And me again…if I’m not using one of the customized elements built for the theme (portfolio, authors, etc), is there shortcode or regular code that will copy that dotted border around the images?

dabaman

You can have that dotted border on any image if you add styled css class to it. When you insert an image to your post/page, click on it inside visual editor, chose ‘Edit Image’ and go to ‘Advanced Editing’. Inside ‘CSS class’ field, just add styled to the list.

I’m looking for a theme for my freelance writing website, and I really like this one.

Do you think the portfolio section would work for a writing portfolio? I need to be able to do two things:

1) Link to websites where my writing is 2) Upload and display PDFs (for print articles)

dabaman

Hi,

portfolio section is for images only, I’m afraid. You can upload the pdf files elsewhere in some other section. However, WP will display them as a link, and they’ll be opened in adobe reader in another tab. There are some WP plugins which allow you to embed pdf, but that embedded part will probably not be responsive as the rest of the site.

Thanks anyway. Very nice theme.

Thanks for the complete step-by-step documentation. It’s very much appreciated. However I found a problem: bulleted and numbered lists (

    and
    ) are not showing once the content is published. I’ve seen the CSS and found nothing strange. Any solutions for this? Thanks.
dabaman

Hi,

bullets on the lists are disabled by default – my original idea was that icons from Font Awesome should be used instead (check out ‘styles’ page for example), though I now realize that this is not ideal for everyone. Missing numbering from ordered list is just an overlook, I will fix this in the next update. Anyway, if you want to have automatic bullets and numbering in your list, just paste this code inside ‘Appearance>Theme Options>Custom CSS’:

.container ul { list-style-type:disc; }
.container ol { list-style-type:decimal;  }
.container ul, .container ol { list-style-position:inside;  }
.flexslider ul, ul.thumbs, #sidebar ul { list-style-type:none; }

Cheers.

Thanks, but the result of adding that custom css is: - unordered list: bullets are NOT shown and text is NOT indented. - ordered list: numbers are shown but text is NOT indented. If there is a way to solve this via Font Awesome, please tell us… but the real problem is not aesthetic, but functional: the main feature about HTML lists is TEXT INDENTATION. This problem makes the whole template unable to show bulleted paragraphs (not just single lines), which are very common in CVs, one of the main uses of your product.

dabaman

Can you send me you site address, so I can take a look to see what’s wrong. The code I gave you works great for me, the unordered lists show bullets, and both lists are indented (first line only, though) as it should. Did you perhaps meant that whole paragraphs should be indented (not only first line)? If so, try this css instead:

.container ul { list-style-type:disc; }
.container ol { list-style-type:decimal;  }
.container ul, .container ol { list-style-position:outside; margin-left:20px;  }
.flexslider ul, .flexslider ol, ul.thumbs, #sidebar ul, ul.pages { list-style-type:none; margin-left:0; }

What is the minimum size required in order for a photo to display properly in the Flexslider?

Thanks,

Mike

dabaman

Hi Mike,

it’s 672×282px.

Thanks for the quick response. Much appreciated.

I have installed this theme and while trying to add some customization I seem to have broken something. I tried deleting and reinstalling but that doesn’t seem to fix the issue. It just shows back up exactly as it was before I deleted and reinstalled. The issue that I am having is that the responsive navigation isn’t working anymore. here

dabaman

Hi, you only need to select your menu from a dropdown inside ‘Appearance>Menus’, and everything will be alright.

I adore this theme. There is so many possibilities with it! One question: how do you set the order of the slides in the flexislider?

dabaman

Hi,

just install Post Types Order plugin, it will allow you to simply reorder your slide posts.

gennifergene

works great! thanks!

Hi Dabaman,

I am trying to publish the Portfolio images with a height superior to 570px , because I have a lot material that is in vertical, when I resize to 570px height the details is missed because the image is so small. For this reason I prefer the pics load with the original height. In the colorBox settings appears a tool to fit the portfolio images automatically but doesn’t work. Could you help me?

dabaman

Hi,

if you are referring to jQuery Colorbox, this plugin is disabled inside portfolio, so it’s setting do not influence the portfolio in any way. That’s because the portfolio itself uses different, slideshow plugin for displaying pictures.

If you want, you can increase the preview area that appears once you click on the thumbnail, that will allow you to see full size image in greater details. Just email me here and I’ll explain how you can change the code for this. However, please keep in mind that this area will always have the same dimension, regardless if you load horizontal or vertical images. So, you just need to find the size that is appropriate for the majority of your pictures.

