Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a Tumblr theme?

Theme installation is very easy, but depending on which text editor you use, you might encounter issues.

For Windows users

Microsoft Word is not a plain text editor and will not work for this step. Open the HTML file with Notepad, which comes default on every Windows computer. Once the file is open, select and copy all of its contents.

For Mac users

If you try to open the text file inside of TextEdit as is, you will see that TextEdit is actually rendering out the file as it would look inside a web browser.

You want to set TextEdit to open your HTML file in plain text form.

If you go to TextEdit’s preferences by going to TextEdit > Preferences you will see all of the available options. There are two main tabs at the top, “New Document” and “Open and Save”. Click on “Open and Save” :

Next, under the Open and Save tab, under When Opening a File, check the box for “Display HTML files as HTML code instead of formatted text”.

Installing the Theme

Log into Tumblr and click on the Settings (gear icon) on the top. From your left, select the blog you want to install this theme on, then click on “Edit Theme” then “Edit HTML”. This will show you the code for your current theme. Delete EVERYTHING and paste your new code.

Click on “Update Preview”. You will most likely not see any change yet, but head back to Appearance and click “Save”. Refresh your browser window and if everything went well, your blog should be updated with the new theme by now.
