In your documentation you are writing about sample dummy data, but I can’t find it in my download directory. Where it is? Can you send me the xml file?

EskiLabs

Hi ben,

There are several example templates in the documentation which show the markup (shortcodes) we used to build the example homepages and page templates seen in the online demo.

As for XML file, we’re currently updating it and it will be available shortly. If you could register on our support forum, we’ll be announcing it there and providing it for download soon. It’s also a good place to find answers and ask other questions. =)

I just uploaded the theme into Wordpress and I got this…

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_FUNCTION in /homepages/25/d466494201/htdocs/app476803670/wp-content/themes/Metrolium/backend/custom-post-types/custom-post-types.php on line 147

And I am not able to do anything with the wordpress now. I’m just stuck

EskiLabs

Hi InterviewSteam,

We have wrote a detailed answer to this question on the support page of the theme, found here: http://themeforest.net/item/metrolium-responsive-multipurpose-wp-theme/5018371/support

Hi, this looks like just the kind of theme I’m after – great job. Although it seems obvious, I just wanted to check a couple of things: a) is it possible to pull in blog items on the home page from different categories (it looks from your Magazine style home page that you’re able to, but I wanted to be sure) b) I see that the header is widgetised so we can include things to the right of the logo. I have an unusual requirement in that I will need to include one large logo on the left, and three smaller ones to the right. I’m just wondering how that will look on the smaller devices and will there be a way for me to tweak the mobile version if I need to?

Other than that, it looks as though you tick all my boxes! Congratulations on a great theme.

Vicky

EskiLabs

Hi Vicky,

A. Yes, you can display content from your blog anywhere on your site using a custom shortcode. If you take a look at our shortcode reference guide section of our documentation and look at 9.4 ‘Blog’, that’s the shortcode you use.

This is how we’ve made the ‘Magazine Homepage’. You can see how we’ve built all of the example homepages and pages in the documentation, in the example templates section.

B. This is certainly possible but will require some additional CSS which you can insert via the theme options panel (Appearance > Theme Options). As long as you’re comfortable with CSS and media queries, you’ll be able to do this and make it look nice on all devices. If you’re not, you’d need to enlist the help of a developer to do this as it is custom.

I hope this helps answer your questions, if you do have any more, let me know. Thanks for your interest. =)

Due in part to recent concerns from small numbers of other ThemeForest members, I have a pre-purchase question. Could you provide the minimum server requirements for this theme? Specifically, the required and suggested PHP memory amounts.

EskiLabs

Hi NuMagination,

The only requirement is PHP 5.3 or above. However, we are releasing an update with backward compatibility this week. You can read more about the issue here: http://themeforest.net/item/metrolium-responsive-multipurpose-wp-theme/5018371/support

Thanks for your question, let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know. =)

Good day,

Good work Euged. I am planning to purchase this theme, could you please confirm that it does come with demo data xml?

=Jim

EskiLabs

Hi Jim,

The first release of Metrolium did not include this as we thought our examples in the documentation would be good enough but based on feedback we have prepared an XML file for our next update.

However, once you’ve purchased, you can register on our support forum and download it from there instead of waiting for the update. =)

I hope this helps and thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi. I really like the look of the Metrolium theme. So much functionality! I’m trying to decide on a new theme to purchase and I have a few questions before I do: 1. I know very little about coding and it sounds like I would have to build each one of my pages from shortcode. I really need to be able to set things up from an admin panel. How much coding really has to be done to set up the site? 2. Is it possible to have a portfolio item point to a subgallery or a page with a gallery of images (something like the wordpress simple gallery, not the slider gallery on your demo) or to a standard page with a captioned image and text? 3. Can I make the call to action box into a ‘subscribe’ box or put a subscribe box into the sidebar with a plugin? 4. Can I have social sharing links on each image, post and page? Is this functionality in the theme or would I need to install a plugin? 5. Can I insert a visible caption on or beneath each image? 6. Is there a way to remove the date from beneath portfolio items and make the title text smaller?

