Hi.

The portfolio projects should not get lost when updating

This theme is fantastic! I searched for about three weeks looking through hundreds of different themes for my photography site, and narrowed it down to Immersion and a few others. Besides the great elements of the site, what made the difference to me was the nearly immediate response to my pre-sales questions. I asked a few rounds of questions, and they were responded to extremely quickly. I then purchased the template, which was easy to use. I then had a round of additional questions (actually about ten!), and each was answered within a few hours. Impressive. This is a fantastic template where questions were answered nearly immediately and with full detailed solutions.

This theme isn’t working with the latest version of wordpress. Any suggestions?

PixelBook

Hi.

The current version 1.6 is compatible with wp 3.8.

Version 1.7 is almost finished and will be compatible with the latest version of wordpress.

Can you specify what issues are you having with the theme and wp 3.9?

Thanks

So…since many of you who have bought this template well know, unfortunately the author of this theme is very passive about his support. This does not come from a vindictive or angry place…more a place of professionalism and courtesy (historically PixelBook has made it very clear he is not interested in running support – which of course he is not obligated to, but should realize he could practically quadruple his sales if he cared).

So assuming that Pixelbook will not address these questions so I reach out to the base of users here since as many of you have, I’ve invested hundreds of hours into this theme and won’t have a chance to rebuild it on a better theme until Fall.

I was very happy to see that 1.6 finally has some features that really are great…(Kudos, and thank you Pixelbook for not abandoning the theme as we all thought you had).

A couple of questions that I’m hoping Pixelbook (or the forum might be able to help me with):

1.Portrait Orientation / Full Screen: I see that a picture with portrait orientation will go full screen and a black background will take up the rest of the space on the left and right (which is exactly what should happen). But this does not happen when you expand a portrait oriented picture from a photo gallery. The picture scales and gets cutoff. I cannot understand why the author would not have considered this when building, but I’m hoping since it occurs in the full screen gallery, it can be replicated across the rest of the site. Anybody have any suggestions or know where this could be modified?

2. Retina Images: In the themes documentation it reads “if you upload an image with the width of 300 pixels and you select a width of 100 pixels, the theme will create a 100 pixels image for standard devices and then a 200 pixels image for retina devices”. Well, I have uploaded the logo (and other images) in all types of resolutions and sizes, scaled it many ways, and STILL cannot get any logo or png files to display at high res. Would anyone have any recommendations to make this work?

3. Adding a slideshow into a Section: The demo theme advertises (and shows) that a slideshow can be added to a section. Again, as Pixelbooks documentation is NOT comprehensive nor complete I have not found anyway to do this via the theme interface or even trying to get the code by importing the dummy xml content. Any suggestions on how to do this?

4. Fullwidth Google Maps:The demo theme advertises that it can do a fullwidth Google map (see contact page on live demo). Awesome…but again…not documentation or xml demo content to even know where to start with this.

5. Fullscreen Portrait Orientation on Tablets / Smartphones: On my ipad, if I am on portrait orientation, the top of screen, fullscreen gallery shrinks up and does not fill the screen. I understand that many would want this, but for consistency (and so the captions don’t get all crushed up) I’d want this to not scale like it did in the previous theme. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

6. Captions Not Scaling Down EnoughThe captions look pretty dang good, but I’m wanting them to scale a bit more on mobile. Is there any way to scale this further. I tried to modify Responsive.css but it did not work.

7. Font Awesome The homepage of the demo shows how font awesome has been integrated. Again awesome, and I’m sure I can figure it out, but not a hint of even how to do that (documentation or xml demo content).

I do apologize for the length of this post, however it’s safe to say these are issues that other users are having and I hope won’t just help me, but all of us be able to use this theme that we’ve invested so much time into. Pixelbook, I mean no disrespect for the preface of this post. It’s honest…and frankly most of everyone’s frustration in my opinion comes from wanting to use the theme (since it really IS fantastic), but the lack of documentation and responsiveness from you over the years has been disappointing. I think I speak for us all in saying we really hope you can step that up in the next version 1.7 so we can all take full advantage of this themes great features, and in doing so even relive you from all the redundant questions that you are probably asked everyday.

