Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

When using the tabs widget, the tabs don’t show correctly like in the theme preview!

The solution is that you need to use anchor tags around the titles of the tabs just like so:

<a href="#">One</a>

The background is that you can also name those anchors like this
<a href="#first">One</a>
which enabled you to call a link that will open that particular tab directly
<a href="#first">Open First Tab</a>

I’m on a microsoft webserver (IIS7) and cannot get permalinks to work!

Thanks to Chris for this info!

My portfolio categories don’t appear!

Everything should work with a fresh unedited install.
Please make sure the following is set correctly:

Go to “appearance -> theme options -> portfolio” and give a name to one of the portfolio slugs, e.g. “our-portfolio” (please only use lowercase characters and no blank spaces)

Then under “pages” you need to add a page for the corresponding portfolio overview page. Select the “portfolio with sidebar” or “portfolio 3-column” template. Scroll down on this page and set the “If Portfolio Page, Use This Portfolio Slug” parameter to the slug you defined in the theme options above.

If everything is done correctly, the categories of the portfolio will be visible (refresh the admin page!)