I know that’s a lot of questions and I’ll really appreciate your reply. Thanks very much. Danielle

EskiLabs

Hi Danielle,

1. You’ll have to touch no code to get your site up and running, shortcodes are snippets of code that you use in your wp-admin panel. So, the homepage examples and pages that we have on the online demo, you would literally just copy and paste the shortcodes from our example templates into the WP editor when creating a page and it would look just like ours.

Also, we have put together a complete shortcode reference guide in our documentation explaining their use, example usage and possible attributes, so it’s really easy. Again, you don’t need to write code or do anything outside of your admin panel (wp-admin).

2. The portfolio items will link to the portfolio item itself. What you put in there is entirely up to you. We have put sliders but that doesn’t mean you have to, you can use galleries as you mentioned or any other content for that matter, it really is your choice.

3. Yes, Metrolium is completely widgetized and the areas you’ve mentioned are already widget ready. However, please be aware that we don’t offer any support on third party plugins should they not play nicely with our theme. That said, providing the developer wrote the plugin properly, it should be fine, so 99% of plugins will work perfectly and as intended. If you were to have an issue though, you’d need to contact the plugin author for support, we only support the theme itself.

4. We haven’t created social sharing links as such because there’s so many different social sites that it would just be a huge widget so we’ve left that for plugins since there’s plenty out there that do a good job of that already. However, that’s not to say that we won’t ever add it, it has been considered.

5. Yes, captions are supported.

6. Yes, all font sizes can be adjusted in the WP customizer within the theme. However, there’s currently no way of hiding the date/project details box although this has been requested by another user and we agree that we’re forcing you to use that which isn’t always appropriate, so we are adding a new option for better control over that area.

I hope this leaves you more informed as to whether Metrolium is right for you. Thanks for your questions and interest. Good luck with whatever theme you choose. =)

Default-user

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. I really appreciate you taking the time to be so thorough. Can I just clarify a couple of things? Re. 2. I just want to check that the Wordpress Simple Gallery will function in your theme. Re 4. FaceBook and Twitter would be most useful to me to have if you are developing that widget. Re 6. I like having the option to have a title for a portfolio item, it’s just the date that I’d like to be able to remove.

Thanks again for you help. I’ll do a little more digging through the demo, but it’s looking great to me at this stage. Cheers Danielle

EskiLabs

Hi Danielle,

2. Yes, the simple gallery does work just fine, or you can append an extra attribute to that same built in gallery shortcode to turn it into a slider automagically, but that is of course completely optional.

4. Those two would definitely be up there if we do build in more social features.

6. You could in the meantime whilst waiting on the update that provides more control over the portfolio templates actually create a child theme override for the particular file in question. However, I expect we’ll have our update passed by ThemeForest before you’re even at that stage. =)

Hi again. I’ve found a couple of issues with the theme. Can you please tell me if you can fix them? 1. The theme demo loads very slowly on my laptop, iPad and iPhone. It is particularly slow on my phone. Is my site likely to have the same problem? 2. The demo will not work on my iPhone when I try to see any of the portfolio page options. It crashes the safari browser immediately. It’s OK for blog and home page, although still terribly slow. Thanks. Danielle

EskiLabs

Hi Danielle,

The speed issues you mention could be several factors; your internet speed, the distance between you and our server (London, UK), the load our server’s connection might have been under at the time because of the number of visitors (we have more than one site hosted on the server too), the list goes on and as such, it would be very difficult to tell you why it was slow for you.

As for it being slow on your site (server), again, the same factors could impact it but if your current site is fast for you now, our theme will also be fast on it. The code behind the theme is in no way slow, it’s very well written and optimised with load times taken into consideration.

I’m also not sure why you’re unable to get the demo working properly on your iPhone, I’ve just test on mine (iPhone 5, latest iOS) and it all works fine and safari doesn’t crash at all. I’d hazard a guess that it might be connected to connectivity issues or something with what you described earlier.

I’m sorry that I can’t shed much light on your questions, I realise that what I’ve wrote probably won’t be of much use to you but it’s the best answer I can offer I’m afraid. Rest assured though, if you did purchase and were still experiencing issues when it’s hosted on your site (server) that we would investigate and resolve these issues with you.