The link that you sent me show me an error, PAGE NO AVAILABLE. Also the contact form doesn’t work. The messages don’t arrive to my mailbox (and there are not emails in SPAM folder). Could you give me another contact please, thank so much.

dabaman

The link I gave was to my profile page, but I accidently put a quote at the end. Anyway, just click on my name, and you have a contact form at the bottom in the right corner.

What contact form is not working?

Default-user

Thanks for your quick response Dabaman, the contact form of this Pen and Paper template don’t sent the message to my email, I put the email correctly in WP dashboard, but doesn’t work :(

dabaman

I’ve just tested it on my demo site, and it’s working flawlessly. Are you sure that you set Contact Form 7 plugin correctly? You have a sample code inside documentation that you use when creating your form. It should work without a problem with default settings.

Default-user

I wanna mean, the ‘Contact Form’ of the template Pen and Paper. The messages don’t arrive into my mailbox, when I do a test. Could you help me with this, please? Thank you.

Hi. Love this theme, But is it possible to view the images in the portofolio a bit larger ? maby over the whole screen ?

dabaman

Hi,

you can’t have a full screen image, it needs to have fixed dimensions (currently 912×570px). You can, however, increase the maximum height of the image with some minor code alteration.

Cheers.

HI. I am both a graphic designer and web developer. If I were to add screenshots of my websites to the gallery is there a way to link it directly to the site? Can I have content below the image? Is this theme basically just for illustration portfolios? Thanks.

dabaman

Hi,

basically, the content that you can have beside the image itself – and I’m referring to large image only – is only a title and a description (which should be kept short so it’s not obscuring the image too much). You can move that title and description bellow the picture if you like, but you should read this first. You can of place an html link to any site inside the description (something like “Launch online version”). This theme is not just for illustration portfoios, you can use it for everything that seems suitable. :)

Great looking theme, i’m definitely interested to purchase it. If a thumbnail opens and you have the title and the description field inside the big picture, is it possible for example to put javascript inside this description field? (for example to create a working link that will open a Paypal payment?)

Also are there limitations to how much work is displayed under the “Our Best Work” section on the home page? If I would want, for example, to display 50 or so works there, would that be possible?

dabaman

I believe it should work without any problems, for test I’ve tried placing Twitter share button with his js and it’s displaying fine. You can have as much images as you like.

Is there a way to customize filters in portfolio? It automatically sorts a-z, but I want to customize this.

dabaman

Well, you can see some examples on Quicksand’s site that it can be sorted by size as well, but that will require code alteration.

Hello again. Your theme is really neat. Could you tell me, is there a way of narrowing the zone between each homepage section? [I don’t think mine is big because I need more content in there, but it could be I suppose…] ww. G00 gies ar Tcafe dot comm

dabaman

Hi, you can use this css (paste it inside ‘Appearance>Theme Options>Custom CSS’):

section.slide > .container,
section.page > .container { padding:150px 0; }

150px is amount of padding on top and bottom of each section, so you can decrease or increase that number to your need. Just don’t set it lower than 120px, because your portfolio controls will get hidden by the top navigation menu.

gennifergene

That worked a treat, thanks very much!

gennifergene

But oh dear, if I reduce the padding number all the way down to padding:10px, there is still 7-8cm between content at the bottom of one section and at the top of the next. Have I missed something, or is there another value that I can change?

gennifergene

aha, no, its something to do with the padding around a table?

gennifergene

aha, yes. It was the fault of my one_halfs. Please ignore these ramblings and accept my thanks for your patience!

dabaman

I’m glad you sorted things out. :)

gennifergene

Oh dear. The solution worked partially, but even with the ‘container’ fix there are still very large gaps between each section (see ww.go Ogies. co@ uk) I’ve spent the morning reading up and I can’t decide if it is something to do with the margins or perhaps something to do with the fact that I took away my menu. Could you please help me find a way to reduce the margins / gaps between the sections?

dabaman

Check your custom css code – you didn’t add ‘font-family’ line properly, which is causing rest of the code to be ignored.

gennifergene

My hero! Thank you!

Hi debaman, I’d like to align the navigation menu to the center of the page, how can I do that? custom css code? Thank you in advance,

dabaman

Hi,

since the header is divided into two parts – one smaller part for the logo, and the bigger part for the navigation – you can’t align navigation on the center of the page.

