How does this theme compare to Salutations in terms of the loading time? Salutations is a bulky and bit sluggish. From what I’ve seen of this theme’s demo, it seems a little lighter and more brisk while browsing around. Is the observation accurate? Would there be some loading time improvement with this theme over Salutations?

Parallelus

I would never describe Salutation as “bulky” at all. It’s actually very streamlined when considering the code and advanced functionality fit into a single theme. If you are thinking that the total of PHP has anything to do with noticeable performance, it won’t. For comparison, look at the size of WP and how much code is there. Now compare that to our theme and it’s like a mountain next to a pebble. WP is still very fast, as are our themes.

We don’t have any caching on the Salutation demo because of the skin changer feature and BuddyPress areas. But I’ve never had to wait for a page to load on our demo, ever. Since the creation of Salutation, I’ve found a caching tool that allows me to exclude the BP areas and still get the skin changer to work for demo purposes. Razor has this enabled and maybe that’s the difference.

If I were to compare just the amount of code, Razor might have just a bit more, but I do not think either of these themes is lacking at all in speed or performance. We take a lot of pride in writing good efficient code.

Hi,

Awesome Theme really interested in Purchasing!!! couple of questions: - can i charge for subscriptions (paypal)? - can users have a profile gallery?

Thanks!

Parallelus

Yes, you can do these things with a number of plugins.

I know there are several paid membership plugins for BP, but the one I’ve heard the best feedback for is s2Member.

As for gallery features, I know of these two:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/ http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-gallery/

I have not used either and there are probably more if you do some keyword searches.

Parallelus

BuddyPress has a private messaging feature. It is enabled in the demo.

I own several of your other themes and love this theme! I see this is your first venture in to responsive theming – looks really good. Question though, I notice that when viewing on phone, the side bars disappear completely, compared to other themes that put the sidebar at the bottom… What do you suggest if you use your sidebar for important content… is there no way to optionally display sidebar content on mobile devices? What would be great is:

If you could “check box” per widget to display on mobile or not… that way you could choose not to show anything or selectively show important widgets (like a map, or contact info).

I see you can turn responsive on/off – how about if you could turn responsive off and on per page or post? There are many reasons this would come in handy…

and finally, and really a solution that no one else has ever done, is allow the user to change between mobile and desktop. There are alway users that want to see “the whole site” from their phone. I’ve only seen this done with plugins, but would be great to be built in to theme.

I would like to switch one of my magazine sites over to this, but I’ve always struggled with responsive themes and not being “perfect”. Thanks for another amazing product!

Parallelus

In the Layout Manager you can specify for each column the visibility for Desktop, Tablet and Phone views. This allows you to choose exactly what columns show/hide in each of those views. For the demo we have mostly hidden the sidebars in Phone views since they’re filler content for the demo.

We don’t have it “per widget” but you can certainly check a box per column in every layout to specify it’s visible setting in responsive layouts as specified above.

You could easily extend this to being a individual page/post setting for enable/disable responsive, however we don’t see that being a widely needed feature and will probably leave it to the individual to customize as they choose.

You can very easily add a link to your site that will let users switch to a default layout, disabling the responsive layout settings. We’ve prefixed all of our responsive styles with a class in the body tag, “isResponsive”. By inserting a link into your site with some simple jQuery to remove that class it will disable the responsive view. This would be an example:

<a href="JavaScript: jQuery('body').removeClass('isResponsive')">Switch to full site view</a>

You would probably want to add some logic to your site to store this in a cookie for the current viewer to ensure they keep the setting as they navigate to other pages, but that’s a very simple thing to do.

Would it be possible to add to the demo site site-wide bbpress forum? I would like to see how that looks and whether it is also responsive. From what I understand, groups-forum will be eventually phased out in favor of site-wide.

Parallelus

We will be adding one soon. I’m trying to get to this but right now it’s not a high priority. The bbPress forums currently have a lot of custom features integrated with the theme but the styling is not modified.

You can visit the BuddyPress or bbPress websites for details on their future plans.

I would also like to see how the bbPress forum styling looks. I love Salutation, but would like to try out Razor on a new site design coming down the chute that needs a forum, but not full Buddypress functionality.

Thanks!

Parallelus

We’ll add them as soon as we can. Right now they look about the same way as a default bbPress install, well that’s not true because the default BP and theme styling of Razor actually makes them look much nicer, but there isn’t any of the custom styling to match the BP group forums yet.

The forums of bbPress and BP Groups have very different code to produce the public display. Because they are so different it’s almost impossible to make them match without extensive editing of the template and I try and avoid that as much as possible. The styling is mostly going to be done through CSS because it make it much easier to upgrade and maintain your site. There will be some theme specific styling done to these areas, but it will not look identical to the group forums.

I have a pre-sale question. 1) If I purchase this theme, do I get photoshop source files with images of the people that rotate on the top 2) Do buyers have permission to use these images (and change text around them) on their own websites? In other words, are these copyright free images.

Thanks.