Default-user

Thanks for your reply. I’m using an iPhone 4, if that makes any difference. Having said that, I can now access the portfolio pages on my phone. The one problem with them is that the portfolio items appear quite big and clunky.

Is it possible to make a few changes to the way the portfolio category menu and portfolio items appear on iPhones?

Specifically, could you change the portfolio category menu into buttons rather than one long banner. And can the categories be centred when viewed on the phone. Currently they are left justified and don’t spread evenly across the screen.

The portfolio item images also butt up against the left side of the screen. Can they be centred with some white space around them or be organised more attractively. Here are some examples: http://themetrust.com/demos/hero/?page_id=71 http://pexetothemes.com/demos/expression_wp/mixed-gallery/ http://pexetothemes.com/demos/evermore_wp/mixed-items-gallery/

And one final thing I forgot to ask above. If I have someone make changes to the shortcode that builds the pages (to decrease spacing between sections etc.), how will that function with theme upgrades down the track?

Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions. It’s much appreciated. Danielle

Default-user

Oops. I just worked out the portfolio categories are buttons with a background. That’s sorted. Thanks.

EskiLabs

Hi Danielle,

I hadn’t actually noticed until now how ugly the portfolio filter (long bar) is on mobile, that’s definitely something that annoys even me and we use Metrolium ourselves on www.euged.com. That’s now on our list of things to improve!

As for portfolio items touching the left hand edge of your screen, could you please refresh a few times to try to clear cache as we did notice that issue and have since fixed it, so you’re probably seeing cache (hopefully).

As for increasing/decreasing paddings, some shortcodes support this as a parameter, others don’t but you can certainly customise things.

In terms of impact going forward; Metrolium has child theme support, meaning that you can use the child theme and do all of your modifications in there separate from the theme you purchase. WordPress checks for files/functions in the child theme first and falls back to the parent theme (Metrolium) if one doesn’t exist making overrides really easy and simple without making upgrades difficult as you never actually need to change the main theme.

That said, if we ever do update files in the parent theme and you have an override in place for certain files that have changed, you would need to update your files in your child theme accordingly but providing that you keep things well structured, you shouldn’t have any issues keeping on top of it.

I hope I’ve covered all questions, I think I have. =)

Default-user

Hi again,

The refresh worked. The portfolio looks good on my phone now. (except for the filter bar) Thanks.

Would you be able to give me instructions for creating the child theme after purchase? I’d like to make sure the theme is set up right.

Oh, I just saw in a question below that I can only have one portfolio! I assumed it was a page format that I could create more of. I think I can manage by using the Meet the Team page as well if I can change its name. For your next update it’d be great to be able to set up multiple portfolios.

I think this is my last question… Can I change the date for each portfolio item or is it fixed for the date the item is created? I need to put in a series of exhibitions that have been held in different years and would like to have the correct dates on them, not today’s date.

Thanks again for your thorough replies. Much appreciated. Cheers Danielle

EskiLabs

Hi Danielle,

If you need help after purchase, we’re available via the support forums and more than happy to provide you with direction on child theming, although it really is quite simple so you have nothing to worry about.

As for the portfolio, I’m sure you will have read in the previous comment that it is something we’re looking to change, adding the ability to have unlimited portfolios but as also said, we can’t put a time frame on it quite yet.

What we are doing is prioritising features that the majority of users are asking for. For example in the first week of Metrolium being released we’ve added a new header option, the sticky header as requested by another member and seemingly after that has been quite a popular asking. So we’re definitely taking on board member feedback and will continue to improve. =)

Portfolio item dates are the dates of the post which can be set in WordPress when creating/editing a post, and you can go as far back as you like, 1st Jan 1911 if you like for example so you can definitely use it how you’ve described.

Hope this helps.

Hi great theme just a few questions:

a) For each filterable category on the portfolio is it possible to link directly to it from another page? eg. /websites will go to the portfolio page and filter ‘websites’ automatically?

b) I would like to have a few separate portfolios, eg. type-a could include products 1, 2, 3, and type-b could include products 4, 5, 6. I want these to be separate pages on my site. Is this possible?

