these changes?

While we love the style and design and the work which has gone into the theme, we’re keen to make it our own as we’re a design agency – so its important for us to be able to customise the look and feel :-)

Many thanks, Anna

Default-user

Sorry if I’m not being clear Andrii…

By the top bar I’m referring to the top grey box which includes the links to ‘Home’, ‘Features’, ‘Layouts’ etc and the social media buttons etc.

I was just wondering if it’s possible to alter the height (width is fine) of this so I could fit a logo within that area because at the moment it would be too shallow / not tall enough. Hope that’s clearer?! :-)

Thanks, Anna

satoridesign

Hey Anna,

now I see :) There’s a setting in the theme’s Options Panel where you can assign any height to the top menu section, in pixels.

Fantastic, many thanks Andrii – that all sounds great. It looks like we’ll be going ahead with the purchase so looking forward to getting started with it!

Thanks for your swift replies too!

All the best, Anna

Hi there. I purchased your theme. I am having trouble displaying the tag cloud widget. It is blank despite having tags in the portfolio section. I am aware there are “Posts -> Tags” or “Portfolio -> Tags” in the drop down option. I have selected/switch both options and still see no tags.

My website is here > http://aligns.adamsetia.com/project/jaye-carcary/

satoridesign

Hey Adamsetia,

first of all, thank you for the purchase!

This issue has already been reported a short while ago, possibly WordPress has made some changes to its tag cloud widget. I’ve prepared a fix – please download this archive, unzip it, and upload the resulting file into the theme folder (/wp-content/themes/Ikebana/), replacing the existing file. Let me know if it fixes the problem!

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

Default-user

Thanks that update fixed the problem! Another question I have, is how can I do a corner stamp on one of the portfolio entries like here >http://isotope.metafizzy.co/custom-layout-modes/masonry-corner-stamp.html thank you Andrii!

satoridesign

Hey Adam,

the corner stamp Isotope feature hasn’t been included into the theme for aesthetical reasons; in order to implement it in Ikebana, you’d need to modify the code that invokes the Isotope, situated in the “header-functions.php” file (line 656 and below), by adding the “cornerStampSelector” as noted on the demo page you’ve mentioned. The second part would be adding the corner stamp element itself, which can be done in the “page_portfolio.php” template file.

Andrii / Satori Studio

Hi,

I am considering using your theme for my magazine website (http://www.becreativemag.com). I hv a few queries: —Can I customize the fonts for all h1,h2, etc, block txts, body txt etc? —I want to display my magazine posts as a masonry grid. Can I set the homepage to a static page with masonry layout and display posts on that? —Will the theme have space to display a header & logo for the website?

The primary reason why I want to change the current theme is because I want to be able to customize the fonts easily and improve the page load time and overall performance. Will using ur theme help me there?

Thanks,

Cheers, ~Arti Agarwal

satoridesign

Hey Arti,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

I will go over your questions in the same order:

1). In Ikebana, you can choose a separate Google Font for the body text, the titles, and the menu.

2). The masonry layout in Ikebana is a portfolio, so it has its own custom post type called “projects”. These display automatically on the portfolio page. The classic WP blog posts are also available, yet they do not display on the masonry, rather on the more classic blog page (see demo here). In all other ways the projects are identical to the blog posts. The front page can be a static page, with any template, including the portfolio template, just like in the theme demo ;)

3). There is a space for logo, as can be seen on the blog page I’ve linked to earlier; the logo area can have adjustable height. There is not separate “header” area apart from the ones seen on the theme demo website; adding it would require some custom work on the theme (not covered by the ThemeForest support offer, for the sake of clarity).

Your existing website does indeed have a rather slow loading sequence (see test results here), yet this is mostly due to the large amount of images, and certain scripts (e.g. mootools). The images part is more dependent on how well you optimize and downsample your images before uploading to the website.

Overall, in my opinion your website looks well already, and I am not sure that using Ikebana (which is visually quite close to what you have) will add a lot of value, but the final decision is of course for you to make :)

Andrii / Satori Studio

Hey Deliopk,

Hello I’d like to purchase the ikebana theme for a client… do you offer custom coding to make a change happen? I’d like the articles on the site to pop open like they do on http://www.inkedgirls.com/pinche/365597/

Default-user

as well could we get the social sharing links into the photo popup/gallery. pinterest/fb/etc

satoridesign

Hey Holybauhaus,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

The features you mention can be added to the theme with some changes in the theme’s php and css code; since these are not envisaged as back-end out-of-the-box features, they’re considered theme customizations and are not covered by the ThemeForest support offer. I can recommend Envato’s Microlancer as a source of WordPress experts who can accomplish any customization you need.

I do provide free support for all questions regarding theme set up and features, of course – you can either contact me here or post a topic on my forums.

Should you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me!

Andrii / Satori Studio

Hi Satoridesign,

I just uploaded the theme to our Wordpress but the site is configured to the blog style. How do I change it to the squares and panels style?

satoridesign

Hey LandmarkStyles,

first of all, thank you for the purchase! Please create a new page, make it a “Portfolio” template, and save it; next, go to the “Settings -> Reading” admin menu and declare the newly created page above as the static front page. You can find further information on setting up the portfolio on pages 4-6 of the theme manual.

Should you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me!

