Never mind my last question about the slider. I found your instructions about inserting the target url into the image’s Caption field, and that did the trick :-)

I’m doing SEO on my site now and I have a question. I have a slide element and I put in an alt text description in the alt field page in wordpress but when I look at the source code from my browser it doesn’t appear to be picking up that alt code. Do you know why would that be happening?

e404
e404 Author

In slides the ‘alt’ attribute contains the slide title.

By the way: Google doesn’t see your slider images at all, so optimizing them for SEO doesn’t make sense.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

The alt finally started to show up in the source. The slides appear very clearly when I view the source. Why don’t you think Google sees them?

e404
e404 Author

Because they are displayed using JavaScript and Google doesn’t parse JavaScript scripts. And most of slider images are hidden in the page source.

bobbyl76

Are all the images served that way? Images using the [image] tag for instance?

That seems like a large loss in SEO quality to me. Is there some way to get java descriptions in there?

e404
e404 Author

Sliders are made for humans, not for search engines. What do you mean by ‘java descriptions’?

e404
e404 Author

Just to make it all clear: Google sees slider images, but it sees they are hidden. It’s hard to say how Google treats hidden HTML elements, because this technique is used by some people for manipulating website positions and Google knows that.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

As part of basic SEO functionality, all elements on a page should be both human friendly and search engine friendly. Sliders are usually images that contain valuable pieces of information about a companies products or services. Having a search engine be able to understand what any images is about on your site using alt, title etc is crucial for optimizing your site and gaining an authoritative ranking in googles algorithm. Micro formatting from schema.org has a bunch of tags to optimize code for non-text elements. There has to be a way to allow for proper tagging of slider images. This is a huge SEO oversight in my opinion.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

Are the images displayed using the [image] tag similarly invisible to google?

e404
e404 Author

Slider images are properly tagged. Are you sure that Google treats hidden images just like any other images? I am not. That’s why I won’t tell you “everything is fine, sliders are SEO-friendly” – I’m just not 100% sure they are and I don’t want to lie to you. There is nothing I can do about it – in fact no one can, because this is how all sliders work (in all themes and websites).

The [image] shortcode generates a standard ‘img’ HTML tag – it has nothing in common with sliders.

bobbyl76

a google search turned up a few SEO friendly sliders: http://www.themenova.com/features/the-exclusive-all-in-one-nova-slider/ http://www.sliderwall.com/ http://www.sutanaryan.com/freebies/modules/nv-slider/

is this simply a limitation of the currently slider technology within the natural theme?

Will you be integrating a more SEO friendly slider technology sometime in the future? It seems as if the html5 sliders don’t have this hidden to google limitation.

I really love Natural and want to make sure it’s the best it can possibly be.

Thanks again for your quick responses.

e404
e404 Author

Looking at these sliders, they all hide content (SliderWall hides the whole slider container, two remaining sliders hide images).

The Natural theme uses three different sliders – two of them hide images (Elastic Image Slider doesn’t). The theme just displays sliders – it doesn’t modify them at all, so it’s all about slider scripts, not the theme itself.

HTML5 doesn’t have anything to do with hiding images. It’s all about sliding technique. If I find a slider that has a positive impact on SEO, then I’ll definitely think about adding it to the theme.

Thanks for all suggestions and sharing your concerns. I understand SEO is very important – that’s why we made the theme code as SEO friendly as possible.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

Forgive my coding ignorance but how can you tell that they are being hidden? When I click on view source on my homepage I see the slider images quite clearly.

e404
e404 Author

For example, this is a source code of the Nova slider: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2600317/nova.png As you can see, 5 of 6 slider elements are hidden.

This is important, so I’m telling this once again: I don’t say that hidden images are bad for SEO – I am just not sure how Google treats hidden images. There are a lot of different opinion on this topic.

e404
e404 Author

I’m sorry, I was wrong – these images are hidden using JavaScript. So in the page source code they are visible. In fact, in our sliders images are hidden by JavaScript as well. I’m really sorry for a confusion.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

I see. Interesting. The hidden state is obviously only a temporary state as the images cycle through though. I wonder if any meta descriptors still get picked up by google regardless of the temporary display:none; assignment.

e404
e404 Author

Please read my last comment (I don’t know if you saw it). If the images are hidden by JavaScript, Google should see them with no problems.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

So if google can see them with no problems then that means the alt value is there for the sake of SEO?

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

that last post might have been confusing. What I meant to say was will i still get SEO credit given that you said they are not hidden in the source?

e404
e404 Author

The ‘alt’ value is not only good for SEO, but it’s also required by the HTML standard.

e404
e404 Author

If images are not hidden in the source (they don’t have ‘visibility: hidden’ or ‘display: none’ attributes), then yes, Google will see them and they can impact your SEO.

bobbyl76
bobbyl76 Purchased

Ok that sounds great. I was seriously confused because viewing the source showed the slider images in a simple li array complete with Alt tag. I’m trying to drive traffic to my site and was very disheartened when you said google didn’t see the slides. I’m glad it was cleared up. You guys kick @zz. Keep up the great work!

Hi,

I see that the sidebars all seem to be on the right side. Is there a simple way to modify this theme so that any sidebars (specifically sub-menus) would all be on the left side?

Thanks in advance.

For each page you can pick a template with left sidebar, right sidebar or no sidebar. The blog can have right or left sidebar (or no sidebar), but you can set it only for the whole blog, not for single posts.