Many thanks,

EskiLabs

Hi ravravrav,

a) The filter is automatically generated on the portfolio page and the filters are categories that you tag your portfolio items with. You could if you wanted something more custom just build a portfolio page manually using shortcodes and markup, then you could have what you want in the filter and on the page too.

b) Currently it’s not possible to have more than 1 portfolio but this is something we’re going to be looking at although I can offer you no time frame for this at the moment.

Thanks for your questions, let me know if you have any more. =)

First of all, this is one hell of a awesome theme!! Good work!

I’m trying to improve the search capability of my site by adding the following plugin: Relevanssi

Now I understand that this is almost certainly not supported by default but I would love to be able to allow visitors to search my whole website (not just the posts). Having installed, configured and activated this plugin I do not appear to be seeing any search results.

From various searches on Google, it looks like this is down to something in the theme that is stopping the results from being displayed.
Relevanssi doesn’t work

If you the results don’t change after installing and activating Relevanssi, the most likely reason is that you have a call to query_posts() on your search results template. This confuses Relevanssi. Try removing the query_posts call and see what happens.

(I can successfully see that a search is being sent from the search form to the plugin via its search logs, but nothing is being returned.)

Would you be able to have a brief look and perhaps point me in the right direction with what I need to modify to allow this to work? I would be extremely grateful and I’d imagine this might be of interest to others too.

Regards, John

Hi,

I will like to know if i could place a search bar in Header… also i will like to know if the theme has a top menu ?

Where is place: Have you fallen in love yet? BUY THIS THEME! or hello@euged.com01234 567890 in the theme top.
EskiLabs

Hi juanmdt,

In the top “info bar” as we like to call it, the area is widgetized so you can put whatever you want in there so yes, you can put an extra menu there and/or search if you wish. Obviously it’s not tall enough for all purposes but a menu/search would be fine.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick message to let you all know that we’ve released version 1.1 of Metrolium. This update includes a new header style, the sticky header, backwards compatibility for PHP 5.2 so the theme now works with 5.2 and above which should be more than ample and 34 other changes. If you’d like to read more about what’s included in the update, you can do so here.

Thanks and enjoy. More updates to come soon, keep your suggestions coming on the support forum. =)

Hi,

I just installed this theme and most things are setting up nicely, but I’ve had a few issues. 1) I haven’t been able to figure out how to remove bread crumbs from pages. For eg. the about page has Home>about at the top of the page. 2)The shortcode for the provided in the index for the contact page doesn’t seem to work, the short code for other pages works well though.

Cheers.

Hi, I just registered on Euged, I’m assuming it won’t register here, so I can post this question at Euged if that’s more appropriate? The contact shortcode seems to be working perfectly now. I’m just wondering if you have shortcode for the sections on the metrolium demo home page http://www.euged.com/demo/metrolium/ like the “unlimited colour combinations” section and the “create unique layouts” section. I’m also wondering if you have shortcode for the “packed with features” section at http://www.euged.com/wordpress-themes/metrolium/

Hi, very nice theme ! Before buying it, I have a little question.

In the demo, under the Hello Bar, there is an Info bar with e-mail and phone, and social icons. I don’t want to put a clickable e-mail here (because of spams), instead I’d like to include a link to a contact page, and add a field to subscribe to a newsletter, is that possible without changing the code ?

EskiLabs

Hi ADGWS,

That area is actually widgetized so you could just as easily drag and drop a plain text/html widget in there and put whatever code you wanted to or if you have a plugin for your newsletter sign up and it provides a widget, you could just drag and drop that in as well.

The only thing you might have to do is adjust the styling a little bit depending on how your newsletter subscribe looks when you put it in but that’s quite straight forward and you can add custom CSS under ‘Appearance > Theme Options’ on the ‘Global’ tab.

Thanks for your question, let me know if you have any more. =)

ADGWS

Actually, I have one more. I was looking at the demo and there is no mention of Google Maps (or any map at all), I’d like to use a full width Google Map on top of my Contact Page (or at the end of my home page), is it possible to do that ? (maybe with a plugin ?)

