Discussion on PowerMag: The Most Muscular Magazine/Reviews Theme

I love your theme, but why you didn’t make it more wide, like 1440px?

djwd
djwd Author

Hi romanzy and thank you for your interest in PowerMag.

Theme max width is 1140px, and it’s already above avarage actually, usually some people wants it narrower (980px) for some reason.

I prefer not to go wider than that for several reasons, mainly:

- Ability to use full screen category wallpapers and wallpaper advertising (both theme features).

- Readability, too wide content is hard to read in my opinion.

- Avarage screen resolutions

- Personal taste :)

Thx for your detailed reply!

Hi, given the buddy press interaction would you be able to make that link in with the reviews in anyway – what I mean is a member could read a review and tick I OWN THIS GAME, so their buddy press profile becomes a lot more relevant and has all the games they have (similar to xbox profile)

You can then find people who have similar likes in games as you.

I don’t know if theres a plugin available that may offer this but if not this would be a useful feature for having the buddy press integration.

Hi asparaguspr and thank you for your interest in PowerMag.

The BuddyPress update has just been released, I’m pretty sure there will be future improvements on that. What you are asking is an interesting feature, it’s really specific though and I don’t know if this could be useful to many other people, as it’s not specifically a ‘gaming’ theme. I’ll think about this, thanks for your feedback.

Hi thanks for the reply and I hope you could consider this

I think as this is a reviews theme there is a relevance to allowing people to link from their buddy press profile to the reviews. the ability to ‘show off’ and say they actually have the item being reviewed by showing these on their profile is a good community element; whether it is a video game website, a collectables website, a movie website or even a gadget technology website people would have a benefit to show they have the items on review as this endorses the review.

The benefit for the Website owner is also very useful; people who do not read all the reviews on the site but look at members profiles it is another way to find these reviews as well as allowing people who have the same interests to find each other.

If you think about it – say this was a music or movie review website I could find people with the same tastes in music and then there is a good reason to start discussions with the buddy press integration. They could even post their own score on thie profile and create a mini-review which feeds back to the already existing scores on the original review.

I dont think this is specific to gaming but I hope you can see how it would help create a community aspect to your review template, allowing people who engage with the review find like minded people.

Thank you for your very detailed feedback, I’ll put this in the ‘possible features list’ and will have a deeper look at it after updates that are already scheduled are released.

Thanks for the Update! :)

BTW, a little question: Is it possible to handle the Primary Color in the logo area separately with a different color?

Richterprodukt
I pasted the line
#full-top {background-color: #fff!important}
into the “Custom CSS”-Box in the Advanced tab. And the background-color in den header still has the “primary color” after that. :/
Richterprodukt

Argh. Sorry. I had to kill the “pre”-tags. Now it works. Thanks.

It’s a common issue, glad it was sorted!

hi, from the demo (just looking before I buy) on a review page the feature image seems clickable but does nothing – is that correct?

is it possible to have the feature image as part of a rotating gallery, so differnt screen shows cade slide/fade in

http://themeforest.wpengine.com/blog/new-xbox-a-left-floated-review/
djwd
djwd Author

1. Yeah that’s correct. From the next version clicking on the image will open the default theme lightbox targeting the full-size image.

2. No, you might want to use an external plugin for that.

djwd

just thought i’d share my method to achievin 98/100 page speed test…

I’ve enabled w3 cache and am using a CDN to deliver my files.

On the homepage i get a whopping 98/100

and article pages varies from 96/100-97/100

:) happy wordpressing!

djwd
djwd Author

That’s awesome! In the live demo I didn’t want to use any caching plugin like Total Cache, to emphasize the theme speed itself. So I could ‘only’ achieve a 96/100 rating. :)

Thanks for sharing!

hello here me again #Fatal error# here is fixed by deactivating all plugins. it can not support more than one plugin to my site but i need at least 10 plugins for my site. here is the prob “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 47185920 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 40961 bytes)” My site is hosted on vps 512 mb ram and there no other site hosted on my vps. and changing permission does not solve the problem let me know where is the exact problem..? thank you.

djwd
djwd Author

Hi there, who’s not supporting more than 10 plugins? Where you able to run the theme and access the admin/options on your wp install? It’s not that I want to shift the blame but I really think you should look at this with your hosting provider as I don’t think there is something I could do about that.

Hi djwd,

I think I found a bug. I just updated to version 1.2.

I am working with different sidebars that I created in the theme options. Since the update the sidebars are not delivered correctly. They are still displayed in the posts but the wrong ones.

Cheers, Norman

djwd
djwd Author

Hi there,

I can’t replicate the issue, sidebars are working as normal to me, the update didn’t really touch that part. :/ Are you sure you didn’t install any new plugin or something? Please be more specific about the problem if you can, thanks.

djwd

Hi,

I could fix that.

In the backend under > Design > Widgets there is a new sidebar buddypress. Below of that are my manually created sidebars. For some reasons the widgets from sidebar 1 moved completely to sidebar 2, the widgets from sidebar 2 moved completely to sidebar 3, and the widgets from sidebar 3 moved completely to inactive widgets.

Anyway…the prob was easy to solve by just reorganising the widgets in the sidebars.

But thanks that you took a look at it. I appreciate it.

Cheers, Norman

I’m sorry I didn’t expect that, glad it was sorted. Sorry for the trouble.

