Hello,

I have been working at trying to see what is wrong with the new version of wordpress 3.1 that was released on Tuesday.

I have posted all over the internet to try to track down the issues. Waiting to see if anyone else can help out. There are a TON of other people that are in this same boat which makes me think that it is something with WP and they might have a 3.1.1 release any day to fix it. I have even tried to just revert to the default theme (20/20) and it has the same issues.

NO Luck yet. I recommend to anyone using this theme at this point to NOT upgrade to 3.1 until the issue has been fixed.

I will keep you posted as i work through the issues over the next couple days.

Again, This is working PERFECT in 3.0.4 and is what I recommend you remain using until further notice.

Thank you for your patience.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the WP 3 .1 issue.

On another note..

Can you help me out with a comment.php mod?

  • I have comment moderation enabled globally
  • By default, a new users role is a subscriber (level_0 ??)
  • I would like to disable comment moderation for TRUSTED users by changing their role to contributor (level_1) in the user admin or similar.

Can this be done easily?

I’ve tried changing the “moderate_comment” to “level_2” but he effect is reversed…. subscriber is approved and contributor is held for moderation.

See below.

if ( isset($userdata) && ( $user_id == $post_author || $user->has_cap('moderate_comments') ) ) {
    // The author and the admins get respect.
    $approved = 1;
 } else {
    // Everyone else's comments will be checked.
    if ( check_comment($comment_author, $comment_author_email, $comment_author_url, $comment_content, $comment_author_IP, $comment_agent, $comment_type) )
        $approved = 1;
    else
        $approved = 0;
    if ( wp_blacklist_check($comment_author, $comment_author_email, $comment_author_url, $comment_content, $comment_author_IP, $comment_agent) )
        $approved = 'spam';
}

=================

Hope this makes sense!

Cheers, Geary

I appreciate the note! It is hard to get over the fact that Wordpress would do something like this. In the 10+ years i have used Wordpress they have NEVER done anything to this magnitude. I sure hope that they fix the issue very soon.

I have helped others in the past by wrapping sections of code with this WP function: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/current_user_can

It will allow you to check if the current logged in user can do certain actions. You can wrap this around the comment form to hide it or you could just display a generic message to them like: An admin will answer your question as soon as we can.

A side note, you should be setting default users to be Authors as described in the Theme setup instructions. So if you want to create or upgrade a set of users to become “experts” then you can manage them in edit-users.php in wp-admin and upgrade them to be tagged as, Editors. this will keep them out of your admin stuff and allow them to be more then just site users.

Let me know if you have any other questions at this time.

Default-user

Thanks, i’ll check out the Current_user_can function later.

About allowing only trusted users comments to be approved…

I set the default user role to “author”, although I’ve done testing with both “author” and “subscriber” roles and it doesn’t seem to make a difference when submitting a question or answer.

Also, a users first post is held for moderation (by me setting – Comment author must have a previously approved comment), but every post after that is automatically approved.

I would like all comments moderated with the default user role and only after I change or upgrade a users role can he/she post comments without moderation.

I see what you are asking for…

Currently there is not a mechanism (in my add new answer function) to check these settings when an answer is posted. I basically let any user that is signed up post questions and answers.

You would need to set the comment status based on the user type. Then i think the code would automatically hide the comment that have not been approved.

If i have time this weekend i will look into this for you. I cant promise you anything at this time since i have bigger fish to fry.

Hope you understand.

Go easy on the guy, everyone who updated to WP 3 .1 with custom permalink structures is having this problem. There is also a list of plug-ins that are known to cause 404’s. Basically anything that modifies links structure… so make sure you disable those as well if we get this fixed.

Thank you for making such an excellent theme. It’s well worth the money.

Here is what i’m contributing to help:

It’s not necessarily a problem with this theme. The problem is with the lack of WordPress support for permalink structure that was chosen.

The permalink structure we use for this template is: / category / postname /

WordPress Codex says not to use it (But quite frankly I believe it’s the best possible URL structure for SEO and usability purposes).

My suggestions to the creator to fix this theme:

1.) I found an example for a very similar problem with 404’s on custom post types. http://tinyurl.com/ybywn3w

OR

2.) Use one of the recommended permalink structures (could also require some changes to the theme files)

Other than than, I’ve got nothing. I’m going back to 3.0.4. I think i read in earlier comments that it worked fine on that version.

Here is a TRAC ticket on the WP 3 .1 permalink 404 issue: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/16662

esterndesign

@ap: THanks for the support in helping to track down the issue.

I have spent about 12 hours on this since yesterday trying to track down the issue.