EskiLabs

Hi ADGWS,

It is possible to do this with a plugin, it’s not currently added as a shortcode in the theme. However, we are planning to add this as we think you’re not the only one who would like this. We’ll make sure to add this in our next update but in the meantime, I can provide you with the code to put a map in if you register on our support forums after purchase. =)

ADGWS

I’m waiting for my client validation. But there’s a thing I’m not sure I can do : When I use the [band] shortcode on the homepage for example, I cannot have a sidebar, but can I still simulate a sidebar-like area with widgets by using the two-third and one-third, and display the last two blog posts on the “two-third column” and widgets on the “one-third” column ? (if not integrated, will it work with the “Widgets on page” plugin ? http://wordpress.org/plugins/widgets-on-pages/)

Because my client wants the last news on the home page, and I think it would be good to display older blog posts on a sidebar.

EskiLabs

Hi ADGWS,

You’re right that you can’t use a sidebar if you use the [band] shortcode within your page. It’s possible that the plugin you linked will do that but I obviously can’t offer any guarantee as it’s not made by us and I’ve certainly never used it and as such can’t comment but I’d imagine it would be fine.

There is however another way to show blog posts in any of your pages including pages using bands and that’s the [blog] shortcode where you can have it show recent posts etc. You can read more about the shortcode in our shortcode reference guide section of our documentation.

What you could do as a combination is a band with two columns, one with two-third, one with one-third. Inside the two-third place the [blog] shortcode and pass attributes to tell it that you want 3 posts over 3 columns ordered by most recent (asc) and you’d then have 3 most recent blog posts showing 3 columns inside a 2/3 column section of the page, leaving the right hand 1/3 to do something else with.

I hope this helps. =)

ADGWS

Actually I was talking about getting this (http://www.euged.com/demo/metrolium/blog/) in a page with the [band]

The structure of the page would be like this :

- Header - Slider - Band (with a picture and text) - Band (with two blog entries displayed like the link I gave) - Band (with newsletter field) - Footer

(talking about the footer, can we have only the last dark thin band instead of the big block ?)

Sorry If I’m asking a lot. I’m trying to find the best solution so I don’t have to alter the code and be able to update theme, plugins and Wordpress without risking losing everything (I used to alter code everytime I made a Wordpress website, but eventually there was a strong lack of security, resulting with spam attacks and hacking because I couldn’t update anything without destroying the site).

Thanks for the quick and complete replies ;) (and sorry If my english is not perfect lol)

EskiLabs

Your English is more than good enough. :)

The way that I’d suggest you go about this would be to create a child theme, I’m not sure if you’ve used child themes before but they’re a great way to customize a theme without the pitfalls that you mentioned above. A basic child theme is a folder that you place in /wp-content/themes and inside the child theme folder just a style.css which defines the theme name and its parent theme, very similar to the style.css found in a theme except one line that states a parent theme making WordPress treat it as a child.

Once you’ve declared it as a child theme, if you go to ‘Appearance > Themes’ you’ll notice two themes now instead of one, one being the child theme which will state that it requires a parent and the parent name.

Activate the child theme and it inherits all styles and functionality of the parent theme but you can override pages, styles and so on in the child theme without ever touching the parent theme you’ve purchased. This obviously means that you’re able to easily update without risk of losing any changes you’ve made as they’re self contained in their own folder, no more remembering what files you’ve changed and which to merge etc. :)

Our documentation briefly covers child theming and we also include a child theme with the download. WordPress also has an in depth article on child theming but quite frankly, it’s really straight forward, I’d be surprised if you had any trouble, particularly because you’ve mentioned that you’ve made themes in the past.

So, with the above said. I would suggest that you use a child theme and in your child theme create a front-page.php or template.php where the template is this custom page you’re thinking of building. Then, look at the code in our blog template etc, copy and paste various bits you need to reproduce the parts in the order that you need them. Make sense? :)

As for the footer, both trim and the block above are optional and can be set to ‘Hide’ in the WP Customizer options. You can test this on the demo too, click the cog on the left and go to ‘Footer’ and set to ‘Hide’.

Flexibility was really important to us when creating Metrolium so there’s a ton of options as you’ll see in the demo to make it really unique and your own. We don’t force you to use any section you don’t want to. :)