Parallelus

All of the Photoshop files used to create the theme are included. The images in the slide show with layers are not copyright free images. We purchased them from PhotoDune. For the images that require a license we remove them from the Photoshop files. For example, for the layer slider example we keep all of the layers exactly as they are with the original effects and simply fill the copyrighted image as a solid. This allow you to perfectly duplicate our result by getting your own images and applying the PSD layer effects without having to replicate them.

Your question did cause me to realize that I forgot something! In the last update to the theme I did not copy the new design files so the layer slide show PSD is actually missing right now. I’ve just updated our local files so that when we do the next update (probably in the next day or two) these new PSD files will be included. I’m really glad you asked that or I might not have noticed this for a while.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have couple more pre-sale questions:

1) When I play around the demo and go to forums: http://themeforest.net/item/razor-cutting-edge-wordpress-theme/full_screen_preview/3822067 – I see that links are not SEO optimized. I like to have Title of the Forum Post in the URL itself. Is this because you didn’t install any SEO widgets into the theme, or the theme doesn’t support it?

2) Is area below the menu (Social Media Enabled, Responsive Design, Trusted Expert Support) widgetized and can I easily change it or remove it via admin?

3) On your Salutation theme, I like Join-Share-Connect and Sign Up Now button below thee image. Is is possible to add such image and sign-up button to Razor theme without any programming through the admin?

Parallelus

1. Form post links? I’m guessing you mean the ones generated by BuddyPress in the forums area? The theme doesn’t have anything to do with these. It’s BuddyPress content generated by the plugin. I guess an SEO plugin might add those. If you have very specific SEO questions about BuddyPress I will not have the answers. You’ll have to go to the BuddyPress.org website to get that kind of detail.

2. The entire home page (and just about every other page) is 100% able to be customized. There are no forced content structures. You can change all of the content in any area to anything you want. If you want that section to be a full width “Call to Action” or a 2 column “FAQs list”, no problem. You could make that a couple paragraphs of text, a blog list, a portfolio, even a contact form. We build our themes differently to give YOU control over your content.

3. Yes. Just add the image and a button. Like I said, we don’t restrict your content to ‘pre-defined’ structures like a typical WP theme.

OK. I will buy this theme. Thank you for same day answers.

I’m just wondering how in the world do I increase the width of this theme? It’s very small by default and I need it to be at least 1000-ish for what I am doing. I thought I could simply modify the css like I do with BP and custom themes but when I looked at the code it was very different from the normal themes. Complex. Do I a. Modify the css and if so which? b. Modify a setting somewhere which I may have overlooked? c. Is this stuck at it’s width size?

Parallelus

It only requires really changing one CSS attribute. I’ve done it for Skin 10 (you can preview it on the demo) with just a few lines of CSS. I would suggest looking at the file “style-skin-10.css” and you might just be shocked at how simple it is.

Hello. Is there an easier way, with the Razor theme, to create portfolio pages than with your previous themes? Having to create a page or post for each portfolio item is too laborious. Thanks.

You can use the [gallery] shortcode to reference items in the media library directly.

Yes, that is the default behavior of WordPress.

Hi,

I purchased your theme and replaced some content to run a test. Your demo theme looks and works exactly as it should in iPad in both Vertical and Horizontal Positon of iPad. However, my theme, which you can see here: http://attentioninteractive.com/stone/http://attentioninteractive.com/stone/ – does not.

IPad layout is messed up: 1) logo comes out of theme and ends up on the top 2) Middle section is messed up 3) I can’t zoom in and zoom out

What am I doing wrong? I just replaced content on the theme I purchased. I read your support files – not mention of this.

Thanks!

Andy, I must say I’ve never purchased a better theme than this one! And I’ve purchased quite a few here. Yours is simply a pleasure to work with, albeit the ton of customization options can be daunting to go through, – but it IS 200% great to have them in place.

THANK YOU. GREAT JOB. Worth every dollar.

I’m the type always adding a gazzilion plugins. Your theme has not crashed yet! I’m amazed.

Q: With BP site should I add a caching plugin or not? Logic says ‘no’ but worried for load time?

Thanks Eileen

MoBizMa

Parallelus

Thank you! That is really great feedback to get and very appreciated.

With BP there is a debate over the use of caching plugins. Generally you can’t cache any BP page that is dynamic or it won’t show the real-time updates. There are ways to specify not to cache the BP specific URLs in many of these tools.

I would really like to give more detail on this in our Help Center if possible so it can become a resource for others with the same question. If you could, please start a new topic there and @mention me so I see it. I’ll give you the specifics of which plugins I’ve used for caching on the demo, why I chose them and what I think about the performance. Thanks!

Um yea I’m having a problem with this theme…. it’s too badass.

But seriously this is quite obviously an excellent piece of work. I would even go as far as declaring it the “u-design” of buddypress themes.

I’m seriously considering it for a massive project I’m about to begin.

Parallelus

Thanks… I think? ;)

lebrilla

Don’t act like that’s not a huge compliment. U-design is the best selling theme on themeforest of all time.

lebrilla

yea I’m not sure how much longer I can resist not having this, I get on the demo every single day

Parallelus

Cool!