Thanks for the TRAC #, it is funny that you mention it, most of the forum links are my worpdress help discussions with @Ipstenu.

I am glad that he escalated this to hopefully be fixed.

I was hoping that it wasn’t the theme (still have my fingers crossed that it isnt) and more of a wp 3.1 issue but we will see.

I am going to dive into the theme pages to see what is causing this issue.

This has been a real stumper of a problem so far.

I will keep everyone posted through the weekend as i try to track it down.

As stated before, I WOULD NOT GO TO WP 3 .1 at this point. Stay working great in 3.0.4 or 3.0.5. If you have gone to 3.1, i would recommend that you revert back if you can to prevent broken category pages and post links.

I hope to have an answer for everyone as soon as i can.

Hello-nice theme

How large a database has anyone gone with this?

I would imagine its similar to an article directory

:)

esterndesign

Thanks for the feedback…

You could go pretty large. Wordpress is pretty good about sites with a lot of content.

PLus since most of the questions are relatively small from a content prospective data querys are pretty fast.

I have yet to see someone with millions of questions…. Could at some point but i would think that most sites would have hundreds or thousands of questions without any issues.

-esterndesign

I hope so,Im just waiting for the upgrade to WP 3 .1 I notice quite a lot of commotion on different forums re custom permalink structures,and not just regarding your theme

esterndesign

Yah the bug was submitted yesterday for the wp 3.1.1 update that i hope comes out very soon.

I know there are a lot of others that are in the same boat.

Hi,

Is there a way we can enable referral bonus points and top question rating based points

Thanks

esterndesign

I am sorry to say that this is not a feature that is currently available with this theme.

You would need to do some custom code work to get this to work. It is something that i might think about adding into a later release though.

GOOD NEWS !

I solved the issue and to be honest it was such a small bug it wasn’t funny. I spent quite a few hours trying to track down the issue and it was 1 line of code in functions.php…

So for anyone out there that is waiting for the fix, here are the immediate things you can do to either make your site fully function again or allow you to upgrade to wp 3.1:

STEP 1 : - In functions.php file found in your theme folder, you will see a line of code near the top near line 35 or so. It will read:

$wp_rewrite->flush_rules();

DELETE this line completely and save functions.php.

STEP 2 : - As admin log into you wp-admin, head over the the settings section for Permalinks. Once you get here just click the “Save Changes” button to rebuild your .htaccess file.

STEP 3 : DONE, that was easy right?

I can’t get over how simple it was after digging into it for hours. Somehow this was preventing custom permalinks from happening the way we need them to be done.

I did many hours afterwards testing every aspect of the theme to make sure it was fully compatible with wp 3.1. It is good to go.

So as of a few mins ago i submitted the updated files to TF to update the theme so when new people buy the theme it will be fixed already. This is not yet live and ready to download but will be within the next day or so. I will be updating everyone with another post to let them know that this has gone live.

BONUS FOR EVERYONE !

So for my boo boo i have decided to add in a couple features and fixes that might help out some of you out:

NEW – Instant Q&A will now support Question Tags. This means now when you ask a question you will have the option to add tags, this is not a required field. This also means that there are tag archive pages for sorting like posts by tag name.

UPDATED – Manage Pages Admin Link will now point to the correct place and work.

UPDATED – Footer Year will now change automatically when the new year rings in.

So that is all that i have to say for now but again I will update everyone when the updated files are live to either re-download (for the people that have already bought the theme) or for new people to buy!

Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime. I would be happy to assist anyone that needs help updating their theme with the wp 3.1 fix.

Regards,

-esterndesign

UPDATED FILES ARE READY TO DOWNLOAD OR BUY !!!!

THEME IS NOW WORKING IN WP 3 .1 PERFECTLY !

I just got the approval email from TF that the files are now live with the updates that fixed the wp 3.1 bug and the NEW ADDITIONS !

Again let me know if you have any questions.

Awesome, fix works for me!

On another completely unrelated matter:

I found a bit of a bug…. if you format the question / post with html (i.e. bold, italic, hotlink, etc…) on the WP backend, the front page that lists the latest questions can become messed up..

Each post on the main page is truncated…. if truncated in the middle of an open / close tag, the html tag is not closed properly and messes with all formatting and possibly the layout after that.

Here’s an example that will also show html tags:

This Q&A theme for wordpress rocks. It is well worth the investment and <strong>I highly recommend that you... </strong>

Disregard the closing tag above… it’s putting it there automatically

As you can see… the strong tag was opened… but the post is truncated before the tag was closed. All text after this point will now be bolded.

