Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Install the Kahlam WordPress theme

The folder ‘Kahlam’ will be located within the files that you downloaded from ThemeForest. There’s a bunch of folders that hold the .PSDs, the MarkUP, the plugins, and the Theme. Inside the theme folder will be the Kahlam theme. You’ll need to upload this folder to your themes directory, which is located in /wp-content/themes/. Your folder structure should now be /wp-content/themes/kahlam/. Now that you’ve uploaded the Kahlam theme, you can now login to your administrator area /wp-admin/ and activate the Kahlam theme.

Custom Page Templates

I’ve set out many custom page templates to make the Kahlam theme a lot more flexible. I’ve included the following templates within the WordPress theme Kahlam. The page templates are as follows: Default, archives, author, full width, site map and 404. To change the page template on any page, simply go to the page that you’d like to change and choose which page you’d like to use from the drop down menu. This drop down menu will be located on the right under ‘Template’.

Creating Posts/Featured Posts

Standard Posts: Creating a Standard post is just the same simple WordPress process. You create a post on the left of the WP admin area. I personally recommend that you setup a featured image for each post, this will make your posts stand out a lot more. Read below for more information.

Featured Images: To use a featured image (751×311) on your posts, it’s simple. What you have to do is click ‘Set featured image’ when creating a post within WordPress. This is at the bottom right of the creating a post page. Once you’ve clicked ‘Set featured image’ select a file, and then make sure the ‘size’ is ‘Full size’ and ‘Alignment’ is set to ‘None’. Once you’ve done this, remove the ‘Link URL ’ so that it’s not a clickable image, then click ‘Insert into Post’ and that’s it, you’re done.

Theme Options Panel

I’ve set out the Theme Options panel so that it’s easy to change anything. To get to the Theme Options you simply go into WordPress and under Appearance click ‘Theme Options’. Now that you’re on the theme options you have a numerous amount of options to change. From here you can change the following:

- Header colour
- Add an advertisement to the main header
- Change your social media links on the main header
- Change your social twitter feed on your footer
- Use a small or larger footer
- Disable the social sharing bar on the homepage
- Disable post tags and disable the author box on posts

How to remove the Tag Cloud Widget

To remove the tag cloud widget, you simply go into sidebar.php which is in the ‘Kahlam’ theme folder, and delete everything from Line 4 down to Line 17.

Why doesn’t my install look like the Theme demo?

This will be because you’ve most likely updated your plugins, do not update the plugins, they’re not to work with the current version of the theme.

Shall I update the plugins?

No. Do not update the plugins, the new plugins do not work with the current version of the Kahlam theme.