Hi, i get this error from galleria: “Fatal error: Stage width or height is too small to show the gallery. Traced measures: width:430px, height: 45px” only on Safari for Mac and Safari for iPhone. This is my (opening) short code:

This is the site: http://www.residenzalapiana.it

Thank you!

e404

There is an incorrect height parameter provided for the Galleria script. Did you modify the Galleria shortcode?

Synaestesia

I made a little tweak, but now I’ve replaced the mod file shortcodes.php in the inc directory with the original version. The shortcode is: galleria_images thumbnails=”false” slideshow=”true” image_crop=”false” height=”50” width=”344”

e404
e404 Author

Now everything works fine on Safari, but the height of 50px is too small for iPhone (remember that gallery needs to be scalled down a little to fit a smaller screen). Besides, your gallery has the width of 570 px, not 344 px.

Synaestesia

Thank you!

You are using a wrong file. You should use the ‘natural.zip’ file, not the whole package downloaded from ThemeForest. You can find more details in the theme documentation. You can also read this article.

I’m wondering if there might be a code tweak to out the header menue above the header graphic rather than below it?

e404

It’s possible, but it requires few header customizations and they can’t be done as a part of our standard (free) theme support.

Actually I figured it out and it just required swapping the header and nav wrappers in the CSS. No biggie.

Hello, I’ve struggled getting my images to show in the homepage slider. I’ve tried shortcodes and the Wide Header Content slider and none are working. I am trying to add a text box with color – am struggling with getting the cursor to move on the color I want – how do i do that?

e404
e404 Author

I’m not sure I understand your question. What do you mean by moving cursor on the color you want?

Default-user

In trying to add a tex box with color themes in background, lettering, etc., the options take you down to the bottom where there is a square box with a patch of “color” clicking on it gets you the rust color but we are unable to access any other colors unless we go to your themeforest e404 natural page and click on the colors and copy their code numbers then paste in. Figured there had to be an easier way.

e404
e404 Author

I suppose you mean some problems with the color picker. I’ve checked your website (I still have login and password) and I can’t see any issues (I’ve checked theme options and the shortcode generator).

Default-user

When we go to short codes and text box – we should be able to pick a color but when you click on the box it brings up a box with variations of red and black – no matter how we move the cursor to a different color that is the only color we can get. Any suggestions?

e404
e404 Author

Could you please send me a screenshot?

Default-user

I had copied page with color box but it wouldn’t work. So – go to text box, then below in options there are a series of choices like background color, header text color. When you click on the box next to it a box with red and black pops up and next to the box a series of letters, a vertical color stripe a small color wheel.

Default-user

If you have an email – it does show up when I sent it via e-mail to myself.

I’ve logged in to your admin panel and checked the color picker once again. This is the screenshot taken from your admin panel: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2600317/color-picker.png As you can see, there are no issues. That’s why I have asked you for a screenshot – I would like to see how it looks on your end.

Good morning! Could you walk me through how i send a “screen shot?” I will send it as soon as I know how:0) I tried to copy the page, but the color square wouldn’t show. Thank you

Hello, Can you please tell me how to add a alt text caption in the “lightbox” pop-up (next to the gallery nav & slide numbers) when using this code…

Doesn’t that just add the text to the top of the image? I’m looking to have it placed down at the bottom by the image navigation. I noticed on the “Standard WP Gallery” page. The first image, the Cerianthus membranaceus, has a different title at the top than it does at the bottom. Is this possible with the scrollable gallery shortcode?

Hi there,

I am using the responsive sliders template on my homepage, and I would like to reduce the white space above and below my header image and above and below the text in my “intro text box.” The goal is to have the sliders “above the fold.” Also, is there a way to remove the white border around the slider images?

Thanks!

e404
e404 Author
To reduce the space above and below the header image add the following code to the Custom CSS box (Theme Options -> Styling Options):
#header { padding: 15px 0 20px; }
To reduce the space in the Intro Text Box add the following code to the Custom CSS box:
#intro { padding: 20px 0 10px; }
There is no way to remove the white border around the slider. In fact, this is not a border, but the content wrapper padding. If you want to have a full width slider you can use the wide header slider (example).

Fantastic, thanks!

Each slider has the ‘titles’ param – if you set it to ‘false’ captions will not be displayed. For example:

Hi, Awesome theme! Making my way through the site and making changes.

I cannot get the boxes to lineup on the page with the “Name, avatar, blurb inside the grey box”. I tried just hitting return and leaving space below the actual copy in the visual code section but it does not line up with the other grey box parallel to it when I update, not the boxes on the top or bottom are even with each other. See screencap jpeg link at bottom.

I would like to get these grey boxes to line up with each other so they are the SAME length OR they could all be the same size, one size (ie. as big as the first one), and then there would just be grey space under the boxes with less text but all boxes would be same size and line up with each other .

Or is it possible to make it so you can see the avatar and the first 5-7 lines of each blurb and then use an “accordion” for the reader to click on to read the full bio? That way all the boxes prior to the “accordion” being selected would be the same size and all lineup?

Any solutions you can suggest are most appreciated! Thanks a lot!!!

Please see screen cap below to illustrate my problem? http://i47.tinypic.com/103ipw8.jpg

If you want all boxes to have the same height you can add the following code to the Custom CSS box (Theme Options -> Styling Options):
.person-box { height: 300px; }
All other solutions are more complex and require some theme modifications.