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

Hi there, we’ve recently bought the Ikebana theme and really happy so far, thank you.

I’m having a bit of trouble with adding a logo to the header. Even if I input the pixel width of the jpg, it looks like the logo is being enlarged when it gets to the header box so its getting pixellated and chopped off. Logo file is as it should be – 72dpi and RGB etc.

Do you have any suggestions please?

Many thanks, Anna

Default-user

I’ll add in what I did in case it’s helpful for others:

The logo will automatically fill to fit the height of the header box so I changed the height of the header box to be exactly the same as the logo and it worked a treat.

I’m playing around with adding a border at the top. Not sure if it’s necessary at this stage but say the logo is 50 px, and I want there to be a border at the top of 20 px, I add 20 px of white to the logo file and make the header height/depth 70 px.

Cheers, Anna

satoridesign

Hello, is there a way to have a portfolio page filtered by project tags without using the left icon menu?

In my design I’m already using the left icon menu but there are some cases where I would like to have portfolio page that displays only selected tags.

Thanks & Cheers Ruben :)

satoridesign

Hey Ruben,

first of all, thank you for the purchase!

If I understood you correctly, the thing you need is the automatically generated portfolio tag archive page: Ikebana creates one for each portfolio tag you create, and it looks like this: www.example.com/tag-portfolio/[tag]

Please let me know if this works or if you needed something else entirely :)

Thanks, yes it worked the solution was in front of my eyes but I was looking in another direction

Hi,

My client is just about to purchase this theme. I have 2 questions. 1. Is it possible to remove the icons menu and just have a text only menu with dropdowns (on the left)? 2. Can the text boxes link to pages/posts?

I look forward to hearing from you.

satoridesign

Hey Elbobiam,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

I will answer the questions in the same order: 1). Yes, the icon menu is auxiliary – it can be created via the Theme Options panel, but the theme functions as intended without it as well. 2). The masonry grid, as seen on the front page of the demo, is only inherent to the Portfolio template in Ikebana – the classic WP blog looks differently. Normally, the boxes that constitute the grid are formed by projects, which is a separate custom content type apart from classic blog posts, thus the boxes normally link to their respective projects. However, projects (as well as posts) support several formats, including the “link” format, which allows linking to any internal or external URL from any box, including other posts or pages.

Should you have more questions about the theme, do not hesitate to contact me.

Andrii / Satori Studio

For some reason the gallery don’t work in Internet Explorer: http://www.bdg.co.il/en/project/speedo/

Why is it?

Thanks…

satoridesign

Hey Beaverglobal,

I’ve tested the website you’ve linked to in IE11 (screen), IE10 (screen), and IE9 (screen), and the gallery project seems to be working fine in all of the above. Could you please let me know if the problem is still topical? Thanks!

Hello, is there a way to define a default tag filter for the portfolio page? So that only selected projects are shown on landing page.

Thanks & Cheers Ruben

satoridesign

Hey Ruben,

In theory, this should be possible to set up, yet there is not out-of-the-box setting in Ikebana for that. You’d need to look at lines 696-700 in the “header-functions.php” theme file and create an analogous call yet which fires on document ready instead of mouse click, and which affects only a specific filter tag.

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

Hi satoridesign, we are an agency and buy very regular themes on theme forest. We check for the new website of a customer the theme ‘Ikebana’ that we like very much. In order to evaluate it finally here is my question: Is it possible to get access to the backend, to have a short view into the layout options? Sincerely yours Michael

satoridesign

Hey Michael,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

Please email me at support@satoristudio.net, I will send you the login information of a trial website, where you will be able to edit all content types are well as access the Theme Options panel and change website settings.

How I can translate Portfolio with plugin WPML?

Thanks

satoridesign

Hey Teclat,

first of all, thank you for the purchase!

Could you please clarify – would you like to learn how to translate the entire website into another language, or just a single text string? OR did you encounter particular difficulties while working with WPML on your website?

Sorry but I have found the solution. Thanks anyway for your help.

hi i like so much your plugin but i ask if you there is a plugin that works with your template and if it supports membership and people can post just like pinterest.. thank you so much

satoridesign

Hey Cahoud2011,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

In general, there do exist membership plugins, and Ikebana works fine with most of third-party extensions. In case of any compatibility issues I will be glad to help restore the smooth cooperation between the theme and the plugin. As to a particular plugin to recommend for your situation – I’m afraid I have none from the top of my head, I’d advise looking in the official plugin repository. Alternatively, you could simply allow new users to register on the website as authors/contributors, this does not depend on the theme.

Should you have additional questions about Ikebana, do not hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio

hi people, good job with the ikebana theme, i have a presale questions. Can the tiles of the mosaic link directly to wordpress pages? the featured image can be on the tile? Is it WPML compatible?

Thanks.

satoridesign

Hey Mvalles,

thank you for expressing interest in my work!

I will go over the questions in the same order:

1). Yes, tiles with “link” project format can link to any URL, including website’s internal pages/posts.

2). The masonry tile backgrounds are sourced from featured images, so – yes :)

3). Ikebana hasn’t been officially tested with WPML, yet all theme text strings are wrapped in the proper translation functions __() and _e(). In case you decide to you them together and encounter any problems, I will be glad to help sort them out.

Should you have additional questions about the theme, do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Andrii / Satori Studio
