You must edit your .htaccess file and add this line to it:
ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html
where “notfound.html” will actually be your 404.html

If you images show up locally, but not on the server, you may want to check the paths to your images and the names, also the extensions, you might have misspelled a letter (uppercase/lowercase matters).