Which widget/plugin is used for the 2 sliders below the Breaking News ticker? Really nice. :)

djwd
djwd Author

Hi yash1229, thank you for your interest in PowerMag. :)

No widget or plugins, it’s just the dual slider feature which is part of the theme.

It there any temporary way to disable responsive mode? My website looks messed up when visited with a tab (samsung note 10.1) and not functioning well when using mobiles (iphone 4s, galaxy s4 and blackberry bold 9900)

Also, my website gets a googe pagespeed 75/100 :|

djwd

Thanks, the screen resizing it’s caused by the Facebook share button, and the gallery thing is a recently discovered bug. They’ll be both be fixed in the next update.

On a samsung note 10.1 it also looks a bit messed up. I dont have the tablet with me right now, but I will upload a screenshot asap if you need it.

I don’t have the chance to test it on that tablet either, I mainly tested it on an iPad. By the way if you want to send a screen I’ll surely have a look, I’d prefer you to send it privately though, thanks.

Hi, I enabled the greyscale option as it definately helps users to focus on the content they are currently looking at without being distracted by the colours of other moving items.

Would it be possible however to set a widget as being exempt from greyscale?

To explain – if all the homepage images were to be greyed out that would be very dull and boring, but if you had a slider on the homepage that you marked as not to be greyed then at least when someone visits the homepage theres a focal point of colour for the most important information.

Perhaps if you then mouse over another widget (that currently causes it to colour) the exempt widget then greyscales, but reverts back to colour when the current item is moused out and reverted to greyscale.

djwd
djwd Author

Sure it’s possible but it would require editing theme core files which I can’t really tell here. To have a quote on personal customizations you can contact me through my profile page.

djwd

Hi, the criteria for a rating is currently set as 6 items is it possible to have more?

Also as the bulk of the reviews will likely be the same criteria labels is there anyway to preset them as they always start blank.

Equally if you ever need to change them that would mean altering a lot of posts or some form of query against the database.

Perhaps a good solution for a future update is a theme option for managing the Criteria that allows you to set default values (to solve the first problem above,) and when creating a post you can either leave the default values in place which means future changes to the defaults would be changed globally (solves problem 2,) or customise the criteria just for this post by entering a local value which will break the inheritance.

I understand you may wish to have different criteria for different types of reviews on the same site – eg a food review compared to a games review however I imagine all reviews in a given category would conform to the same criteria so a more developed solution would be able to create default criteria at a category level so all children inherit that criteria.

Thanks

djwd
djwd Author

Same as above, it’s possible to have more but it would require some custom modifications. I will think about providing the possibility to set defaults from the theme options though, I like the idea, thanks for your feedback.

djwd

Can you help me how can I add more sliders to the homepage ! like you have in the demo template http://twicemg.com/junior/ - thanks

djwd
djwd Author

Hi there, you just need to enable the secondary sliders from the theme options in the Sliders tab, then feature some posts in it as described in the documentation.

djwd

Default-user

but i dont want to add a second slider … i want one slider and down the diferents categories in colours , for example

i want the primary slider shows only the news(novedades)

and down the slider or post / tablets, ps4 …. like the demo 2 ! I can´t find the opcion to put the rest of the post in the home page ! http://www.juniorgames.com.ar/web/wordpress/

djwd

If you want to set the home page like the second demo the main option to display latest posts on the homepage is in:

Basic Settings > Home Style > Classic Blog

How do i update to the new version , please let me know

djwd

Hi there, if you didn’t manually edit any of the theme files it would be enough to replace the theme folder, you won’t lose theme settings as they are stored in the database. Remember to empty all your caches after that.

Hi djwd. Great work as always with the latest update.

I was wondering if you could implement as part of the theme the floating social bar found here. Also check the “Sticky Navigation Menu Upon Scroll” feature, it is really nice.

Thanks again.

OK, i have purchased… Where do i add the XML demo file for content? No mention of how to do this in the help site; this should be made much clearer. Thanks.

djwd
djwd Author

Hi suprios and thank you for your purchase.

It’s not mentioned in the documentation as that is not strictly a theme feature but Wordpress itself. You can read more about this in the official Wordpress Codex. Here’s the steps though:

- Log into your site as an administrator.

- Make sure you activated your new theme before proceeding.

- Go to Tools > Import

- Choose “WordPress” from the list.

- Upload the demo content .xml using the form provided on that page.

- You will be asked to map the authors in this export file to users on the blog. For each author, you may choose to map to an existing user on the blog or to create a new user.

- You will then have the choice to import attachments, so click on the “Download and import file attachments” box.

- Please be patient while WordPress imports all the content. Posts, Pages, Projects, and Menus are imported.

- You will need assign the menu a theme location & you’ll need to configure widgets. This is a limitation of WordPress’ import system.

Hey DJWD,

First of, you’ve created a amazing looking and operating theme.

I would like to know that I am unable to use widgets when accessibility is off, it can be used on other themes which i tried but for some reason it wont on powermag and accessibility is really annoying.

also, do you have a Guide of somesort which can solve other problem because i am new to this theme :)

Does your BuddyPress support include bbPress? (in terms of CSS to match the rest of the theme)

If not, is bbPress support coming?

Hi sobodash and thank you for your interest in PowerMag.

Even tho bbPress should work fine, is not styled yet as BuddyPress is, I’m considering to do that haven’t decided yet though as it requires a decent amount of work. Basically it will depends on customers feedback.