Thanks all!

Hi there

1. I’ve actually implemented two options in the admin panel what will be added to version 1.7. These are the fit_landscape and fit_portrait. Fit portrait will allow portrait images to be exapanded (so without black vertical bars).

Until the new release, this post will give you an idea how to modify the fullscreen slideshow

http://bookofpixels.com/support/?ticket=fly-in-off-no-white-box-arrow-footer-content-submenu-no-crop-image#li-comment-1234

Basically you need to set the fit_always to 0

PixelBook

2. I will investigate this issue further and try to provide a fix in the next update. In the meantime you can open up a ticket on the support forum with your website.

PixelBook

3. You can see an example of this shortcode in the page called ‘Homepage’ (when you import the xml file). You need to use the ‘slide’ shortcode nested in the ‘section’ shortcode

[section]

[slide]

<p>your content here</p>

[/slide]

[slide]

<p>your content for the second slide</p>

[/slide]

[/section]

for example this will create a slideshow with 2 slides. The paragraphs can be replaced with any other shortcodes (for example columns, just like in the demo)

PixelBook

4. the full width google maps will be added to v1.7 along with the documentation. You can’t add them in 1.6

PixelBook

5. What you need to do is open up immersion/js/uncompressed/custom.js file. Search for these lines

$(window).resize(function() {

if ($(window).width() > 768) { $supersized_wrap.css({'height': $(window).height() - $header.height(), 'min-height':'none'}); }
else { $supersized_wrap.css({'height': 'auto', 'min-height':$(window).width()*0.75}); }

}).trigger('resize');

this code basically says that when the screen width gets above 768, the slideshow’s height will fill the entire height of the browser height minus the header height. If the screen gets below 768 pixels this feature gets disabled.

So you can change from 768 to 767 or below and save the file.

Also you must put the newly created file in immersion/js folder (and overwrite the compressed file). If you leave the file in the uncompressed folder the changes will not take effect

PixelBook

6. Unfortunately on smaller screens the captions are limited to the available width or height of the slide they are placed so they have limited space. Currently, normal text like paragraphs has a font size of 12px and I don’t think you can decrease this value any more without compromising readability.

Headings, on the other side, can be decreased a little.

I have added an option in the admin panel that will allow to set a value for headings fonts on smaller screens. For example if you set this value to 50% a heading h2 with a standard font size of 40px will have 20px on smaller screens. A 100% value will do nothing

PixelBook

7, you can add an icon pretty much everywhere on the site with the i tag. Check out the examples here

http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/examples/

And the list of icons here (without the 71 New Icons in version 4.1 of fontawesome)

http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icons/

So on the demo page I have added these i tags in the Description field of the first slide. Like this

I’ve also wrapped them in a div tag with a class of ‘icon’, so this way you can aligm them to the left (float them to the left)

PixelBook…I can’t tell you how appreciative I am for your prompt responses to my questions!

Default-user

1. So I followed these instructions very closely… modified the theme-functions and set the fit always to 0, and added custom css. Unfortunately this did change anything (even after refreshing my cache 3 times). Just in case there was any confusion, when you click on a thumbnail gallery any portrait orientated image goes full screen horizontally, making it zoomed in way too much and cropping off the bottom part of picture. Please let me know if I missed something.

Also, love the option to pause a slideshow over hover…it does not look like this code works on a fullscreen slideshow on a page (i.e. homepage). I’ve had a lot of people want to be able to pause this somehow when I’m reviewing an image with them. Not as important as the image cropping, but any chance this is a possibility?

Default-user

2. Great. Appreciate that. One observation, I’m seeing even the forward and back images on the homepage even look pixelated on a retina screen (I’m on a new iPad Air) so I’m wondering if there is something global that needs to be adjusted.