Hi dabaman,

The site I created using your Pen and Paper template has been live now for over a week. When I Google the url, the following comes up in the search results: “A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt”. I checked in the Wordpress dashboard under Settings>Readings and the “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is NOT checked. So, my question is, is there something within your theme that I must “check off” or change in order for the search engines to index the site?

Thanks, Mike

dabaman

Hi Mike,

there is nothing on the theme’s part that could block site idexing. First, make sure that you actually have ‘robots.txt’ on your server by checking ‘www.yoursite.com/robots.txt’. The content should be like this I think:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-includes/

If you don’t have that file, you may need to create it. Otherwise, I think that you just need to wait a little more before your site gets indexed.

Thanks, I will look into this.

Hi dabaman,

If I want to add the Webmaster Tools meta tag to the site, what template should I drop it into, and where?

Thanks, Mike

dabaman

You can edit ‘header.php’ template (accessible at ‘Appearance>Editor’), meta tags are near the top of a document.

Dear Dabaman,

Your theme is ace and I’ve been able to do so much with it, thanks so much.

I have a small problem – I (think) I have followed the instructions but I can’t seem to get wordpress to display the “Homepage Sections”. It worked fine on my other domain so obviously I have something simple wrong. Do you have any idea what it might be? The url is go ogies dot Coo dot UK

Thanks so much for your help. Been scratching my head for days.

dabaman

Hi,

did you set that page to be your front page inside ‘General>Reading’? Also, in order to display ‘homepage section’ on a given page, that page needs to have ‘Homepage’ template applied.

gennifergene

aha! that was it, I had forgotten the last bit, and i had two things pointing to the same page that shouldnt have been. Thanks for your help!

P.S. on the test site the ‘Homepage’ option appeared in the menu, but on the actual site, it doesn’t appear. Most puzzling.

I am fine with HTML and CSS, but I must be the world’s biggest Wordpress idiot, because I just cannot work out how to make this theme display the way that I want it to. I wish to emulate the example layout offered here in Theme Forest, with a heading, a slider, and other sections as you scroll down.

Where/how do I create this structure?!

dabaman

Hi Amber,

inside the package you downloaded, I’ve included a file called demo_content.xml, which you can import to get the same content as shown in my demo. I’ve described how to import this and set the theme inside the documentation (help) file, which is located inside ‘Documentation’ folder. It should guide you step by step, but if something still remains unclear, just let me know.

Cheers.

Default-user

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I missed the documentation purely because I expected it to be a text file, not a html file! Silly me.

I have another potentially stupid question to ask: can the portfolio items be configured to take users to a page when they click on them?

dabaman

I’m afraid not, but you can paste an html link to that page inside the description field.

Default-user

I’m sorry to be the most annoying purchaser ever but I just have ONE final question. My other design collateral (business cards, contracts etc.) uses Georgia as their font, and I’d much prefer to keep this consistent across everything. Is there a way to override the Google fonts that this theme utilises? I have edited the stylesheet, but the font options overrides this, of course.

Default-user

I lied. I have TWO questions. I want to insert content between the home section and the author section, but (presumably because I installed your demo content) it appears at the bottom. Is there any way to change the order of the sections? If you lived up the road, I would totally bake you a cake or something. I’m sorry about all the questions.

dabaman

Hi,

1) If you want to change, or in this case lets say add a font, you can do it if you edit file called ‘fonts.php’. You can access it inside ‘Appearance>Editor’ from the right side. If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see an array of fonts ($fonts = array( ... )) that this theme can use, so you could just add your Georgia to it:

        'georgia' => array(
            'name' => 'Georgia',
            'font' => '',
            'css' => "font-family: Georgia, serif;"
        ),

Just pay attention to the commas, otherwise you could break something. After that, you’ll see Georgia font inside the list under ‘Appearance>Font Options’.

2) Install ‘Post Types Order’ WP plugin, it will allow you to reorder not just homepage sections, but also authors and portfolio items.

Default-user

Thank you — you are a CHAMPION. Love this theme. Exactly what I had in mind.

Thank you for all your help.

Could you tell me, is there a simple way to stop the dots and arrows around the flexslider from appearing?

I’m definitely going to be buying something else from your portfolion next time. It is a great theme.