No big deal really… just need to watch your formatting. ;)

cheers, Geary.

esterndesign

Geary,

Glad the fix worked for you!

This is why i keep the text that is used in questions and answers to be raw text with no html. This is a problem with any theme that might have this type of execution too.

I would just ward against this and you wont have any issues.

Hello,

I was just wondering as I purchased this a little while ago if this has been updated for 3.1 and if there are any new features?

I was also wondering how to get the twitter/facebook etc toolbar on the about page and under the questions?

If you could let me know, thanks. Currently I have the older verion that runs on 3.0.5.

esterndesign

Hi,

Yes if you read my last couple comment posts you will find that this is now working in 3.1 and has a few new additions added.

Thanks for asking.

Hi, thanks for the answer,

What would be the best way to upgrade the my current site template to your new released template? I haven’t used wordpress too much and don’t want to damage/loose my site.

Any help on this would be appreciated! Thanks

esterndesign

Hi,

If you have not made any modifications to the theme files then you can just either:

- Remove the theme from your themes folder and then upload the new theme folder to the themes folder. Then go into your wp-admin themes and re-activate the Instant Q&A theme.

OR

- Just overwrite the files in the theme folder. You wont have to re-activate this way.

Best if done via an FTP client.

Should be about 2 mins either way you do it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards.

Is it possible to use another permalink structure than / category / postname /

I have a blog with 100.000+ articles (question/answeres) and I want to change the template to “instant q&a”, but I have the permalink structure / postname /

How can I prevent spam signups? Is there a possibility to add a capture?

esterndesign

Hi,

1.) You could add a captcha form to the sign up page. I think that there is a plugin out there to do this. You would need to manually add it to the signup.php template page though. Just need to add the php code snippet that the plugin will provide you with.

2.) If you wanted to have the permalink be just / postname / it would work just fine as well. The only thing that you will find that is if you have questions that are exactly the same they will start becoming -2 at the end etc. But out of the box you can use your other permalink structure. Just tested it. I prefer the inclusion of the category for better urls and seo.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Is it possible to for me to try this theme before I purchase it? Or to get a refund if I later decide it’s not what I need? Thanks.

esterndesign

You can demo the theme here:

http://wordpressqa.com/instant-qa/

login: demoUser / demoUser10

There are no refunds since this is handled via ThemeForest and not through me. Plus it is not much money to buy and well worth the purchase.

Another suggestion would be to read through the previous comments to see if any of you concerns were already asked about.

can i add extra login options like Facebook and twitter? cause some people get put off by the thought of having to register to a new thought so am trying to make their life easier :-)

esterndesign

Yes you can use plugins to do this. It creates twitter and or facebook buttons that when clicked ask for that users site login. Several users who have bought this theme use this method on top of normal registration. I dont know what the names are off the top of my head but i would head over to the wordpress plugins site or do a google search.

I have noticed something else as well. When you setup the site, it normally works with the permalink structure and many existing themes support permalinks on WP 3 .1 as well. However, when I move the site to Instant QA theme, something changes and it is not reverted back when moved into the old theme.

I strongly suggest that the theme code should be looked into.

esterndesign

binoykl,

Have you updated your theme with the new code that i released last weekend? I had the fix in there for the issue that was happening in wp 3.1.

Either read back through the comments to find the solution or re-download the updated code from TF and upload to your site.

If you have an other issue that is not fixed by the way i described please let me know. You were a little vague in your issue, if you could elaborate a bit more that would be great.

Esterndesign,

In fact, I have edited my message afterwards.. but unfortunately it did not not updated here. Better late than never, your update resolved the issues and there was a delay in getting it updated in the production system, which is of around 50 minutes (I think due to caching).

Thank you for the support.

I have 3 questions:

1. Is it possible to allow basic HTML in the comments or a wysiwyg-editor?

2. How can I enable (answer)postings for unregistered users?

3. I want to give users the possibility to post YouTube-videos. I want to use the embedly plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/embedly/). Is it possible to allow users to use embedly in the comment fields?

esterndesign

Hi,

1. You can remove the strip_tags function that i have in the post question or answer functions. This will allow any html to go through but i ward against it since it could lead to broken tags and then opens your db up to malicious scripts…

2. This is also not recommended… since point system would not work this way. Plus you would need to do a lot of coding to allow this type of system. This is beyond the standard support that i provide for this theme. Then you need to worry about spam protection even more and so on.

3. This plugin will not work with my theme. This plugin ads a widget to add videos on the wp-admin section when you add posts…

Thanks for the questions.