Default-user

3. I see…I will give that a shot.

Default-user

4. Bummer…okay, I’ll standby. You may consider not showing that until 1.7 is released. That was one of a number of items that I saw on the demo (which we will assume shows all the capabilities of 1.6) and was excited about that led me to update my theme…bummer that won’t be available yet. Any specific date for 1.7? :)

Default-user

5. This worked great on my iPad…thank you. However, it does not seem to effect what I see on a smartphone (deleted cache 3 times). Any ideas?

Default-user

6. Yes, I only am looking to decrease the size of the larger elements, not the body text. I looked to see where you can adjust that in the admin panel…and couldn’t see where that is. Could let me know where that is specifically?

Default-user

7. Awesome…I’ll give that a shot.

Default-user

Again, thanks in advance for your responses…hoping to get these items fixed for good.

Default-user

Sorry, one other question…in a portfolio project page, is there a way to display a portfolio project page without having to show a quote, image, video, audio, etc. so you can just begin the page with a project title? I know you can do this if you don’t have a featured image, but I need to have a featured image to have the entry in my featured or new projects navigation. Thanks!

PixelBook

1. when setting the fit_always variable to 0 it prevents the images from ever being cropped (landscape or portrait). Setting fit_portrait to 0 will prevent portrait images from being cropped (the default is 1)

PixelBook

4. if I don’t encounter any more issues I will submit the update to envato reviewers this week

PixelBook

5. what value did you modify in the custom.js file?

PixelBook

6. currently in the admin panel you can set font-sizes, line-heights, letter spacings, text transforms, and font weights for all of the 6 headings. However this values are being applied to all screen sizes. Like I’ve said version 1.7 will add an option to descrease on smaller screens font-sizes by a ratio.

PixelBook

On the portfolio edit page there’s an option called ‘Display post format’

when you toggle off, the post format (quotes, video, audio etc) will no longer be displayed on the project page.

Default-user

1. Okay, so basically what your saying is that I need to wait till v 1.7 where there WILL be a fit_portrait function that I can set to 0? Please correct me if I am wrong, but unless your saying to add the fit_portrait function, there currently there is currently no fit_portrait function in theme_functions…correct? When I click on a gallery thumb the image(s) open in a full screen slideshow so I was a little confused when you said it could be modified in the meantime.

Default-user

4. Great…

Default-user

5. Per your instructions I changed the 768 value to 767…do I need to choose a lower number for it to work on the smartphone?

Default-user

6. This will be a great feature….many templates do not have that type of preference so that will be a great addition and welcomed by many.

Default-user

Portfolio Page Title: awe…shoulda seen that. Thanks.

PixelBook

1. you can manually add the line

fit_portrait: 0,

in theme-functions.php

5. basically you change it to 0. So now on all screen sizes the slideshow’s height will be your screen height minus the header height.

Default-user

1. So this is what I have added to theme-functions and it does not appear to be changing anything:

transition_speed : 800, // Speed of transition pause_hover : 1, fit_always : 0, fit_portrait : 0, keyboard_nav : 1,

IF I change fit always to 1, then my landscape images do not go flush to the edges of screen (which is very important), so unless I’ve got something in the code wrong I guess I’ll just have to wait for the update. Bummer, since it works on the fullscreen galleries on pages, but not when you click on a thumbnail of a gallery that has been inserted into a page via short code.

PixelBook

Hi.

I’m happy to say that version 1.7 is now available for download :). I hope you will solve the portrait issue with the new options availabe in the admin panel

Thanks

Default-user

Hey PixelBook,

Great News. I’ve gone ahead and installed the update and see the new lightbox tab. However, when I saved the settings and tested in the gallery it still zooms. I’ve gone back 3 times and selected fit however, it appears that after you save the setting and leave theme options the setting returns back to zoom.

Dang, this is all I needed to push the new site live so if you could let us know if there is a fix I’d sure appreciate it.

Default-user

Also, I followed the instructions carefully, but it appears that there might be an issue with the new contact page too. The fullwidth page area shows up, but the google map never populates into the space….just a big gray block. Any suggestions?

Default-user

I’m not sure why but after I installed the 3 plugins the theme recommends the fit function works. This is great, however…I really love my landscape images going completely flush to the screen like the fullscreen slideshow on the pages. Would something like this possibly work?

fit_landscape: 0,

The way the fullscreen slideshows work is exactly what I’m looking for…where the portrait shots fit flush vertically and the landscape shots fill the screen flush both vertically and horizontally.

Thanks for all your help and the update Pixelbook.

PixelBook

Hi.

It was probably a cache issue when it didn’t work the first time.

Have you entered the coordinates for the map? They are located in the metabox below the text editor. Make sure you set the zoom level too.

In theory, an image can’t always fit both vertically and horizontally on all screen sizes. There has to be some sort of cropping to create this effect (even landscape images from the slideshow are cropped a little on the sides). So now you have set the lightbox to ‘fit’ and the portrait images look ok, but the landscape ones have black bars and you don’t want that.

So I think I know what you really want to achieve. You want a combination of these two.

I’ll try to customize the lightbox for you even further and post a article on the support forum shortly.

Thanks

Default-user

Awesome…

The scaling works perfect….and I really appreciate you taking the time to modify this for me (and hopefully others who might want the same functionality).

Interestingly, my map is now working. Yesterday I had the coordinates in, zoom level set, contact template selected and had deleted the cache a number of times. I guess both this and the lightbox preference needed a minute to reset, but ultimately everything seems to be working great and I can’t wait to get the new site live.

I’m starting to feel bad about all the support questions but I think I’m just about set and can’t wait to leave you alone…I’ve got a couple last items that I wanted to follow up on and I’m hopefully could be really easy:

1. Retina Images (#2 on initial list). Wondering if you found anything on this or if you had any suggestions on getting my logo to show up at the higher resolution. I’m using a logo that is 400 px wide @72 dpi and setting it to show at 200 px wide and it’s still showing blurry.

2. Font Colors. I had changed this is the quick css, and then in the base.css, but oddly after a day they changed back to black. I’m just wanting to soften the text a little with a dark gray. Any suggestions?

3. I’m now implementing a contact form in the new contact page…I’ve never been successful getting an email to show up…it says it has sent successfully, but nothing (checked spam and junk filters, etc). I know this issue can be a bit sticky with all the email configurations (I’m using a gmail email so I believe my setup is pretty standard) Is there a place you have addressed on your forum about this or are there any special configurations I need to make with my hosting?

These updates and your quick responsiveness have made all the difference and are breathing new life into my site…thank you very much PixelBook for your support!

PixelBook

Hi.

1. try setting the logo to 199px wide (or uploading a logo with a width higher than 400 pixels in your case).

2. when customizing the theme it’s best that you use the custom css texfield in the admin panel. The base.css got replaced when you updated the theme. Anyway the css syntax to change the color of the headings is

h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {
    color : #123456;
}

3. try using this file (here) and replace mail.php located in the theme folder.

Is there any way to change the color of the google map?

PixelBook

Hi.

You can navigate to immersion/js/jquery.gmap.js and look for the line of code

var style=[{"featureType":"all","stylers":[{"saturation":-100},{"gamma":0.8}]}];

you can change this line with another style from sites like http://snazzymaps.com

Thanks

How do you animate the captions on the homepage slider? I noticed that the captions in the demo swipe/fade from various directions.

PixelBook

Hi.

You just need to make sure that you use columns when you edit the Description field. Otherwise the theme won’t know to animate the captions.

For example this is how the caption from the first slide of the demo looks

Hi,

I have encountered a problem with the Immersion theme on ios devices. When using a slideshow of images if you swipe sideways it is good and goes to the next picture, but if you swipe slightly diagonal or up then down then the slideshow freezes. Hope you can fix in future updates. Thank you.

Hi.

You can download the theme from Themeforest and upload to your wordpress installation.
